Justice for songwriters!!! They don’t get paid upfront like producers do and A lot of the time they do not even know if their song is gonna be on the album until the public knows. Esther Dean said that it takes up to a year for writers get any revenue from the songs they’ve penned. The dream. Raye, a UK singer songwriter, has actually spoken up about this fairly recently. A screenshot showed she asked for an upfront fee and royalty points on the song (and by the wording it seems as if the song recipient previously denied the ask, but this was not in the screenshot). Wholeheartedly agree songwriters deserve more justice and it gained a bit of traction with KAMILLE (singer-songwriter who wrote a lot of Little Mix songs, they called her an honorary member haha) and MNEK (singer-songwriter-producer who has worked on sooo much for like 10 years with big dance hits to his name as an artist as well as production with Zara Larsson and The Saturdays) backing Raye. Fingers crossed some actual justice for songwriters can be achieved!!!

Get On Your Knees by Nicki Minaj feat. Ariana Grande from The Pinkprint was written by Katy Perry and was intended to be on Prism but it was later scrapped from the final tracklist. This is why Nicki shouted out Katy during the second verse "Got me seein' them fireworks, I'm on my Katy Perry".

My favorite trivia in pop songwriting: before Beyonce made it her staple ballad during live performances, Resentment was originally recorded by Victoria Beckham! Her album was ultimately shelved, and her recording career ended soon after that, but the demo version is still on RUclips.

The one by yuhMashups is defiantly the better mashup version that ive heard than the others, its really good. Though i wish it had just a tad bit more of B's choruses.
This was great. I had no idea Chandelier was meant for Rihanna. She would’ve bodied it! Also, I like the Wake Up/Pharrell evolution. T Pain and Beyoncé’s versions would’ve been great. I def feel it would’ve been good on 4 too. Ariana did what needed to be done and it fit her style the best. It’s crazy it took 8 yrs to find the best fit. Pharrell is a genius.
Nah, I don’t agree with Rihanna would’ve “bodied chandelier”. No offenses but Rihanna is a descent singer compared to sia! Chandelier is one of the most changing songs vocally even for sia at times so it wouldn’t fit Rihanna.
Truly I don’t think Rihanna could’ve sang chandelier as well as Sia. It would’ve been good enough but probably pretty hit or miss live. And yes I love that sometimes it takes a minute for a song to find the right artist, bc REM def was good for ari
Rihanna's version of Same Old Love would have been a massive hit. Her inflections, her ad lib, her attitude. As a Rihanna fan, it hurts to think of all the brilliant Rihanna songs recorded but never released. But then again, all her music that was released more than makes up for the lost gems.
I think a good companion video to this would be songs that were rejected by artists (or a label on behalf of an artist) versus the final product. When I think of this idea, Rihanna also comes to mind as well as Leona Lewis. Because while there were a lot of songs written for Rihanna that didn't go to her, there's also a lot of songs that she (or her label) rejected, such as Come & Get It, Lean On, Don't Let Me Down, Timber, DJ Got US Fallin in Love (though this song was intended for her and it didn't make it to Loud), and etc. The same thing goes for Leona Lewis! While many of us only know her for Bleeding Love, there were many songs that she and/or her label rejected that I think would've propelled her career into true stardom such as Burn (the final version had Ellie Goulding as the artist, but Leona's demo is still online), We Found Love (her demo is also online), All of Me (originally meant to be a duet between John Legend and Lewis with the demo still online), Impossible, What Does Kill You (Stronger), I Was Here, Halo, etc. (Nicole Scherzinger also comes to mind with rejected hits such as Just Dance, We Found Love, On the Floor, Crazy , and etc.) This subject is really fascinating :)
A song that popped into my mind from the title alone is His Mistakes by Usher, a B-side from his album Here I Stand. The first time I heard it I was so confused because it did not sound like an Usher record, it sounded like Ne-Yo to me. Everything fell into place when I found out Ne-Yo wrote it. Not Your Mama by JLo is similar in that it sounds like a Meghan Trainor record. Though arguably that's due to Trainor singing backing vocals on the track as well as writing it.
I just recently found out Meghan Trainor writes a lot of songs for other artists. Same with Jordan Sparks. It’s always interesting finding out that some singers are actually well known songwriters too
The songs I think of are 'Breakaway' by Kelly Clarkson and 'Hero' by Mariah Carey. Breakaway was written by Avril Lavigne and meant for Let Go but wasn't selected. Hero was supposed to be given to Gloria Estefan for a soundtrack but was convinced to keep it.
I love Gaga sooooooooooooo much. Bangers was an amazing album , I’m not gonna lie, I know her antics kinda overshadowed but that album I’ve listened straight through millions of times and I wasn’t the biggest fan of her music even tho I grew up on her . She made me a fan with that. Sis is a incredible writer. I love your appreciation for the art , when you describe the parts you think would have worked with another artist I can actually picture them and hear them in my head
I also think about Run Devil Run it was recorded first by Kesha and it sounds good, but I am happy it ended with SNSD they make the song unique and their own. I couldn't imagine anyone else with that song. Another song is Red Light by f(x) it was supposed to go to Rihanna, but she said it to unique for her.
"Pretty Hurts" was a really really good song, and Beyoncé most definitely did that song justice! I can't imagine ANYONE ELSE singing it. I certainly love the message behind the song, and she sang that song with her heart and soul. That song was meant for Beyonce no matter how she acquired it, and no matter who else turned it down. It went to the right person, which is Queen Beyoncé! God Don't Make mistakes that's for sure! It was her destiny! (Get it?)
Thanks for this video! You inspired me to look up the demos for these songs, and I hadn’t heard most of them before. Charli’s version of Issues is beautiful.
I really loved this video! While I like video essays and think pieces, I also enjoy videos that have more of a chat format, and this one really nails that vibe! I think a good topic for a “chat” like video could be famous artists that are also prolific/proficient songwriters, but who aren’t known for it/are underrated for their songwriting, like Mariah Carey.
charli actually recorded another demo for same old love with completely different production that like nobody knows about, and tbh it works so much better with the lyrics

Oooo also Britney recorded a demo of "Cry" which was released on the reloaded edition of Rihanna's 2008 "Good Girl Gone Bad" album. A low quality snippet of Britney's demo exists somewhere on the internet. The song was written by Frankie Storm who worked with Britney on her "Circus" album.
Some other fun music facts that I know are that: Selena Gomez recorded a demo of "i'm so tired" by Lauv & Troye Sivan for inclusion on "Rare" but, it was scrapped for unknown reasons. Jordin Sparks recorded a demo of "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato and her background vocals can be heard in the final version with Demi. Jordin also recorded a demo of "Who Says" by Selena Gomez and she wrote and demoed "The Way" by Ariana Grande but, Jordin never finished recording the song. Somehow Ariana heard it, asked if she could use it, got Mac Miller to feature on it and released it as her debut single. Idk if she wrote it but, Jordin also happened to record a demo for "Better Left Unsaid", it was originally titled "Tipsy".
Rihanna really has such an interesting tone and it’s very enjoyable to listen to. She can sing any genre and really sound so unique. There’s just something about her voice that draws the listener in.
I don't know if this is a topic to discuss but I wanna know why people drag RNB and RAP artists who don't write their songs but let these Pop artists do whatever. People drag Beyonce and J-lo for not writing because most songs they sing are RNB and hip-hop influences. I mean what are the standards between these genres?
Well for Rap music, your talent is showing your poetry. Rap is about what you say, and if someone else wrote it then you're pretty much just talking. The lyrics come first. Now with RnB, I don't get the uproar with that. Singers are supposed to sing. That's the talent, lyrics come second.
Kinda weird to think that toxic could have been on Body Language, cuz, the album was so heavy hip-hop and R&B based that a mainly pop song kinda doesn't fit, but, I do definitely see Kylie singing the the high notes in the song, it's very much her voice tone.
For the _"Slave for You"_ , that's one of the reason why Janet turned down this song , it's a nice song but Janet knew that it's inappropriate accept this song 💀
@@wildnfearless9840 maybe, that’s probably it, but I think she passed on releasing the song cause she felt like it wouldn't have been right for her since the song meant a lot to Julia.

Britney still got to have the song Quicksand written by Gaga. Released as a bonus to Circus if I'm not mistaken. And you can hear Gaga giving second voice. And they sound good together.
1:54 on "..Baby One More Time", Max Martin (writer) is from Sweden, and English is his second language. He thought the phrase "hit me baby" was slang for "call me baby" (kind of like "hit me up"), and because of the misunderstanding we got Britney Spears' career. :)

I really don't understand the hype with Rihanna. I don't find her voice to be unique as people say, she has quite a nasally voice. It's made me hate the song umbrella, because the eh eh eh part is like Fran Fine saying it. I truly think she had a huge machine behind her that made it their goal to get her number 1 songs that would be marketed like crazy, so songwriters naturally knowing this wanted to write for her because the single would sell well due to all the promo and marketing. I think almost all her songs could have been sung better by another artist. Diamonds is literally sung like how Sia sings it and Sia could have just released it herself. All the songs written by Ester Dean sound like Ester Dean singing them, she should have just released the songs themselves. I've heard the demos of songs that she has released and she literally is singing the songs exactly like the demo singer and the demo singers background vocals are heard in the parts she can't sing, so really the demo singers should have just released the songs. But record labels want to give it to bigger artists so they give it to Rihanna.
I could def hear Janet singing slave for you but the neptunes should have really thought hard about asking a black Woman to sing the lyrics I’m a slave 4 you like are y’all fr I have to laugh because literally what the hell was they thinking

@@naomi.cannibal I agree!
(Nicole Scherzinger also comes to mind with rejected hits such as Just Dance, We Found Love, On the Floor, Crazy , and etc.)
This subject is really fascinating :)
This is such a good idea!!
I'm 99% sure that Leona's demo to "We Found Love" has not leaked.
It’s always interesting finding out that some singers are actually well known songwriters too
“We found love - Rihanna” and “on the floor - Jennifer Lopez” were originally pitched to Nicole Scherzinger but she turned them down!!!
Breakaway definitely does have some I'm With You vibes now that you mention it
I love Gaga sooooooooooooo much.
Thank you!!! And yea bangers was SO slept on. I understand why, but it was such a great pop album

Someone just commented that and I had noooo idea. Glad it went to SNSD tho bc that’s a classic
Isn’t it?? I really wish it had gotten an official release
Yesss someone else suggested that topic and I love that idea
@@naomi.cannibal you should do it
I agree with everything! I wished Janet did record a demo of slave for you. I'd love to hear how she would have did the song.
I think it wouldve sounded good but wouldn’t have been iconic of that makes sense
@@naomi.cannibal yes it makes all the sense!
Beyonce's I Miss You was written by Frank Ocean. I still go back to watch him sing it live. So so good.
charli actually recorded another demo for same old love with completely different production that like nobody knows about, and tbh it works so much better with the lyrics
I love your videos. ❤ Thank you!
Actually someone made a fanmade studio version of telephone for Britney spears where they removed the autotune and the static audio

I’m glad you liked it 💕
You fighting back trying to say Riri should've had Same Old Love only for you to cave🤣🤣🔥🔥
I caaaaved, I had to be true to myself 😭
When I Grow Up by the Pussycat Dolls was originally meant for Britney Spears
brit brat would've ATE
Yess also the other hits such as Goodies, S&M, Milkshake
Britney would’ve ATE that. A sister song to Work Bitch if you will
@@kait7404 well it’s a song about wanting to be famous as a kid and getting it. but the original demos lyrics were changed
Crazy cuz I can hear TLC singing “Baby One More Time” well more of the chorus & bridge how you said. But “ Baby One More Time” is a bop!
Toxic is 🔥🔥 too one of my favs. It’s Toxix, Baby One More Time & Gimme More 🔥🔥🔥
Yes some parts are very TLC sounding but I’m glad Britney kept it
Oooo also Britney recorded a demo of "Cry" which was released on the reloaded edition of Rihanna's 2008 "Good Girl Gone Bad" album. A low quality snippet of Britney's demo exists somewhere on the internet. The song was written by Frankie Storm who worked with Britney on her "Circus" album.
Okay!!! I can tell you are a 2000s baby!
1998!!
In some alternate universe, Britney released Telephone with Madonna. I just think it would've WORKKKKKED

Second one here! Your videos are amazing, keep going and God bless you and your family! 💕
Thank you. And same to you and yours ♥️
Goodies by Ciara almost went to Britney Spears smh. So glad it didn’t !!
Me too!
@@jalapeno1119 that actually makes a lot of sense!

Rihanna really has such an interesting tone and it’s very enjoyable to listen to. She can sing any genre and really sound so unique. There’s just something about her voice that draws the listener in.
Not every genre she is mid nothing special
beyonces wake up bridge is amazing tho 😩😩
Been watching a lot of your videos lately, great to find out you're an Angel lol
Yesssss 👼🏾👼🏾👼🏾
Great video... would love it to be a series
I need a playlist with all of these songs now haha
I don't know if this is a topic to discuss but I wanna know why people drag RNB and RAP artists who don't write their songs but let these Pop artists do whatever. People drag Beyonce and J-lo for not writing because most songs they sing are RNB and hip-hop influences. I mean what are the standards between these genres?
It’s always been odd to me that we expect songwriters to write their music to consider them “good”. We don’t expect actors to write their own scripts
Yes please 🙏🏿 this would be a great analysis.
Well for Rap music, your talent is showing your poetry. Rap is about what you say, and if someone else wrote it then you're pretty much just talking. The lyrics come first. Now with RnB, I don't get the uproar with that. Singers are supposed to sing. That's the talent, lyrics come second.
I feel like rap is self explanatory and other genres I don’t mind or it shouldn’t matter lol
mmm j-lo? Ithought she was getting dragged for other reasons.
great video, you could do more videos like this ! i love that you are a charli fan too
I should!! I actually met her when I was like 16 after one of her concerts, she’s so cool
Would have been nice to include the snippets of the alternates! Otherwise- liked hearing your thoughts!
Kinda weird to think that toxic could have been on Body Language, cuz, the album was so heavy hip-hop and R&B based that a mainly pop song kinda doesn't fit, but, I do definitely see Kylie singing the the high notes in the song, it's very much her voice tone.
yeah I for sure always envisioned "umbrella" as a love song.
For the _"Slave for You"_ , that's one of the reason why Janet turned down this song , it's a nice song but Janet knew that it's inappropriate accept this song 💀
Selena Gomez also recorded a demo of "Issues" sometime in late 2016 but, for some unknown reason it was later scrapped.
Ooh, maybe because of her health struggles
@@wildnfearless9840 maybe, that’s probably it, but I think she passed on releasing the song cause she felt like it wouldn't have been right for her since the song meant a lot to Julia.
Girl I was obsessed with the Bangerz album!!!! Only 2 songs I didn't like were those 2 heavily country songs. But yeah riri woulda killed it, it woulda fit that cheers to the frickin weekend vibes
Completely agree, I skip those 2 but love the rest of the album 😭
Great video! :)
Love the content 👏🏾❤️
Thank you 🫶🏾
If I may suggest a part 2… I kinda wanna hear what you think about God is a Woman 😅
@@quentinbrocktv7267 oh definitely should’ve stayed with Ari. I do like Camilas demo tho and completely can see her singing the song but I love it more for ari
we need part 2
@@jalapeno1119 That’s one thing but it’s the fact that she can’t sing well either is the problem
I could def hear Janet singing slave for you but the neptunes should have really thought hard about asking a black Woman to sing the lyrics I’m a slave 4 you like are y’all fr I have to laugh because literally what the hell was they thinking
No fr I’m like… did you really think that was gonna fly 😭
Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head was first offered to S Club 7, just found that out recently.
You left thinking about forever frank ocean was meant for Bridget Kelly
In my opinion T-Pain has NEVER EVER made a song that wasn't a hit EVER!! Well at least not that I can think of off the top of my head! From the moment he came into the game he was killing it! It didn't matter who he collaborated with, or if he was by himself on the song. It was always a fuk'n hit.
