I meet him once in England in the late 60s when he 1st started wrestling and I can tell you 1st hand TV never did him justice just on how big he was.. Back in them days he wasn't as heavy but still huge.. I watched him doing drop kicks and jumping off the top rope when I was a kid.. He was truly amazing to watch in the ring bk in them days.. I meet him after the show and shook his giant hand with my tiny 10 year old hand and he was a total gentleman to me and my parents.. RIP big guy.. X

I was fortunate to see Andre the Giant during a house show in early 1990. Andre was walking out of a tunnel like entrance in the arena and the crowd was dead silent because they were in awe of him and once he was clear of the tunnel, an arena employee had to tell him he's clear so he could stand up straight. And when he did, God damn he was huge. Of course you notice how big he is watching him on tv but in person, it's a sight that can't be explained because he was so huge.

I grew up watching wrestling (when the NWO and Wolfpac were a thing) … my love of wrestling grew because my dad has always loved it. He’s on hospice now and so many of my memories are of my dad and I watching wrestling. I remember him talking about one wrestler who was a “Giant”. He introduced me to Andre and I’ll be honest and say … he absolutely scared me.
I’m an adult now and after watching “Autopsy … The Last Hours Of…” and my heart broke!! I’ve been researching about his life since then and it seems like his heart was as big as he was. I was able to find his last match and goodness …. His life was passing in front of us.
Legends Never Die. I hope he knows how loved he still is 💜

One time years ago he was passing through our small village when he stopped at a local garage to fuel up and use the men's room, while in the bathroom the owner of the garage told one of his mechanics who was a tough guy that there was a man in the bathroom that was going to kick his ass when he came out. So he's over by the door when Andre unfolded himself out of the door of that small bathroom, needless to say Larry didn't feel so tough anymore, all he could say was he's a big fucking man.

I worked with a fellow who had the same glandular disorder as Andre and he was about seven feet tall and still growing. I was a welding foreman at the time and acted as a pre-inspector before the QC came to inspect the weld. One day I called Ralph on a couple of flaws and he came unglued. At 5'8" I didn't back down but he still scared the hell out of me. He refused to fix the problems and stormed away. I fixed the flaws and debated whether he should be written up or not. His partner asked me if I could just leave it be and I told him that I would that one time but don't let it happen again. After that whenever I came around Ralph would just walk away to let me do my job.
A few weeks later the room next to mine in camp became available and guess who moved in. I wasn't happy about it but I caught him in the hall and told him I hoped things were okay between us. He said yes, things were square and then went on to explain why he was so angry when I called him on his work. It seems he took a monthly injection for his condition and when it was close to when he was to receive his next shot he got very distraught and tended to act out. We went for supper together that evening and talked about things in general. Ralph was actually a pretty nice guy but he admitted he had some trouble in life. Beds didn't fit him nor did chairs. He always had to get special safety gear because normal sizes didn't fit him. (A standard hard hat looked like a bump on top of his head) Coveralls had to be special order. Outside of work people always pointed him out and stared. He had trouble getting a car so he opted out for a full size van and had the seat moved back 6". He told me his sister had the same disorder and it was even worse for her at 6'9". Any date she did manage to get was normally a "one of" because the guy did it on a bet or found it too embarrassing to be seen with her. She was still living and working at home with their parents because being out in public was painful for her. Too many people were nasty and spiteful to her.
After that evening I understood far better what it is like to be different and I don't know how I would handle it. While Ralph and I never became friends, we did share a mutual respect for one another. I would do my inspections and Ralph would do his best to make sure everything was as it should be so we did not have problems with one another. If he was having trouble getting equipment or fitting into where the work was, I would make sure he got what he needed or talk to his foreman about putting someplace where the work was better suited to his size. His fitter once told me that if someone was bad mouthing me behind my back, Ralph would straighten them out. Somehow that was ironic. You see, if someone was running Ralph down or laughing at his expense and I heard about it, they got told. If they continued I would threaten to have them written up and fired for harassment of a fellow worker.
I never worked with Ralph again. I was told a few years later that he had left the trade because his illness had become so painful he just couldn't do the work. But thanks to Ralph, when I see someone who is out of place due to their looks, I quietly say to myself, "There but for the grace of God go I." It gives me pause to reflect about how fortunate I am to be 5'7" and a tad over weight with a bald head and a big nose. So when you see someone who is out of place due to their looks or size you might want to think about something my late Mother would always say. It went, "I used to cry because I had no shoes. Then I met a man who had no feet."

My father has the same disorder, even tho he is not particularly tall because his disease started when he was already adult, he share the same knee and back pain as the taller people. And like your coworker, the week before each injection he is just angry and muddy all the time, but everything come back to normal after each injection. Glad that he lives in a country with universal healthcare because each injection cost half of his salary.

Crazy how the body will fix itself the best it can to survive.
Andre was 7’4” +\~ an inch.
No matter what others say, his French military record stated his height at 7’4”, lol in metric which was one reason why he could not serve his country this way.
At the end of his life, this poor giant had shrunk to around 6’10.5”
Between his knees losing cartilage from surgery, his hips widening, his many herniated disc’s in his back,
his neck cartilage going and his painful arthritis being horrible every day with gravity pulling you down, it is a wonder with all that weight crushing down on him that he did not get smashed down to a tiny 6’4” - 6’7” at his death.
With two illegal drunk drivers smashing into the rear of my car twice, I went from 5’9.75” down to 5’8” now !! Almost 2 inches shorter now, I was only 225lbs. Sadly at 550lbs poor Andre had no chance of beating the odds. Sure miss this guy in the ring !!

Andre’ the Giant is one of the many celebrities I love that sadly died before I was born, but I still wish I could have met.
Freddy Mercury, Andre the Giant, John Candy and Tupac were all very talented and gifted men who died in the 1990s. That was one sad time, because of how much talent died with them, along with their (most likely) good personalities.

Talk about a body that was chronically abused from work and play. Not enough down time

Acromegaly is basically gigantism for adults (in terms of puberty and growing in height, etc., expect you become more wider instead of taller)

Andre was married and had a daughter. It would have been interesting to learn more about that and less about how much beer he could drink.

I'm not so sure that he got married or not but I do know he had a daughter. She displayed some of his memorabilia at a convention awhile back.
