My wife and I dated when this came out 20 years ago. She died 11 years ago and sometimes when I miss her I watch this ending. It pulls at my heart terribly and is so bittersweet to watch.
I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I had wise words to say but when people are grieving all I can do is be there for you and as my pastor says make some casseroles. Obviously I can't really cook for you but if you want to talk I can be here. If you are of a liberal realigious point of view you might like this short 2:39 video my pastor did. Twenty years ago this game resonated with my life in so many ways, though I'm as yet still searching for my own Rinoa. I grieve with you that you lost yours, but I rejoice with you in the years that you had with her.
Love that we got to see; Laguna and Raine together Squall and Rinoa together Selphie wearing Irvine's hat Zell eating Hotdogs Seifer laughing Man, this game really made me cry.
I frequently remember the Seifer laughing scene. He was a tragic character, and instead of him dying some glorious/dramatic death we just see him fishing at the end. His laugh is what I remember most. He finally found peace and happiness. The older I am the more I appreciate his ending.
Laguna and Raine's story confused me in the game . And I played it through over and over. I thought she died when Laguna went off to war and they never really got together because Laguna was so absent minded I guess. So in the ending it's bittersweet because the time compression allowed them to see each other for a moment? Did they ever really get married? I was always lost on that part.
@Águila701 Sounds about right. My gaming life started with Pong, went on through Space Invaders, Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Super Mario. So as you can imagine, my first Play Station was a revelation.
Squall's smile in 15:16 is just so beautiful , he finally made peace with himself and overcame his fears and he finally is able to be happy again. Such a happy ending.
VaatiOfDarkness I appreciate all kinds of ending, unless they are poorly set up. However, as for my favorite couple of all time, the happily ever after one is the only kind acceptable.
Makes perfect sense for a game full of depression, introversion, and self-doubt to end on an unambiguously happy note, otherwise the characters would have no sense of resolution, and they were the main point of the story, after all( I mean FF8 prioritizes its characters and their interaction and growth way more than its plot, which amounts to a series of CGI cutscenes dragging our peeps from one place on the map to the next) There's just no better way to end such a gloomy and self-reflective work than with cathartic bliss.
@Mr Kitrid FF6's world is still fucked from what Kefka did to it, and if Shadow rejoined, he stays behind to die in the collapsing tower (which also means Relm loses her father without ever knowing she actually got to know him). Terra also got lucky her human side kept her alive (and even then, she could have died if Setzer wasn't there to catch her), with all the espers dying because the current god of magic is dead. You can see they're going to recover from everything eventually, but it's no "boom, everything is magically fixed now" (in fact, they have NO MAGIC to help with that anymore). Are we talking about the same ending?

Eyes on Me was my wedding song. The singer was my sister in law's best friend, who was also the lead singer of a local band. Final Fantasy 8's ending remains my favourite to date.
The greatest game (for me) of all time. I was 12 when I played this game (religiously) back in ‘99. I cried at the end of it. 20 years later and I still cried. No other game in terms of impact and nostalgia will ever come even remotely close to Final Fantasy VIII. It was my childhood.
Damn we played it at the same time. I had to come watch th3 ending because I couldnt remember it. But man now everything is flooding back. 7 8 9 and 10 were the best era of final fantasy games.

Taufiq Zain It gets me every time. Looking back on the night he proposes to Raine while visiting her grave, meeting their daughter there. The climax of Eyes On Me is playing during the flashback. It's all one big tearjerker.
DHeroDarkMagicianGuy Ellone is not their daughter, Raine was taking care of her cause she lost her parents in the war. On the other hand Squall is their son. Best ending ever in video game history. Love how it ties it all up, especially if you take the ending in-game right before this and after the final battle. How SeeD was formed, what happened to Seifer and Laguna, Raine, all of it. Selphie, Quistis, Irvine, Edea, Cid and Zell in the end there. Just an absolute masterpiece. Not to speak of if you wait after the credits, the kiss to tie it all up. I just love this game, what a masterful ending.

You know final fantasy7 will always have a special place in my heart but when I think about a love story this is the love I aspire to. So I think final fantasy8 is my favorite
Not the ring part, the hug is the strongest part in my opinion. That part is a real tearjerker T_T More than 10 years playing this game ocasionally and that particular part always makes me cry
Before Marvel made it cool, FF8 gives you a during credits scene and ANOTHER post credits scene and you have to watch this to know if the main character survives. Take notes, this ending is what all video games should try to live up to.
How much love they put into all of it... I mean his smile isn´t just a smile, it´s a shy and very deep one, you can see the story of his heart... they couldn´t have made it better!!
One of the firsts for me too. I really like her personality. The top of my fav FF girls but there are others that are nice as well. In her time i also liked Garnet though.
I beat this game in 1999 when I was 14,in an era before RUclips, before the internet really was anything. I can not explain in words how this ending blew my mind. Still my favorite game ever at almost 35 now. For me there was life before FFVIII and life after FFVIII.
Well folks, tonight I finally beat this game for the first time after failing to do so 15 years ago. I could never beat Fujin and Raijin on the the Lunatic Pandora due to improper junctions. 15 years later, I finally know how this masterpiece ended. Never give up, guys. Never. :)
I had to replay the game from scratch three times before I beat it. I had been unable to get the hang of junctioning and drawing and refining magic. I became so frustrated that I started from the beginning again for the third time and went completely postal with how I played. By the time I got to Ultimecia, I was so powerful that I destroyed her in about ten minutes, Griever too.
Yeah same here. Took me so long to finally listen to the boring ass tutorials on junctioning magic to attack, strength, luck, status, defense, etc. Didn't realize how big of a difference it makes
read this comment as it was beginning!! how magical! and I completely agree. reflecting upon your journey and its conclusion. and you can't wait to get right back in the saddle for your perfect newgame with all the spoils!
@@cardinaleze3939 Maybe it's faceless Squall and Rinoa suddenly looking like she wants to be Samara/Sadako (from The Ring). Pretty good ending overall, but thank god I knew about that part beforehand...
This ending, the suicide ending in Spec Ops: The Line, Silent Hill 2's endings (minus dog end), and Postal 1's ending never fail to bring tears to my eyes. Ths absolute greatest endings to any video games ever
My favorite FF ending. 9:37 is perfect for such a character-focused game. And it has the classic theme playing. It feels so good and triumphant to see everyone celebrating at the end. There is a lot going on between the characters and you don't even hear dialog! Squall smiling and kissing Rinoa is the cherry on top. You've never seen this guy smile throughout the whole game and it's just perfect to finally see him happy at the end.
This is one of the only FF endings that makes the journey really feel worth it. No shade to all the other endings in FF, but this one is so happy and wholesome. I feels well deserved.
I love the home video at the end. It really feels so cosy and homey seeing the characters goofing off and happy. I remember, in a world before mainstream voice acting in games, being really impressed at 2:39 how you could tell Squall was calling out "Rinoa!" just with his lip movement.
i dont know why people think theories like "rinoa/artemisia" or "squall is dead". This game is so simple, love win always!. This ending is clear and beautiful. One of the happiest ending ever!
square wrote the story in the way that it definitely hints towards rinoa is ultimecia and squall (might) be dead. If you think the story is simple, you haven't played the game enough. There are many details that are too much to be just coincidences
P.G. Ferret I love your interpretation of the developers thoughts and I agree. Also the Squall is dead theory is kinda creepy to think about when you look at the game another time with that mindset.
Squall is alive, but Rinoa will eventually become Ultimecia, it already explained in the middle of story, Rinoa said "What will happen if I become the enemy of the world?" ... Squall answered he will become his knight forever even if she becomes the ultimate enemy, as Squall is not immortal unlike the sorceress, Rinoa probably converted him into the ultimate GF he ever dreamed of, Griever ... And GF usage also erases one's memory, it's also a vital part of the story, that's why Ultimecia didn't recall any of her previous memories
@@Skyliet More like the theory doesn't make any sense when held up to scrutiny, as it requires several leaps of logic and relies on assumptions that the game has proven are false: sorceresses aren't immortal or live longer than a normal human; Squall isn't Griever, as it's instead a monster Ultimecia shaped after Squall's image of the ultimate creature to use against him and his party; and "losing her memories" makes no sense when the game shows that memories erased through GF usage can be recalled when a trigger to them is provided, and if Ultimecia actually were Rinoa, she had no lack of triggers that could have brought back these memories to her, not to mention to utter idiocy that would be involved in dumping her past self into space and certain death.
The overture at the end when we see the garden for the last time gives me chills every time I see/hear it. I don't know how Nubuo does it. Just musical magic.
This is the most satisfying, complete ending Final Fantasy has ever had. The build up with the music until the after the credits' stinger still gets me.
Honestly, Final fantasy VIII has to been the only ff game that has had a complete ending closure. We see what became of everyone, every character, every interaction, it felt like a proper ending.
We don't see what happens to Edea. Also Edea and Seifer don't have closure. In Final Fantasy IV Golbez stayed on the moon because he knew people wouldn't forgive him. Do you think the regular people of that world are going to buy that a Sorceress beyond time and space possessed Edea? Seifer doesn't have that excuse. Both Squall and Laguna never put two and two together.
@@kevintakeda2829 they did'n't. Kitase said that IF a remake would ever happen, it should be made by a young team from square-enix. No confirmation at all.
Squall finally smiles at the end and that's the part that makes me cry 😭 I always cry at the end everytime I beat Final Fantasy I feel so accomplished and sad
I am here today after 15 years, since the very first time I played this game and deeply fall in love with it. My favorite is always FF VIII, then FFX. Bring back so many memories, I went all emotional watching these video again and again.
Thanks to the absolutely beautiful music, the amazing story, the realistic looking characters and the gameplay, this is no doubt the greatest Final Fantasy ever made and quite possibly the best game ever conceived.
Before youtube/napster were huge, i would literally beat the game over and over again just to watch this ending and listen to this song. And i would also cry like a little girl. Every. Single. Time.
This to me will forever be my favourite ending sequence and one of my fondest gaming memories even if the game's story and characters don't hold up all that well compared to other Final Fantasy games. But this was my first FF and it took me two years to finally beat it. On a whim I tried to test myself against the final boss to see how far I still had to level up and to my own disbelieve not only got to Ultimecia's final form but even managed to nickel and dime her down to zero just by having Squall heal Zell, and Zell attack with limit breaks and revive Squall if he dies. Everyone else was already dead. And at two o clock in the morning I sat there and stared at the ending sequence, completely amazed that I actually did it. Never has the ending sequence of any game felt as satisfying as this one.

+Wurzelknecht how on earth can you need 2 years to finish this game? were you allowed to play 10 minutes a day?
MrJogi86 I was 14 and too dumb to work out the junction system, so I was already on Disc 3 when I realised I did everything wrong and started back from the beginning. Then I came to the final dungeon and thought I was too weak, so I went level-grinding for a while but got bored and got fed up with the grinding so I stopped playing it for a while. Some months later I started playing again and thought to myself "I might as well fight the final boss, at least to check how much stronger I still have to get to beat her". But what started as a test-fight suddenly got to the point where I realised I could actually beat her this time with only Squall and Zell as the healer and the reviver respectively.
I found all the characters memorable... I never beat this game as a kid. got lost in ultemcias castle and lost interest. I bought it off psn and literally just beat the game and saw the ending for the very first time. shit gave me Goose bumps from how perfect it was. had to watch it again on here
2018 and I'm just noticing the parallel of Raine/Laguna's rings & Rinoa asking Zell to make her a copy of Squall's ring & implies that Squall's destiny was to live the life that was taken away from Laguna when Raine died.
If you need to define the intended fantasy like endings of Final Fantasy games, this and FFX are the top picks. I think this ending is still to date the most stunning of all. The design and the architect behind FF8's FMVs pioneered the whole realistic feel and look to today's gaming.
Yoshinori Kitase debunked squall being dead in a recent interview :) Hes definitely alive. Interview below. ruclips.net/video/BA1gwFKq7u0/видео.html So there. Eat it.
I remember playing this game 20 years ago, thinking of how much the loner character of Squall couldn't be any further from the person I was... Fast forward 20 years and he's become the only one I can actually identify with. This was the most ambitious title they have had I think. It was a shame it was so far ahead of it's time, because I think this world had the most promise of all the FF titles.
This was the first final fantasy that I got to play through all the way. Same age as you. The funny thing is my junctions back then were probably ass and made the game harder than needed.
Me sentí identificado con un comentario de más abajo... Lo jugué a los 14, y ahora con 25, al ver tan solo un video, como éste, siento que lo estuviese jugando de nuevo, y tooooodos los recuerdos me invaden. No pude evitar emocionarme.
Honestly this is a masterpiece of a game & ending. You don't see this high quality emotion, composition, artistic expression, narrative, direction & music very much. Witcher 3 & God of War best games since the Final Fantasys up to 10.
The best part of the entire Final Fantasy series, and the ending just lack of words perfection :) I finished this game 9 or 10 times in a row. Best game of my youth, tear spins in my eye.
I always thought Squall had been trapped somehow in Oblivion, but looking back on this video I see that Rinoa only does that thing where she puts her finger up when she's doing it to Squall. And at the end she does it to someone outside of the camera range. He survived. A part of my childhood has been answered.
The first 4 and a half minutes was probably the scariest it could've possibly gotten for a Final Fantasy game - I had no idea what they were planning there and why they thought including a frame of a faceless Squall was necessary, but everything after that was probably one of the most uplifting things I could expect from an ending.
I love the end of this Final Fantasy. It's fantastic, beautiful and has some mysterious things. Some frames are great to see over and over again. I just loved. A necessary mention about Seifer being like Seifer, right? :) Hahaha so cool to see him angry and then laughing, like he has reach some kind of redemption.
Every time I watch this for nostalgia reasons I try to prepare myself for 7:06. I try to remind myself that I've beaten the game half a dozen times and I know what is coming. But every time. Every. Single. Time. When that feather floats down and Laguna's scene plays out, my composure fails, and I cannot stop the tears.
The soundtracks back in the FF VII, VIII, and IX era were absolutely mind blowing. Yes, you had amazing cinematics like this but you still had no character voices. The music is what allowed you to feel so many emotions back then and up to this day as well. They knew when and how to execute the perfect musical score for any given scene. The nostalgia of beating this game when I was kid came back all at once when watching this. I'm not saying the music sucked when games like X and X-2 came out (in fact I was so obsessed with X-2 I played to get the 100% ending), but you can't deny the masterpieces that are the PS1 games. Now, having just played the FFVII Remake demo, I can't wait to hear all of the songs again in fully remastered form. It's probably a long shot, but I really hope that they remake FFVIII as well because this game is very dear to my heart.
The wedding ending of FFXV remind me of a familiar old song. Start searching in the FFVII and FFVIII and finally get it! Time flies. So many years passed. FFXV is not that bad, impressive scenery and the feeling of traveling is great, but I think the story of FFVII, FFVIII and FFX makes the best ones of all.
I played a lot of these games. Make it 7, 8, 9, 10 and 10-2. 12, 13 and now 15. But my heart lies with 8 9 and 10. They are beautiful all in a different way.
God, I looove this. This is the best video game ending ever! This music... and the feels... and the music... it`s so good.! Tears me up every time. Did I mention the soundtrack?!
A remake of this masterpiece needs passion, heart, by the end it would break all records, I totally trust in these characters and the great story, this is the only FF which had a "real touch", the costumes, the soundtrack, just everything was amazing

When the story and direction is good enough that you realize that this had no voice overs yet you understand what happened
Yep.
watching with this little context is weird, i never got far in final fantasy 8
Beat the game! It will all make more sense or watch the complete walkthrough,@@walouinsanityshed
the music and scene were so in sync that you just simply... FEEL IT
I beat this game in 1999 when I was 14,in an era before RUclips, before the internet really was anything. I can not explain in words how this ending blew my mind. Still my favorite game ever at almost 35 now. For me there was life before FFVIII and life after FFVIII.
It's such a beautiful love story. Laguna and Julia weren't able to be together, but their son and daughter do in the end. Melts the ol heart.
I always cry like a baby when Raine hugs Laguna. That part always gets me T_T
By the time I got to Ultimecia, I was so powerful that I destroyed her in about ten minutes, Griever too.
or gameshark
Congratulations
Yeah same here. Took me so long to finally listen to the boring ass tutorials on junctioning magic to attack, strength, luck, status, defense, etc. Didn't realize how big of a difference it makes
I hear ya dude. Early 2000s I couldn’t beat adel. It was a gmv to everything you want by vertical horizon that made me go back and finish the game.
Idc what anyone else says, FF8 will always be my favorite one
Im with you there.
I’m here, too. 🎉
9:40 A true real Final Fantasy respect every time you'll hear this you already know it's coming I get goose bump chill.
read this comment as it was beginning!! how magical! and I completely agree. reflecting upon your journey and its conclusion. and you can't wait to get right back in the saddle for your perfect newgame with all the spoils!
The Final Fantasy melody brings tears to my eyes every damn time.
As a dragon quest fan. I'll have to agree on this one...
It's so damn good..
This has to be the most beautiful ending to a game I’ve ever seen.
Beautiful?! THIS THING GIVES ME NIGHTMARES EVERY TIME I THINK ABOUT IT
@@cyanimation1605 WHY? 😂
@@cyanimation1605yes. That part is super scary. Omg what a trip
Every time I see the part with Raine and Laguna...😫👌
Mike 'N J I keep rewatching this scene and it's just masterful how it's paired with the lyrics
You've never seen this guy smile throughout the whole game and it's just perfect to finally see him happy at the end.
seifer smiling makes the video...kidding it's all effing awesome!!!!!
You like my smile?
YESSSSSS
Leonhart I love the reminiscing smile he does
Now you do Pokémon😂 jk i love your content and I thought your name was sick because of how it ties to this game
He’s one of the most underrated ff characters fr
This is one of the only FF endings that makes the journey really feel worth it. No shade to all the other endings in FF, but this one is so happy and wholesome. I feels well deserved.
Best ending to any video game ever imho. Although Horizon Zero Dawn was pretty damn good too.
After I saw ff16 ending, I already come back here to comfort my soul to see the happy ending !😅
My dad really loves this 😂
he even have posters of this game😂
He is a wise man.
Thats a cool af dad.
This ending still makes me cry like baby.. :'(
I love the home video at the end.
@Luna S Square Enix director prohibited anything more than PG-13 stuff in FF titles, so yes, they have to deny it to keep it from hurting youngsters
Just musical magic.
the best final of final fantasy
1999 and still 1000 times better than most of the games coming out today..
Real talk. Square soft >>> square enix.

This is the most satisfying, complete ending Final Fantasy has ever had. The build up with the music until the after the credits' stinger still gets me.
Besides 10-2, this is easily the most rewarding and satisfying ending in all Final fantasy history. The emotions in this ending are so surreal

Squall finally smiles at the end and that's the part that makes me cry 😭 I always cry at the end everytime I beat Final Fantasy I feel so accomplished and sad
I just love this game with my life.
This ending still stands the test of time. One of the greatest stories ever.
15:06 Still gets me everytime :'). Man this whole ending is just amazing. Still watching this 22(!) years after the original release.
I am here today after 15 years, since the very first time I played this game and deeply fall in love with it. My favorite is always FF VIII, then FFX. Bring back so many memories, I went all emotional watching these video again and again.
Seeing rinoa and squall smile at the ending was worth every moment of this precious game!

It's an awesome feeling finally finishing a game that you started a long time ago, isn't it?
One of the most emotionally powerful endings to a game ever. What a masterpiece.
El mejor Final Fantasy de la historia que nostalgia joder...
This was made in 1999? Damn the CGI looks better than The Spirits Within XD
And was on ps1!😍
@@Hirusaga that era with beutiful grafic design, squaresoft so powerful
2018 and I'm just noticing the parallel of Raine/Laguna's rings & Rinoa asking Zell to make her a copy of Squall's ring & implies that Squall's destiny was to live the life that was taken away from Laguna when Raine died.
The girl with the pigtail at the table with Zell was at the library in Balamb the whole game and said to have a crush on him
What a small detail! :O Back when developers paid attention to them.. Amazing!!! No wonder that Final Fantasy 8 is in the top 5 best game ever.

The Final Fantasy Medley that plays in the credits is the most heartwarming song I have ever heard
Hands down best ff song ever in my book
If you need to define the intended fantasy like endings of Final Fantasy games, this and FFX are the top picks. I think this ending is still to date the most stunning of all. The design and the architect behind FF8's FMVs pioneered the whole realistic feel and look to today's gaming.
squall is still alive
+Edward H no hes not he clearly died
Yes he’s still alive didn’t you see rinoa’s face when she looked at squall she’s smiling and she saved him
Yoshinori Kitase debunked squall being dead in a recent interview :) Hes definitely alive. Interview below.
ruclips.net/video/BA1gwFKq7u0/видео.html
So there. Eat it.
Kitase also says Rinoa isn’t Ultimecia despite all the evidence.
But THEY SHOW SQUALL AFTER THE CREDITS.
Oh God. The feels. I payed this game when I was 15 or so. I'm 34 now and this ending still brings me comfort. Still have the original discs...

Honestly this is a masterpiece of a game & ending. You don't see this high quality emotion, composition, artistic expression, narrative, direction & music very much. Witcher 3 & God of War best games since the Final Fantasys up to 10.
40 years old hardcore gamer here... and this game is on my top 5. andi played hundreds and hundreds of videogames. it get u right in the feels.
The best part of the entire Final Fantasy series, and the ending just lack of words perfection :) I finished this game 9 or 10 times in a row. Best game of my youth, tear spins in my eye.
FFVIII, I played to the end more than 100 times, only for this song. Back then, there wasn't internet...
Me too my dude! Me too! Then I got hold on a video card to transfer it to a VCR and made VHS-Cassette of all the cut cutscenes. Way before internet!
I always thought Squall had been trapped somehow in Oblivion, but looking back on this video I see that Rinoa only does that thing where she puts her finger up when she's doing it to Squall. And at the end she does it to someone outside of the camera range. He survived. A part of my childhood has been answered.
Did you not wait until after the credits? You see him.
same with me bro i thought squall was trap there. I didnt see the after credit
im a grown ass man and this ending gets me all emotional every damn time
Best game I played in 1990's. very romantic.
The first 4 and a half minutes was probably the scariest it could've possibly gotten for a Final Fantasy game - I had no idea what they were planning there and why they thought including a frame of a faceless Squall was necessary, but everything after that was probably one of the most uplifting things I could expect from an ending.
bro its the scariest thing I've ever seen
I love the end of this Final Fantasy. It's fantastic, beautiful and has some mysterious things.
Some frames are great to see over and over again. I just loved.
A necessary mention about Seifer being like Seifer, right? :) Hahaha so cool to see him angry and then laughing, like he has reach some kind of redemption.
lie down, try not to cry, cries alot.
I'm 44 and I still cry at this ending .... :(
Same here
Every time I watch this for nostalgia reasons I try to prepare myself for 7:06. I try to remind myself that I've beaten the game half a dozen times and I know what is coming. But every time. Every. Single. Time. When that feather floats down and Laguna's scene plays out, my composure fails, and I cannot stop the tears.
I feel the same exact way every time with that scene!
I love this ending so much, definitly one of the happiest endings in FF! Its so nice to see them all celebrating at the end
Man... This ending is so intense. So deep and emotional. One of the best video game ever. From the beginning to the end.
Final Fantasy 8 has the best Final Fantasy overture.
9 is close - but I will argue to I'm blue in the face how this is the perfect final fantasy game in almost every way
The wedding ending of FFXV remind me of a familiar old song.
