Keychron is an enthusiast brand, and even ordinary people touch type now. The difference between the two backlight types is basically down to preferences in aesthetics
RGB is pointless anyway. Least it displays around the the keys. Shine through key caps are shit in quality. Once you get into the hobby big time nobody does shine through.
Lenar makes a good point. For someone who wants shine through, they might be happier with a membrane keyboard. I got the keyboard bug this year and ended up buying two different Keychrons. (Need to take a rest.) I bought both with the white LED option. Also bought aftermarket keycaps for both boards simply 'cause I didn't like the OEM caps. Neither set has shine through, something I didn't really foresee. I really didn't want RGB. I probably would've accepted RGB, if there were no other choice. Reviewers don't talk much about keycap shine-through or keycap profiles. These two things are the biggest obstacles to someone who wants to casually enjoy the hobby without spending a fortune. Especially if they want MacOS symbols.
Useful. Think it's the first review on youtube of the new S1. Think I'm fine with choosing the NuPhy Air75 over this. Hopefully they get firmware improved (be nice to customize the F keys more) but other than that I see more pluses for the NuPhy. Any experience with them?
I had originally planned on getting an air75 when I was thinking of getting a low profile keyboard but the price went up a lot and it wasn't reprogrammable either so I passed on it.
@@ulaulalaulaulala it's not programmable, you can just swap key functions. Programmable means it literally runs code you can write, and that code does whatever you want. And there are visual configurators that generate that code for you that support layering and other advanced features not supported anywhere else
Does the S1 use all standard stabilizers? I'd like to use the Womier XVX low profile PBT keycaps since they're shine through but am unsure if they will fit on the stabilized keys. The keycaps are universally compatible with all standard Cherry MX and Gateron switches and stabilizers. I noticed Rtings mentioned the shift keys use non-standard stabilizers in the shift keys on the S1 but Reddit users are saying that these keycaps are compatible so I'm unsure if they'll work.
I love this keeb. 75% is my favorite format. I could not swap some of the keycaps with the stabilizers for some reason with my black and white kit from their website. The switches are different for these keys.
Which keycap set did you order and which keys didn't fit? I'd like to replace the stock keycaps with PBT shine through keycaps but am unsure if any will fit this board.
caps lock, when depressed, does change the color of the LED underneath (e.g., I have the LED set to constant red/purple and when caps lock is on that key shines a blue light onto the tab key . . . it is more obvious than it reads). Unsure if that was your concern.
I got this keyboard yesterday and so far I like everything about it. Got it with blue switches. My other keyboard - $240 Realforce 87u with topre switches - is great too (ahh that Thock sound if you know what I mean...) but had to return to its box on the shelf in the basement for some rest. Sorry Realforce, it's nothing personal.
There is no option to buy them with transparent lettering keycaps unfortunately, but you can purchase separate low profile keycaps that are shine through on their website, just make sure they are the right ones; it will say that they are not compatible with the S1 in the description if they are the wrong ones.
@@pecata Nice, glad you like it. Gave my k1 v4 to my wife after buying the S1, they are both nice keyboards but I like the S1 for the more custom mechanical feel, but I miss the Bluetooth functionality because I do travel with it.
I wish Keychron went with Kailh instead of Gateron. I typed on Kailh low profile switches for the past 3 years and I find Gaterons unpleasant. Shame because otherwise I love Keychron design.
what's the point of a backlight that doesn't shine through the keys? I don't get it
This is actually making me consider something else rather than the S1

You can tell my guy's a keyboard enthusiast bc he got the natural cap pullers on the ends of his fingers
They’re the pro level Keratin version too, so definitely 😂
Sound test 17:32 :P you're welcome ;)
Do you know if you can open this keyboard up to tape mod it? And would it be worth tape modding?
Honest review!
Can you use non-Keychron keycaps for space, enter, shift and so on? I have a K3, and those keycaps are Keychron-only design 😢
If it’s set to windows mode will Alt+f4 close everything out like a normal windows set keyboard?
Thanks for this perfect review. Just orderd one!

How is your nuphy air75? I am thinking between the s1 and nuphy. Many people claim that nuphy feels rather cheap (build quality and overall).
