I had success with my flowering Hibiscus in Arizona by sprinkling every Sunday a small 8 ounce cup of manure. In the Summer heat I put very very little because we reach SUPER High Heat. I found that it really helped. I thought in nature animals are always pooping next to plants. so I gave it a try.
well good question. If you are trying to be self sustaining, growing rice in pots wont get you very far. you would def need to establish some in grounds areas to cultivate larger amounts. Realistically each one of these pots will produce enough for one meal, with veggies and a protein added.
I read somewhere that you can grow about 10lbs of rice in a 10’x10’ plot but I’d say you’d have to sow it fairly thick. It didn’t say how many plants per square ft which would have been more helpful honestly.
You left out some info: such as what varieties of rice work well in planters and of those which one is shown ? Should they be presoaked before sowing, and a test batch sprouted to ensure viability ? Also what are the do's and donts of rice you want to plant - obviously you want only unpolished rice, but what else ? Next: When do we harvest, how much yield does a planter provide ? How does harvesting work - drying, hulling, separation, etc.

Hi Brie, Where can I buy rice seeds at? And do they sell gluten free seeds 🤔 Thank you for sharing this video! Truly appreciate it! So glad I found you and I'm a new subscriber now! Yay 🎉
Hi! Good news is ALL rice is gluten free so you don’t need to search for a specific variety. As for sources- I’d check google. I’m not sure what seed suppliers have in stock these days.
@@BrieThePlantLady truly appreciate you taking your time to reply to me! ❤️ I had no idea all rice is gluten-free! That's definitely good news! Thank you 😊
We had ricefield before. It takes a lot of water to grow our rice, like 2 inch of water in the field for months until theyre mature. The soil is so watery that snails and leeches grow in it. And our parents pay kids to get the snails from the ricefield coz they munch on young rice plants.
Can you use a mixture of peat moss or coco coir and compost to help with moisture retention? I would think that would help but I’ve never grown rice before .
It’s always worth a try. Often the grains sold in grocery stores are too processed to germinate. But you never know! I’ve done tons of grocery store seed: rice, sesame, etc. usually it doesn’t germinate but it’s still fun to try.
yeah nah, don't keep rice over winter it takes too much water effort etc. it's kind of like sunflowers, maybe some types can last 2 years if you keep it warm give it water but usually it's not worth it
I just water as needed- the advantage of growing rice in pots with no holes is that you dont have to water very often, especially if you are getting a lot of rain, like we have lately.
I am growing a small patch of hulless oats here in Australia, am planning to plant kamut wheat and rice among others, i have been uploading videos to youtube i would love to hear what you think some time, i have only just planted the oats but they seem to be starting to come up
That is a good questions. I would say it is more about HOW you grow the rice vs the variety- but I may be wrong. I would grow it in containers- probably black pots with no holes toe ensure the soil gets warm enough for the rice to thrive. You may need to start it indoors since your growing season is shorter.
Hi, do you think that it's possible that we grow our own rice so that we could self-sustain our rice requirements for eating daily? I'd like to see a video of some sort of calculation, with assumption of rice consumption of a family of four, how many grams are eaten on a daily basis, how much square footage of land do we need to grow rice with enough amount that if the harvest season comes, we could harvest all our rice and re-seed it so that we have enough rice to last us until the next harvest season, and how much fertilizing stuff do we need during the growing season 😅 If you could make that video, I'll gladly watch it 😁😁😁 I hope my explanation make sense 😅
Realistically I don’t think it is possible for individuals to grow enough to sustain themselves. It’s also very difficult to dehull (without a machine).
@@Amcsae if prefers HEAT, so yes you can grow it in northern climates but only through the summer. I know of some folks who grow it in hot houses to really encourage seed set.

VERY SMALL- growing rice in containers is more of an experience rather than a way to get a sizable harvest. if I had to guess I would say a 10gl container may yield 1/2 cup of rice seed.
I'm gonna try now for the third time to grow rice. This time using your tips!! Thank you 😊🌿

Good luck!

Yes absolutely

What size pot do you recommend purchasing?
Larger is best-7gl is ideal

@Ramen Lover I'm not watering the oats, just letting nature take its course and see what happens. They seem to be doing great so far
never ever seen rice seed for sale anywhere I live. sad times. would love to grow some in my fish pond
You can find it online. I buy from Hancockseed.com
This is great. Would store bought long grain brown rice work?
no store bought wont germinate. You have to buy seed that hasnt been treated with heat.
ok thank you. I’ve read different things around the internet but it seemed unlikely to me that storebought would germ. Thanks for the confirmation 👍😁
what was the yield in weight for that pot of rice?
What variety of rice do you use to or where can I get the sea package
I have it listed on my website now BrieGrows.com

In a pot with no drainage holes the water will pool do you don’t have to water as much.

Can someone tell me what type of mulch to purchase at a box store to put on top of the rice seed.
I would recommend just layering soil on top. In My experiments last year the results were from that didn’t get mulched- just too dress with compost.

(i know you said to plant the seeds in summer, but if its 30 degrees Celsius outside here and will not get under 20 any soon is it still ok?
Rice grows best in temperatures above 45F (7C) and thrives in the heat. So if you are in a tropical climate it can be cultivated year round.
