This is a profound piece and all the more so in this profound version. The sheer oppressiveness of Australia is so discerningly voiced in this piece and this recording. It calls to be heard and understood, like a warning beacon for our time. It's my privilege to hear it.

What a beautiful piece of music, it stirs up emotions that I can’t put into words. Dread mixed with serenity

I love this music. It has a dreaminess to it that seems so Australian.

Heard it on Radio BBC 3, so beautiful. Check out Joep Franssen's Phasing for choir and Orchestra, Hoddinott's 3rd Symphony, if you haven't already, Groetjes

Thanks very much for going to the effort of syncronizing appropriate pictures to the music, it makes me fascinated about the world of mangroves!

There are two pieces of music that I had first heard on radio and thought - WOW: the first when I was about 12 was Ives' Three Places in New England, and the second when I was 28ish -and in retrospect it was probably close to the first performance - was Mangrove.

I have a tape of this performance too and remember it vividly. Sculthorpe revised the score after the first performance, the climactic section (with the drumming) is quite different in the revised version.

Hi, thanks for your comment - much appreciated. Yes, some differences indeed, but I have to say I prefer the first version - imo this world premiere displays all the work's magic ingredients in a most convincing manner.

@@PieterdeRooijHolland I wrote a paper on Mangrove when I was at Uni. The impact of that premiere performance had a lot to do with it - the piece made a deep impression and I still think it is one of the best orchestral works by an Australian composer. Certainly one that says: this is undoubtedly the work of an Australian composer.

@@pawdaw Very interesting - I can fully understand your fascination - and you can consider my video upload as the result of my fascination for this very beautiful work.

Another easy option is installing the FREE version of RealPlayer... it will enable you to download YT-videos on your harddisk very easily... did you try that? This one, for instance, is a 87.7MB download, it gets you a flv.-file first, but the RealPlayer programme also allows you to convert this flv.-file to MP3 (a 14,04MB file) in just a minute. If you can't manage I can send you the file, but I recommend using RealPlayer yourself.

Dear Pieter, Thank you so much, I too heard this very recording on r3 here in uk and put it onto cassette but lost the tape and haven't been able to find it until now!! I love this piece! Thank you so much. Trouble is my you tube connection hardly lets me hear it without stopping and starting - would you be able to supply mp3? I would be quite willing to pay for the mp3! Best regards Willbo

Parts of this (especially around 12:10-12:50) seem reminiscent of Ives.
