As long as you have solar you can go as long as you want. It’s not your battery was filled once and you using that. 200w is usually a min size given year round usage for a small fridge.
We had a 105a so therefore with our consumption and moderate solar it was gradually reducing down was interested to see if our setup would be adequate for our style of van life which it is to be honest Absolutely agree if you can get good solar input which the uk is not always forthcoming 😂
Enjoyed that, only ever been to Hay for the festival a couple of times. It's so busy then. Must go to look round the castle and explore the town when it's more peaceful.
Thank you both for another wonderful vlog of our little site, we are over the moon with your promotion of Dark Orchard, Hay on Wye and the Castle which we also think is fabulous. Duggans the cake and tart makers on the market have now moved in to a stall in town so goodies are now available every day!!! A new carving has been added this week to the Bailey Walk sculptures, a Red Kite. so a perfect excuse to come back in 2023 to check them out. I'm not entirely sure the goodies were for sharing but you are forgiven Stew for you great photos and footage. We loved the TD & H footage would love to know where you were as that looked a fabulous location. Looking forward to the next vlog😀😀
Hi Lynda. Our pleasure 🥰 Great to hear Duggans cake n tart makers are now available everyday we are next there !! Looking forward to seeing the Red Kite on our next visit which will definitely be 2023 ! Take care ☺️ jane
We enjoyed that and you certainly did a good job promoting Hay-on-Wye. The food from the market looked delicious 😋 You both looked very relaxed on that CL and the battery set up worked well. Look forward to your next trip 🤗❤️
Classic Jane moment with her T D & H at Stew's expense! So pleased to hear how well the leisure battery set up copes with the electrical loads without hook up and a good tip with keeping the fridge area cool on very hot days, well done guys. Hay tourist info people must be well chuffed with the excellent promo work.
Thanks for watching commenting and above all supporting us …. It was a good test as we know what at least it can do if we need it with management. Hay is a good place for us
Oh Jane...you are cheeky! 😂😂enjoyed the vlog. Not had a twix in a long time.. now you have put me in the notion and it’s nearly 9 pm! Looking forward to your next vlog!
Just about to take the plunge on a lithium leisure battery. The more videos i watch the more sold on the idea i become. + they seam to be the only thing in today's economy that has come down in price. Great video again guys :))
Yes they are expensive but make life so much easier - definitely get a dc to dc charger off the alternator to as the fast charge is critical Thanks for watching
You would like it guys next time you are down drop in to our home town for a night and we will show you around …. Thanks for watching and all the support
Great video Stew and Jane, I loved south Wales when I was a lorry driver, there was a small lorry park near Hay on Wye I used to stop at, and in the summer I walked along to a lovely old pub for an after-dinner pint. I can see how those seven days would've relaxed you, I was chilled out just watching you two. Keep up the good work, or relaxation.
I was looking forward to seeing how you went on here, and you managed easily. I’ve also been considering my power options, lithium/solar/portable power banks, to allow for more off grid camping for longer periods and use of a laptop, etc. You look to have a really great set up now both tech wise and pitch up wise, and both looked really relaxed at such a lovely site. Great to see. Some lovely drone flying over and along the river. I’ll check out the couple’s channel you mention. Glad the little fridge tip was useful & thank you for the mention 🙏. Take care both 😊
Thanks Sue your tip is a great one … re poweroak I wish the wattage was a bit higher to allow other devices like a small induction hob or electric cockpot. You can certainly get them but they are a little bigger to store - thanks for watching
Good news about the battery life. Makes off-grid camping much less stressful when you're never worrying about charge. And, importantly, it means if you find a great wild spot you're under no pressure to move on! Lovely campsite. Can you fish in the river or is it private?
Yep it was more about clarity that the batteries will do it for us if needed - you will be in a better position with two Re fishing you can fish what is called the warren so where we were all the way to the bridge on the hay side only. You need a standard license plus a permit for the day or week you can get from the outdoor shop in Hay - I can dig it out the details if ever you want it
@@getawaygeese Cheers. Fishing sounds reasonable. Surprised you didn't have a go? Re battery life...we probs went over the top but it does mean we never even think about it...or at least we haven't so far x
Most enjoyable, thankyou. Love Hay on Wye, but never visited the castle, so must do next time ! It's such an interesting little place, especially on market days.
another great video, that site looks wonderful and so peaceful. Dick oops sorry Stew how was the wrap? Glad all the batteries things worked out good for you. looking forward to your next adventure. ATB
I get called many things and very rarely Stew 😂 Wrap is a good alternative to keep the egg in We mainly are one or two nights but it was good to know how they stand up so a useful test with management
Nice one guys.. I would have thought a 110ah lithium and 120w solar would last almost indefinitely in summer especially with the poweoak as well. Looking forward to the Ireland stuff. Safe travels.
Hi mate - Yep I think if you are in full sun and manage the combination seem to hold up I think if no solar then you will need to turn the van over occasionally at some stage. It was a useful test and if nothing else a confidence point for us
So they were not Janes lol the gift was wrongly stated when handed to us I merely put the error tight ….. no not yet mate on the list we are in Ireland so stay tuned next week
@Upsidedownfoodpyramid lol to be honest we were surprised to although we did manage our electric well that week but proved what you could do - sun helped
@@getawaygeeseif you calculate it all out it will work, charge rate vs battery rated aH vs load in wH. If you are careful and use minimum power it works out. The hard part is understanding inrush, demand factor, even battery temperature and if it is a cloudy day. Knowing this will help you size the capacity of the battery and the size of the panels. Another factor is voltage, as the voltage drops on the battery the flow goes up on a resistive load increasing the voltage drop across the conductors. So the question of the day is how many more days could you have done this before you needed to either use curtail power usage or stop and recharge from an external source
You guys are hilarious “ Tom D Harry” ! You have made it onto my RUclips list of 3 x Van life to follow, 1- Life is too short; 2- Wee Broon Van; 3- GetawayGeese 👍✅

Tom “Dick” and Harry! Nice little site. Good way to test your electric. Like the power banks for the cameras. That was a nice van build. Pleased you got to go to the castle. We love Rummykub.🤣 solar really helps doesn’t it? Safe travels both
Yep the solar definitely helps but the land of the sun is very seasonal. Power bank for us is so useful but at times as you know I wish it was say 500w output as then maybe water boiling and your small cook pot would come into play
🤣🤣🤣Tom, Dick and Harry!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 The castle was closed for the rest of the season when we went there a few weeks ago. Will have to go back again! Nice place though! Thanks for sharing. Ju 😁
Hi Hay castle was closed in for a few weeks in September to carry out some snagging which required scaffolding so not safe for visitors but it has been open since, and has a fabulous list of day and evening events planned making the most of the space, please do come back and try again. and if you haven't been in Hay for Market Day that is also worth a visit :)
Looks a very peaceful campsite. We couldn't get parked up last time we tried to go to Hay on Wye so a site in walking distance would be really good so will look it up. We don't have a power bank, although I do keep saying we need one but Karl says we don't.🙄 I did think with using the Power Oak your batteries would be fine. We managed 3 days in winter without moving and only have 2 AGM 95ah batteries and we survived, just about lol. I knew Jane would say Stew was Dick to the Tom, Dick and Harry trio.😆
@@getawaygeese funny though as when I watched the previous video I said to my son in law, I reckon Stew will be the Dick in that trio!!🤣🤣 No offence though, it's not what we think, it's what we think Jane would think.😂😂
Thanks you for your reply much appreciated. I’m looking to change to lithium but am concerned about buying the right size amp hour battery. May I ask does your 105ah provide all your needs, or do you feel you may benefit from a slightly larger battery. Personally I have a old 1997 swift mondial (fits in a regular car spot) and apart from the usual basic stuff would like to run the fridge off it. Usually go no more than 10 days off grid, with your set up do you feel that could be achievable for you. Also can I ask did you just swap out your batteries or did you have to make any changes. Kind regards Paul
I think 10 days could be a stretch you may need a bigger output but it all depends on if you are able to re charge it via solar as you can get portable panels and of course you need to be in the sun. Hi can I ask did you run the fridge off the battery
The fridge runs off the leisure battery yes I think it pulls around 50w but obviously not on constantly - so if the solar is recharging that helps

I think 10 days could be a stretch you may need a bigger output but it all depends on if you are able to re charge it via solar as you can get portable panels and of course you need to be in the sun. With 50w being pulled regularly all day and night as the fridge comes on it’s going to need replenishing
