    This is the BEST version of this piece I have ever heard! I sang this in college in 1973, and I never thought I'd hear a better version. But this is the BEST.

    Oh my gosh -- this is absolutely riveting. I hope you guys won. This gave me chills. One of my favorite songs, and I LOVE chamber singing with one voice to a part. Brilliant -- Congratulations!

    This was sung in perfection. Again having sung this song before, I understand how difficult this piece was - and I was the tenor!

      I too sang this as a tenor! I feel like this piece is straight-up made for tenors; it's one of the songs I've enjoyed singing most.

    Can't sing enough praise for this rendition. Somewhere, Maestro Holst is smiling.

    Abroad as I was walking
    One evening in the spring
    I heard a maid in Bedlam
    So sweetly for to sing;
    Her chain she rattled with her hands
    And thus replied she:
    Chorus:
    I love my love because I know
    My love loves me
    Oh cruel were his parents
    Who sent my love to sea
    And cruel was the ship
    That bore my love from me:
    Yet I love his parents since they’re his
    Although they’ve ruined me:
    Chorus
    "With straw I'll weave a garland,
    I'll weave it very fine;
    With roses, lilies, daisies,
    I'll mix the eglantine;
    And I'll present it to my love when he returns from sea.
    For...
    Chorus
    Just as she there sat weeping
    Her love he came on land
    Then, hearing she was in Bedlam
    He ran straight out of hand;
    He flew into her snow-white arms
    And thus replied he:
    Chorus
    She said: “My love don’t frighten me,
    are you my love or no?”
    “O yes, my dearest Nancy,
    I am your love, also
    I am returned to make amends
    for all your injury.”
    Chorus
    So now these two are married,
    And happy may they be
    Like turtle doves together,
    In love and unity.
    All pretty maids with patience wait
    That have got loves at sea;
    Chorus

    This is the best live performance of this piece I can find on RUclips. Your choices in articulation express the story well.

    So this is the first APOLLO5 recording I've ever heard. I expected the man in the middle to the bass and the one to his right to be a contra tenor. how wrong I was. They all have a great tone for their voice parts though, a joy to listen to.

    Amazing. Makes versions with full choirs seem completely redundant. The dynamics are allowed to come through due to the space between voices. The odd flat note is actually charming and easily forgiven.

    Beautiful. Astonishing. It takes Spaniards to sing this piece by an English born German to it's best degree. There is a lesson here...

    My personal take: I hate it when I hear a choir piece like this and there's someone using vibrato. It just sounds too jarring and it brings the focus away from the piece and to whoever is doing the vibrato. Personally, I like it when it sounds all uniform and harmonious. To me, vibrato sounds a lot better when it's a solo act or when it is utilized as an effect for the piece rather than enhancing the vocals. I really like this piece and the best one I've heard so far was from the Cambridge singers.
    Other than that, it was a good performance.
