- The MIT Sounding concert MITSO MOVIES MACHOVER is the MIT Symphony Orchestra’s tribute to the art of film music, from classic Hollywood soundtracks to new works. This performance is the US premiere of Harry Manfredini’s Friday the 13th Suite, a revamped score for the famed horror film now celebrating its fortieth anniversary. The virtual concert on July 11, 2020 was originally scheduled to be performed in MIT Kresge Auditorium as part of the MIT Sounding series under the title MITSO MOVIES MACHOVER, on March 13, 2020, i.e, the date MIT closed its campus in response to the COVID-19 crisis. That decision having come only a few days earlier, and with the students rushing to pack their things and make travel arrangements, the members of the orchestra chose to use what would have been their final rehearsal to video record the program in the empty auditorium. The performance was shared in the MIT virtual concert series with the title MITSO: The Night Before in which Manfredini’s piece was broadcast, along with film music by John Williams and Angelo Badalamenti.
This concert produced by the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) brought together the music of film soundtracks with 2016 Composer of the Year and Muriel R. Cooper Professor of Music and Media Tod Machover’s A Toronto Symphony, which was broadcast during the virtual concert series on May 9.
Audiences were treated to John Williams’s “Devil’s Dance” from The Witches of Eastwick, Angelo Badalamenti’s brooding overture to Twin Peaks, the US premiere of Harry Manfredini’s Friday the 13th Suite, a revamped score for the famed horror film now celebrating its fortieth anniversary, and the world premiere of Three Pieces from the Saul Bass Project by Don Byron, a new work commissioned by MIT’s Center for Art, Science & Technology. “You’re writing for people who don’t know anything about music,” Manfredini says, who began writing for film while completing his doctorate in music composition and has since scored over 200 films. Today, film music is the primary way many people experience orchestral music, Ziporyn notes, calling it “a wellspring of creativity and inspiration” for composers.
MITSO MOVIES MACHOVER, in its broad and all-embracing approach, demonstrates that the sound of the symphony orchestra is alive and well. In exploring a variety of ways to pair sound with the moving image, the concert celebrates the music-from film soundtracks to the everyday sounds of a city-woven into our common experience.

Bravi Tutti!!! My deepest thanks to Evan, and the MIT orchestra for this wonderful performance and video. Thank you so much
Harry, do you have any video of any of the recording sessions of any of the films? If so you should post them or make new videos of conducting the Friday scores. You would get tons of views.
Harry, I've been a devoted fan of yours since the first Friday. Your scores are a HUGE part of what makes these films so enjoyable. Carpenter's music for Halloween is also legendary, but if I had to choose (luckily I don't), I'd choose your work hands down. Thanks for so many years of your art, and for helping to scare the hell out of me all these years. Cheers.
I dear someone would play this music like a prank like he’s coming for u Jason is it would be funny
The GOAT
Legend
Harry Manfredini would be so proud, especially with the cover of the Part 3 theme.
is he gone now?i knew him in 1971 his niece was my girlfriend karen manfredini
@@hopeful-eu1is no he’s still around.
Does he mention his brother or anyone
@@hopeful-eu1is I don’t know. Don’t know if he has any social media other than maybe Twitter.
Omg! How awesome it'd be to see this LIVE!
The part 3 theme is frigging KILLER!!! The only changes I would have made would be that dude playing the Rickenbacker bass guitar... give him some overdrive with the gain turned up, and his volume up some more
Outside of the original Halloween soundtrack, this is the Greatest and most terrifying music in horror movie history.
Faces of Death 1 and 2 opening themes and come back and tell me that again
@@zombiefulci3301 not sure if you have trouble reading. It's not possible to stutter when typing, so I didn't. I'm not quite sure what you didn't understand about my comment. So yeah, I saw both Faces of Deaths (and sequels) when I was a kid, right along with all the other horror movies and documentaries. So I'm saying it again: Having already seen FoD, John Carpenter and Alan Howarth along with Harry Manfredini created the best soundtracks in horror history. Were you able to process that this time?
Without Harry Manfredini's score , the movie wouldn't be as scary.
I agree fully. His score set the tone perfectly as well as hit in all the right areas for jump scares and kills. Totally added intensity to the movies
This is seriously the best thing I’ve ever heard. How close it sounds to the original tracks is so uncanny
True
Well, if the notes are written, then professional musicians should be able to perform without issue. It should sound exactly the same.
@@wadewilson8011 really? I didn’t know that wade. Thanks for teaching me something I didn’t know 🤣 I was just stating a comment about how it sounded the same. Not how does it happen lol. But hey if that makes you sleep better you’re good

You don't realize the work that goes into these great scores sometimes. So good.
While he was obviously inspired by Bernard Herrmann (like half of all the other composers alive during his time) this is some truly masterful orchestration. Brilliantly creative.
This is so amazing! Thank you SO MUCH to all of the musicians, vocalists, the conductor, the audio/video professionals, and production staff. A truly bone-chilling performance of a horror classic!
I would like to know this as well
Imagine part 8 soundtrack
This is BADASS! I ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE THIS. AND PART THREE NO LESS TOO THEY PLAYED!!!
I’m truly blown away in the attention to detail in every instrument. Even the choir as well!! I will watch and listen to this for as long as I live!
This is a great way to attract young people to orchestra concerts! Bravo!
Wow. Great job. Siskel and Ebert would cry.
This is amazing. That part III segment goes hard AF.
great to see this, so much respect! We just interviewed Harry Manfredini now live on our channel
The lack of clapping adds to the eeriness, because we’ve been conditioned to hear clapping after an outstanding performance, but the last notes fading into silence creates a feeling of loneliness, almost as if we are the lone survivor of the Voorhees rampage.
This. was. BADASS. Thank you for showing us this!
This suite was incredible! I especially loved the End Theme cover from the first film. It''s my favorite track from the entire series and this was a beautiful take on it. I like that you stayed true to the original but also added something interesting to the End Theme. It felt even more heavenly with the soaring choir accompanying the smooth orchestra. Well done!
I couldnt help but crack up when they broke into the 3D theme
This is incredible. I love this soundtrack.
Absolutely love this. What a wonderful and amazing performance . Thank you to everyone involved to make this happen .

3:00 Does anyone know why they left out the distinct Guitar Chord that goes here and other places? , PLANG , PLANG , PLANGGGGG
Very Nice! Sounds Amazing Live! On Stage! I'm a huge Bernard Herrmann Fan. But I've always loved Harry Manfredini's Score to my Favorite FRIDAY THE 13TH - 1980! THIS IS BAD-ASS!
Love this. So happy to have found. It would be amazing to watch a live performance of this as well as other classic horror music. Phenomenal!
A master of horror film soundtracks!
Hasta la música en las películas de terror de los 80"s fue algo cuidadosamente diseñado. Una joya, toda mi admiración porque es algo que sigo rememorando. 👏👏👏
Pura verdade

Frigging' amazing! I love it so much.
Now were talking, love it
It's time to play it again
That anticipation for the stinger.. works every time!!
I was craving the sounds of good classic horror, so of course I turned on a early Jason Film (Friday The 13), but then I said wait hopefully the soundtrack was here, THANK YOU, excellent 😁😁😁

It is always out of this world...That's why I listen.
Never thought of putting this music inside an orchestra.
Brilliant.
This is so cool
My favourite horror movie... Friday the 13th part 3
Yes! This is amazing! Thank you for doing this, and posting it online. Beautiful!!!
Bravo 👏
Where in the world did you get that sheet music? I want it for my orchestra to play!! Is it available for purchase?
I’ve been a horror fan for a long time..and the most critical part of a scary movie that makes it work is the music composition....Harry manfredini score is Jason’s theme to his story... very scary....very eerie & most recognizable & memorable.... BRAVO
Perfect!
Absolutely brilliant! I love the scores from these films and all of you really did Manfredini justice!
NICE!!!! That was really awesome!
So incredible.
Magnificent!!!!👍👍👍👍
Certainly, Mr. Harry Manfedini is a world-class conductor who thoroughly understands MUSIC THEORY and how to employ instruments in the POV of the subject to scare the crap of audiences and as well as CHARACTERIZING music in such a way that I cannot IMAGE inserting DISCO AS A THEME to a Friday 13th Franchise... The creepiness is tailored so well just John Williams space theme to Star Wars or Jaws.... In other words, Mr. Manfedini, TWO BIG THUMBS UP, SIR!! -- YES -- I enjoyed being scared as a TEENAGER sitting in a dark movie theatre and munching on popcorn with a sweet drink!!!
amazing!
The orchestra version of Fly away tiny sparrow at the end of the movie always reminds me of imagine by John Lennon musically.
The theme of the part 3 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 wowwww was awesome
This is excellent
Evan and the MIT yous lot are epic cool 😎👍♥️✊🏾🎉😂
French horns really make this entire thing for me damn
THiS iS iNCReDiBLe!!!
Wow that was amazing to see ! Fricken fantastic.
Brilliant
Good work on this!
5:31
Conductor was GETTING it hahahahah
this is what is missed in the newer fridays
If they played more music like this in the public schools students would become more interested in music. But what the fuck do I know?
The C.J. Graham Jason of part VI was the most iconic and the exemplar of all Jasons
Brilliant work....
This should be a friday the 13th tour!
I wonder how many of the orchestra have actually seen any of the Friday the 13ths?
This was amazing! Well done!
Harry Manfredini: HOUSE III THE FINAL BEST.
