Wow, I never thought this recording would be that popular. No, I do not speak German and this was recorded early in my operatic career when I had only sung two German roles. I had just a few months to learn several new songs in German for this recording, along with several Spanish titles as well. This was recorded for Reader's Digest, several titles in two languages, as was this title. We recorded in German and English with the Flemish Radio Orchestra. I am humbled that so many have enjoyed this recording. Thank you
Stunning performance, Phil.
As german I can tell you that you pronounced the words very well. You hear that german is not your native tongue but it's very good and much better than my accent in any foreign language :D.
This always makes me cry, I feel it opens my heart, even in German! I am mexican, s is my beloved husband I am using his computer...., blessings & happiness to all here.
Very nice! I really enjoyed that.
You have a great set of pipes, Philip.
Das war wunderschön. :)
Man wird diese Passage der 9. Symphonie noch in 1000 Jahren spielen
It makes me deeply sad to know I'll never create anything as beautiful as this in my life.
I bet you could learn to sing it and make a lovely performance of it.
No...u r wrong 100%. As long as ..u r alive, then all options n choices r open 2u, to try n walk firmly to it. Never say No, if u still alive n healthy n u can walk n talk. If u want success, chose ur goals, n find best available afforadable ways n paths that help u walk n move towards ur goals. Then make practical Time Plan, with milstones in ur way, to review your progress n learn from previous stage mistakes, n be ready to next stage. Be positive, never look back, never give up. Take n consider all success factors into account, in same time, pray to God for his help n mercy 2u, in ur learning journy. Remember, the 1000miles journy begins with just 1step.
Let's think up a little secret. I don't think the maker of this song could've known either just impactful his song could be.
Do something to leave a mark in the world. Even if it doesn't touch everyone's hearts, there may be just one out there who would feel touched by your legacy, and they'll be the ones to touch the hearts of many.

i think you just left your mark, friend.
Then just sing it, and give yourself joy.
Friedrich Schiller + Beethoven = Total genius
So beautiful this poem. So glad to find a version of the whole thing, and such a great rendition too.
It's not a poem
@@Chalice_Ng It was originally written as a poem by Friedrich Schiller and was later used by Beethoven as lyrics for his composition, although Beethoven changed some lines. And sure, we can debate whether an Ode can count as a poem... short answer: yes. It's literally a type of lyric poetry and the idea to accompany any kind of written art with music is basically ancient.
What a wonderful work of classic art; this music sends goose bumps over my soul & really chokes me up. God was sending us an angelic gift. 🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲
I have a mixture of multiple nationalities by ancestry. I have Scotch-irish, Welsh, Portuguese, Native American Cherokee, and Native American Choctaw, but I do have German by ancestry. It's not actually hard for me to Pronounce the words when I see them in the German Subtitles. And I cannot deny how beautiful the song Ode an die Freüde truly is.
Thanks to this, I was able to learn how to sing this beautiful song and won 1st prize at a talent show in college over Zoom last year!❤️❤️❤️

Still as stunning and inspiring as the day it was first written! It unite all humanity in the common experience of unity in someone and something so much bigger than ourselves.
Hermosa música, hermosos versos! Da alegría y paz interior.
Beautiful but as a german you notice, that the one singing this is not a native-german-speaker and does not know what he sings, because some accentuations sound very weird.
But in my opinion thats even more impressiv for someone who can not speak german to sing this.
Very interesting! (Off to find a native German male singer rendition...)
I believe the singer is from Finland.
So yes - maybe he doesn't
For someone who is not a native German speaker, however, it is impressively done.
Hm, I don't know if "e" really is pronounced as "i" so much or maybe I just don't know shit.
Alle Menschen "wierdien" Brüder ^^
I really appreciate the translation, I have always liked this symphony and now I understand something about it.
Ode An Die Freude
Hymne À La Joie
Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Joie, belle étincelle des dieux.
Tochter aus Elysium,
Fille de l'Elysée,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Nous entrons l'âme enivrée
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum.
O céleste, dans ton sanctuaire
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
Ton charme unit de nouveau
Was die Mode streng geteilt ;
Ce que la mode séparaient ;
Alle Menschen werden Bruder,
Tous les hommes deviennent frères,
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
La où plane ton aile si douce.
Wem der grosse Wurf gelungen,
Vous à qui échut l'heureux destin
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
D'être l'ami d'un ami
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Qui avez conquis une tendre compagne,
Mische seinen Jubel ein !
Mêlez votre jubilation !
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Oui, celui qui a seulement nommer sienne
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund !
Une seule âme sur la terre,... 😊
Love this recording , an honest rendition even if some people had a little trouble with the singer's pronunciation .Brought me joy!
The pronounciation is a Universal thing , not dialectal
Wow, ich kriege nicht genug davon. Kann es immer wieder hören. Es tut so gut!
Inebriante! Para mim é uma honra ter a oportunidade de escutar com máxima atenção essa peça musical orquestrada. Parabéns a todas que fazem parte da orquestra!
We had to learn this in music last last year and I loved it and today randomly rembered it and searched it up . Love this sing
Ansonsten war's perfekt :)

Wonderful performance ' beautiful voice............!!! Beethoven can sich freuen ueber seine wunderschoene, in deutsch gesungene Komposition, vorgetragen von einem Saenger mit einer wundervollen Stimme! Bravo.................!!! Bravissimo Phillip Webb. Thank you! Dankeschoen! Grazie!
And then centuries later.around 1999 AD.this song was put on a music video game called (DDR)Dance Dance Revolution at the arcade.on the songlist called "End of the century" aka "Ode of Joy" by Ludwig Beethoven.i heard this a long time ago before i played the game.it sounded familar.it is an epic piece, classical music and a classic!
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Always looked out for the lyrics to this song and it's meaning😇 thank you
Great singing, that last note is a corker. Excellent work
Beautiful, serene, joyous song, beloved Euphrosyne here is hoping your gifts spread across mankind once more in this dark time.
Strange how music brings the world together. Listening in Morocco 2022: well done, thanks
That,s beautiful song i ever hear for 15 yrs!
First time I heard this German lyric was in Gunslinger Girl. I practiced those two lines they sang over and over but then I found this video. Thank you!!
yea! I was trying to find this song from gunslinger girl yay!!
nice
Another Gunslinger Girl fan here! That was the best scene EVER.
MarioThaMonkay I am also a huge fan of the Gunslinger Girls...and I loved the scene where the girls were singing it during the meteor shower!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍
w00t! I've got the first 8 lines down, but my pronunciation probably isn't that good. I learned it from this vid and practice in my car, lol!
This piece is one of the hundreds of elements building our European identity. I really do not understand why Europeans from Great Britain prefer to abandon the Union rather than change it
Fearmongering politicians who want to get votes by taking advantage of anti immigrant sentiment and also by tapping into the inner insufferable arrogance of british people (who are THOSE FACELESS POLITICIANS IN BRUSSELS to tell us what to do)
Anyone with a brain knows the European Union is very anti european and bolshevik at heart! Wake up you simpleton! I'm an ethnic German why the hell should any union that has politicans not elected by the people have any power over any other nations??!!! The EU is a Frankenstein globalists nightmare.
I am English, British and European. The argument that I hear a lot from those who voted leave is that in the 1970 the UK voted to join the Common Market, a trading organisation. The argument is that it is now being turned into something close to a federal state replete with it's own army. It will not be changed because the majority of the countries receive more than they donate.....Turkey's do not vote for Christmas.....Good choice of music though.
To begin with, British people don’t have the same sort of ‘European’ identity as the continent. I think the closest analogy is how the Japanese don’t see themselves as ‘Orientals’ or ‘Asians’, just Japanese. Sure they have been influenced by the continent, their language borrows heavily from Chinese, but they have their own identity, and for the most part, the happenings of the continent don’t really concern the lives of the average working man.
European can hate the thing that EU became.
Sehr gut, a beautiful timeless classic.
Thank you for putting this one out here :D ! I have been searching for years^^ finally
Wunderschön, hab es schon sehr gerne in der Schule gesungen. Vielen Dank.🙋🏻♀️💖🌸🌿
I never knew until today that this piece had such lovely lyrics. :-D
the tune is really beautiful and this song sound is really cool!!!!!!
thanks ever so much!
so glad you enjoyed :-)
+mdragon1801] I almost faint to death
Realy beautiful voice and version of this song!
A number of people made negative comments on this Finnish person singing this beautiful song in German. Hundreds of thousands of performers worldwide sing professionally in English, often very well and with great effort. Their music tends not to receive much negative comments from native English speakers. This lack of negativity encourages other people to learn and sing in English.
A true musical masterpiece and an incredible video.
thank you ever so much! :-)
Fantastic, well worth learning at for this one. Thank you😊
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity,
Daughter from Elysium,
We enter, burning with fervour,
heavenly being, your sanctuary!
Your magic brings together
what custom has sternly divided.
All men shall become brothers,
wherever your gentle wings hover.
Whoever has been lucky enough
to become a friend to a friend,
Whoever has found a beloved wife,
let him join our songs of praise!
Yes, and anyone who can call one soul
his own on this earth!
Any who cannot, let them slink away
from this gathering in tears!
Every creature drinks in joy
at nature's breast;
Good and Evil alike
follow her trail of roses.
She gives us kisses and wine,
a true friend, even in death;
Even the worm was given desire,
and the cherub stands before God.
Gladly, just as His suns hurtle
through the glorious universe,
So you, brothers, should run your course,
joyfully, like a conquering hero.
Be embraced, you millions!
This kiss is for the whole world!
Brothers, above the canopy of stars
must dwell a loving father.
Do you bow down before Him, you millions?
Do you sense your Creator, O world?
Seek Him above the canopy of stars!
He must dwell beyond the stars.
Much better translation than the text in the video, thanks
Thank you very much for your translation.
Adding thanks for the translation. Much more understandable than others i have seen. Thank you! :D
If any are interested, this is the translation that can be found on Wikipedia entry for Beethoven's 9th symphony. The source is the programme for the 2013 BBC proms performance held at the Royal Albert Hall (Prom 38, 11 August 2013).
My God, my God, so powerful! Strange that tears are welling in my eyes, a hard man of the world as any other; as I hear and read these lines. Truly the poem is as great as the music; it distills the best in whosoever who hears.
linda música!
Gratidão, vitória da luz!
Beautiful song. I love Germany and Germans.
thank you so much! :-)
LECAPITAINEJACK *reminder it was made in austria
LECAPITAINEJACK but i gues germans and austrian have a history full of art and culture and also big wars
.
The text was written by Friedrich Schiller and Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the music. Both Germans. Beethoven lived partially in Vienna but was from Germany/Bonn.
But you know what; Schiller and Beethoven would not have liked these national arguments! "Alle Menschen werden Brüder wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt". This piece is about humanity and what we all have in common. Not national background, not races, nor artifical cultural borders needs to separate us. If we are able to open our heart.
Mendelson
It really make me feel joyful

Alle Menschen werden Bruder. Froh Weinachten!
This might be the Dutchest accent I've ever heard. Which is funny, seeing as he's not Dutch.
He is and isn't. He's Flemish, which is the Northbelgique (Northern Belgium) dialect of Dutch.
you should go back to whatever alabamian peoples do.
You need to hear the Texas' one. 😂🤣🤠
It sounds pretty german to me

Should we say happy 250th birthday to Ludwig Von Beethoven today? And thank you for the music.
Ludwig VON Beethoven... :)
We don't know the official birthday of Ludwig, but we're pretty sure it's December 23rd I think. I might be wrong. Correct me if i'm wrong.
