U can say what they want about these people but they have something most of u don't have.. They are happy.. Happiness can be found in the simplest things.. In their case.. Being elegant and take care of one's body is a priority... Also to those who say they are bum.. U don't understand.. In Congo... Sapologie is a a way of life that advocates a passion for clothing.. To allow people to feel positive about themselves regardless of their status in society.... Some of the guys here are educated intellectuals.. Others have unskilled jobs.. But what unifies them is their passion for a good time.. For looking good
Those who laugh at these people, think. What's the difference between them and people who bought fancy cars, the latest iPhone, state-of the art home computer? Or people who mortgage twenty years of their life to buy a fancy house they can't afford? Their fancy clothes are your fancy cars, your precious iPhone, your overpriced apartment. They buy those clothes for the same reasons you buy your fancy stuff: to impress other people. Maybe their standard of living is way below yours. Maybe they just cannot go further. Maybe those fancy clothes are the top limit of their achievements. Maybe they look stupid to some of you. However, they got there. They got to reaching beyond their real-life situation, and created their own world; a world where the dirt-poor people at least have something to show off. And it's their money that bought those clothes, not yours. Yes, I think some of them look stupid with the way they dress. But then again, that's because I was raised differently. From their point of view, maybe I'm the one who look ridiculously stupid.
I can't believe all of the negativity in the comments. What did these people ever do to you? This is a tradition that was started several generations ago by Congolese soldiers who brought back designer clothes from France while they were on duty. The tradition was passed down to where it is today with this. Try being born and living in the Congo, which is beautiful yes, but "uncivilized" for the most part. The Sapeur has a distinct role in Congolese society and that is of being a symbol of modernized luxury in a mostly uncivilized culture. I can see though how people would find it obnoxious. I would think that most of the Congolese people recognize the tradition, however, and that it gives them hope. Either way, I think it's pretty cool.

I think they look stunning! I wonder why they don't just have a fashion show for each category? it is good to see such pride in oneself in a part of the country that has very little. I love it.
Deborah Parker I think an education would serve them better. Becoming skilled in agriculture, carpentry, plumbing, and electricity would serve them and the community in a better way. Learning the latest in fresh water production and sanitation would serve a greater need. What good is it to look fabulous and not have a toilet? Priorities people!!!!
Deborah Parker We have the same problem in the United States - it is called external validation. People spend a lot of money on clothes to compensate for other shortages in their lives . Confident people neither dress or preen this way. What is interesting is that the people who think it is OK would not want to be seen in this ridiculous attire. Patronizing!!!!
