    You are right. Anything over 33 to 60 is very comfortable. I have a nice burl log that I have sliced that would make a real nice table to bench for that spot. I will email pics tomorrow. We really enjoyed this video. I am kicking myself for selling my sail right sowing machine before I left Florida. I could really use it now to make black out curtains for the house.

    The opening segment was ... majestic! Love your channel. Interesting ideas on how to adapt your space. Might take time (and money as you mentioned..)
    Minimalist vs. Maximalist? I don't know about that. We all have our stuff that we've accumulated over the years for whatever reason (I'm 67 years old - don't get me started.) You seem to be quite aware of your space and situation, perhaps more than most. I have faith in you.

Some days, as I am tripping over boxes, I feel like a hoarder. LOL 😉💛

    Your sewing machines appear to be vintage. I must confess I have a stable of vintage Singers. Would be interesting to see the machines up close. I have a pair of Singer 201-2's; 1941 and 1953. They sew amazingly. I'm now to the point friends gift me old machines, knowing I love them. I'm up to maybe 11 Vintage ones, 5 of which sew. The rest I am restoring.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад

      Hi Clsywnch! I have two vintage machines. One is from the 1800's and the other is from the early 20th century. I am not able to find much information on either of them. The 1800's machine is a Yukon and works with a shuttle bobbin, sadly the bobbin was not in the machine at time of purchase. I have attempted to find a replacement, yet everyone I have attempted has been just slightly oversized. The other machine, I believe is a Singer even though it does not have a Singler logo anywhere on it. I believe it was a Singer line sold in Japan just after the war. It is a Majestic 15. I should have paid to have these restored before moving to Alaska. They might just be decoration at this point. But I also have a modern machine, and do hand sew as well. I will show the older machines in a future video. Thanks for the inquiry. 🤗💛

    Even though the cabin looks quite large from the outside, the inside, at least on video, doesn’t look very big. Maybe look on RUclips for from storage advice even though you may know exactly what you need. ❤️🌹

      Hi Sarah! The camera makes the rooms look much smaller than they actually are. Each room is about 15' x 15', and the living room is actually about 25' x 15'! It is a good size, but nonetheless, the Japanese dresser, and the storage upstairs will be narrow as to not take up too much floor space. Thanks for the suggestion, too! Much appreciated. 🤗💛

    More alaskan scenery YAHOO!! You have some very well thought out ideas for your cabin, I was concerned that with all the walls and cabinets that heat circulation could be a problem (than you answer that concern in your video) as usual you have looked, planned and spent the time and energy to figure out what is the best route for you to take. Pat yourself on the back for another great job!!! CMQCA++

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад

      Ah, thank you, Chip! This year, I am hoping that I can show even more of Alaska through my lens. I, too, was concerned about dividing up the cabin and blocking off the heat flow. Luckily, the heat rises, and the lofts are really warm as is, but the fan will still have the ability to push the warm air down into the main floor. And the oil burner will still be used to heat the living room. Even with curtains pulled up and out of the way, the heat from the woodstove really doesn't make its way into the living room despite there not being a wall there. A rock wall or something along those lines should help with heat retention all around. 🤗💛

    I would suggest that you evaluate your homestead opportunities. You have two structures that could be turned into short term rentals. The cabin of course but also that roundish building. The cabin plus 3-4 camper spots could bring in cash quickly. Camper spots could be with or without any electric. You could also offer “work for campsite “. If you go thru Harvest Host you would have insurance and some vetting. They require all members to be self contained with leave no trace. You can set day stay limits. And block out days. It’s free to hosts. U can include Boondockers Welcome members.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад

      Hi Beverly! Yes, the suggestion to turn the bunkhouse into a short-term rental has been made before. The roundish building is not as structurally sound as it might appear. It is mostly a tarp covered in foam over a log frame. There is no floor, no windows, and not safe to even walk in. I do see how the camper and Air B&B idea would be appealing to some, and could be lucrative, however, I honestly came to Alaska to be alone. I am such a giving person, that I tend to worry too much about others comforts that I forget to take care of my own. And I told myself when I left Colorado that I was going to live life on my terms now. In my way and in my own time. And so far, this is exactly what I have done. I would love to keep it that way. I also enjoy how absolutely quite it is here. I rarely hear a vehicle, and unless I go into town, I don't see another person for weeks on end. It is just as I imagined it. I do thank you for the suggestions though. And if it were not for these wants of mine, I would definitely look into them. Much appreciated. 🤗💛

    Oh man, when I look at the interior of your cabin, my mind immediately wonders how many spiders, insects and lizards are lurking. Having grown up in rural Australia, living in old wooden homes, I still live in fear of huntsmen, night time lizard visitors and all manner of creepy crawly critters staring at me from the wooden beams.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад +1

      Hi Kate! While Alaska does have spiders, there are none which are venomous. Luckily! Nor do we have any lizards or snakes. I know exactly what you mean about fearing the huntsmen! In Colorado we did not have them, but instead had Brown Recluse and Black Widow spiders. The Black Widows were very common in basements and sheds. So glad Alaska does not have that issue! 😳

    Ok first things first I knew your place was large but I didn't understand until this video just how large. It sounds like you have most of your spaces figured out and by the end youll have made that cabin reflect your personality. As for the lighter clothing it just means your body has acclimated to the Alaskan climate. We Alaskans just can't take the heat. One of the reasons we are all drawn to this neck of thw woods I think. Good luck with the renovations cant wait to see how things shape up.

      Hi Lissa! I agree with you about going into a store that has the heat cranked up is the worst! 😓 I have two vintage machines. My husband puts the caribou meat in the bath tub. The hair rises to the top of the water. It removes blood. As he cuts off the big muscle groups, he puts them in the sink with water.
    When he gets down to the steaks he squeezes them in the water and it removes even more of the blood. It really lightens up the flavor. Same thing with spruce hens.

    I've wondered why the weather feels so much warmer in Alaska than the lower 48. I've come to the conclusion it is due to two things. the first is the angle of the sun. the sun angle hits us more on the whole body instead of just the tops of our heads. The second is the thickness of the atmosphere. It is the thinnest at the poles and thickest at the equator. I'm not sure if that's completely true or not but that's my two cents.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад +1

      Hi Bill! I had heard this theory about the angle of the sun before, and it makes sense to me! I have always thought that 40 degrees Fahrenheit was the most comfortable outdoor temperature, so maybe it's just me!! 🤣 I had no idea that the atmosphere was thinner at the poles. I thought that elevation had to do with a change in the atmosphere, but don't take my word for it. 😜

    Storage is so important and girl you have the space for it! Great ideas, love them all. I’m something if an Orientalist myself and am very fond of the Japanese aesthetic so I’m really interested to see your sitting room come together. If I didn’t have a giant furnace vent under my stairs I’d go for those under stair cabinets in a heartbeat. However at 35 degrees Fahrenheit I’m chilled to the bone. Lived in Hawaii for 25 years and think that permanently reset my metabolism.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад +1

      Hi Christine! This cabin is huge and yet has no real storage built in. Crazy! I have always loved the Japanese aesthetic and am looking forward to properly displaying my Japanese items in a room that does them justice. I still have to be careful when it comes to the tonsu dresser as I have the stairs leading to the cellar to contend with. The dresser will be narrow so not to eat up too much floor space in the livingroom, but still allow for storage and beauty.
      Funny how our bodies adapt to certain temps and then cannot reacclimate to new surroundings. I have always felt most comfortable at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. 50 is a nice inside temperature, but I have to hand it to you as I could not handle the warmth of Hawaii. Beautiful but I would melt. 😉💛

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska

      Hi Brooklyn! To be honest, I am only slightly concerned about the heat loss. The upper floor is generally about 15-20 degrees warmer despite the oil burner and wood stove being on the main floor. If anything, I am hoping that it will trap some of that heat downstairs. I won't be completely blocking off the lofts from the main floor, and thanks to the ceiling fan that my son installed, I will be able to circulate the air so that the cabin should still stay relatively warm throughout. Great question though! Thanks for asking. 🤗💛

    That’s one of the perks living on the mainland is being able to jump in your car and taking a drive. I do miss that. The scenery on the drive was beautiful.
    Sounds like a good plan for some additional storage.

      Storage is so needed in this cabin! I can't believe that the previous owners never built any in. But then again maybe I just have too much stuff! 🤣 And those stairs scare me!!!! Good evening, what a lovely drive you had. My son just picked me up from girlsnight out. We had so much fun, but hate the weather, another snowstorm. So over and done with this winter! 😅 My son was out with the snowblower - wearing shorts, so I guess we have the same attire here! And summertime tomorrow, yayy! 🌞 I dont know if you have Ikea in Alaska, or even the online shop, but ikea has amazing storage solutions, and they are easy to hack, so you can use them for your storage solutions. 😅 I got a display walk in closet system from my sons work, they were throwing it out, and I got it for free. Got it professionally installed by my son and his work collegue. Very happy with it. I was thinking of getting doors, but I have boxes instead and it is very practical and store all my clothes, bedlinen and towels. 🙂 it has different drawers and colors on the shelves and so on, as it was a display piece, it have all the fun gadgets as led lights in the clothes rack and inside one of the drawers, which is a jewellery box. Love it! How is the situation with mice in your basement? Driving to work on Friday morning I saw a creature I did not know. Googled it, and it was a snowmouse! (Mistela Nivalis) It is in the marten family, so it is actually killing mice - what a wonderful animal! 😂

      Hi Ibislife! Your son is such a nice guy! Glad you had a great time on your girls night out! It is snowing again here too, after a few days of 40-degree weather and lots of sunshine. Hopefully your summer sticks around! 😁 Ooh, I hadn't thought about Ikea! We don't have one here in Alaska, and I wonder if they would ship it here. A lot of places won't ship to this part of Alaska, even stores that are here and ship to other areas of the state won't ship to this side of the state. And many freight companies won't ship direct to home here. They actually have written in their contracts won't ship to addresses on such and such highway or road. But the storage unit you described sounds awesome! I am definitely going to have to look at their online store and see if they will ship here. I have some really amazing transformations of some of their furniture pieces. Haven't seen any mice in the cellar for quite some time, I think because the snow is blocking their entrances. But had an ermine in the arctic entry last week. Never saw it but it was making quite the rackets. I know it was an ermine, because Kenai does not seem to mind them or the voles in the slightest, but the mice and squirrels he wants nothing to do with! He is so smart!🤣 I have never heard of a snowmouse! I am going to have to look that up! Sounds like an awesome creature to have around! I wonder if we have them here in Alaska. Great chatting with you as always! Until next time, take care and be careful out there! 🤗💛

    1. What did you put in the box at the transfer station?
    2. What kind of sewing do you do? I sew too as you know, and thought I saw the shadow of an antique sewing machine?
    3. What kind of wood cooker are you looking at?
    Btw, we lost our power this evening (of course while I had 7 loaves of zucchini chocolate chip bread in the oven 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️) and we were both watching...Jeff is worried about that loose railing as am I and the open steps down- I know you're going to build new, but jeeze be careful. Love your plans for the cabin, can't wait to see the transformation!! (Is the post box open yet) love ya sistah!!!!!!❤

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад +1

      Hi Leigh! You're going to be so disappointed to know that it was just garbage that went into the transfer station. 😂 I have two antique sewing machines. One is from the 1800's but is missing it's the bobbin. I have purchased bobbins off of Ebay hoping that they will fit but no luck so far. As far as the type of sewing that I do, I mostly have sewn my own clothes. Though I have not done so for many years. Looking forward to getting back into it.
      As for the wood cook stove, I am not entirely sure. I want it to not only allow for a greater range of cooking, but also be the primary heat source for the cabin. I think that I might need to call some manufacturers and get their specs on how many square feet will their cook stoves heat, the average BTU outputs, etc...
      Yes, the railings upstairs are not going to save anyone should the fall against them, and not having an outside railing on the stairs freaks me out. 😲 The PO box is open! 😉 I just opened it yesterday. Hope you were able to salvage the loaves of bread! Seven loaves of zucchini bread would be bad enough to lose but with chocolate chips in there too, that would be devasting! 🤣💛

    • @oldtavernfarm
      @oldtavernfarm Год назад +1

      Oh great!! I'll be sending a box soon! Btw, I have an antique sewing machine from the 1800s that I think is complete. It's a Singer. I'll have to look to be 100% sure the bobbin is there. It's in a wood and cast iron cabinet that Jeff uses as a side table to his recliner- the machen drops down into the wood so I'll clear the table and raise it to see- if you have a Singer too! Check out Lehman's for your stove, they're specialists( I'm sure you've already heard that from multiple people lol). The pigs got the bread-they had pancaked by the following morning and I redid the whole thing. But they're beautiful and in my freezer awaiting opening day this Friday (Good Friday) for the Cookie Cart! I'm so nervous lol. But its SPRING!! YAY!!!

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Год назад +1

      Hi Leigh! I will keep an eye out for the box. My sewing machine from the 1800's is a Yukon. I think it was either made by Davis or White and has a shuttle style bobbin. I have the treadle for the machine but don't have the top. I have plans to make a new top eventually. I have another antique sewing machine but believe this one to be from the turn of the century, and I do think it is a Singer, but has Majestic painted on the side of it in bright red colors. I think the Majestic was sold in Japan as that is the only other place that I have seen them. Yes, I had originally thought about buying the stove from Lehman's and shipping it up here. And I have been considering calling up Obidiah too! I know that they will help find the right stove out of their catalog for the size home you have and where in the home the stove will live. I love your cookie cart! At times, I wish there was enough traffic on the road I live on to support something like that, but then again no. 😂 Here's to a productive and prosperous spring! 😉💛

      Hi Oliver! Thank you. I am glad you liked the video. Alaska is such a beautiful state and I am happy that I get to share it with you! It has been snowing for the past three or four days now, but I know that it will warm up soon. And then I will be able to show you even more of what Alaska has to offer. 😉💛
