Hi GS! good video on maintenance. I'm from the Netherlands; this is aquarium hobbyist dream country: There is no chlorine in the tapwater here. You can pour tapwater straight into your tank, it makes life easy! Keep up the good work mate.
Hi Vincenzo, chlorine free tap water, that's great👍👍thankyou so much for taking the time to comment and glad you enjoyed the video, very much appreciated😊
Cheers geordie, I thought you might say horizon aquatics after watching all your videos over the last couple of days, I will pop in and have a look around, they might even have a decent aquarium I could pickup, keep scaping pal, cheers and all the best.. Jas
Lol love it. Good tips. You mind me asking you if I have issues with mine ? As I say I'm a new aquarium fish keeper and I just don't want my fish to die or be stressed. Thanks.
Thanks for another great video. I recently got rid of my 5ft cichlid tank due to redecorating. I will be downsizing with my next tank. I have kept fish for 30 years, however, have never used real plant. You have inspired me enough to set up a planted tank when I get my new one. Cheers :)
Thanks a lot for this video.I'm still waiting for my new Rio 450.I also want to run it without CO2 if ever possible. And you reminded me of Jeff, that bloke from Newcastle, whom my wife and I often met in Manila!Keep it up mate!👍
Really excited to see your gallery when it is complete. Really like your clean lines and how you design all the little details for a cohesive display. One of the best channels in my opinion 👌
Your tank is terrific so I wouldn’t dream of carping, but with that fantastic filtration I bet if you tested the water you’d find you didn’t need such big water changes. Although originally from down the road from you I’m now in a part of Spain where it’s bottled water or mostly RO mixed with tap, so less water change the better cost wise. Anyway, love your videos.
Love your videos mate, another very useful insight into what others do with their low techs. Buying a juwel 240 today and you've helped me with a few tips
Beautiful, I wonder what it looks like now? Did you use aqua soil, I was just wondering because I had Malawi cichlids for years with only rock and now I’m just setting up a planted tank with fish that don’t eat plants but I don’t know much about plants. Are there many plants that take nutrients in though their leaves without the need for aqua soil?
Thank you so much Nicki. Sadly this tank was stripped a while ago now, got quite a few setups going on though. There's a really good choice of epiphytes (plants that attach to wood and stone) so you can have those without the soil and they feed via the water column. Here's a link to a short, these are plants that attach to wood and stone. ruclips.net/user/shortsp3hKgCn_Cvk?feature=share

Great video, thank you! Did you keep the original light? It feels very strong and bright and I notice building of algie. It seems it's impossible to change the brightness as it's static. I will have to shorten hours of lighting, hope it helps.
Hi Julia, glad you enjoyed the video, thank you. I did change the light eventually to an app controlled one so I could change intensity according to plant mass. If I don't have a controllable light I go for around 6 hours if I'm not injecting CO2 to help keep algae at bay.
Hi there and thankyou. They're ok but I now use Seachem ferts as per bottle instructions. I follow the seachem weekly dosing routine and prefer to dose everything seperate these days so I have more control of what fert, amounts etc I use.
Hey mate, I've got the same aquarium as you. I don't like the lighting system that comes with it! The lid etc...I've binned it! what is the length of your lighting and where can I get it! Been worried about a light not clipping on correctly! And thanks for this video! My 240L is secondhand so it's getting a make over. The stand had water damage so I've vinyl wrapped it and it looks amazing! In a soft grey! Also I have my external filter in a basin as this helps to catch drips!
Hi there, the lights we're from Amazon and I can't seem to find the right size anymore to add link. The actual lighting units i have measure 116cm with extendable brackets either side. The vinyl wrapped cabinet sounds cool👍
@@GEORDIESCAPER thank you for getting back to me. Ok I'll try find something similar. After taking the stand apart to wrap each section I realised that the water damage to the stand was severe. Like swelling of the bottom pieces as not all the sides are covered with the melomine coating. The back sides are chipboard. For the price of these aquariums there should be extra screws and wooden dowel supports. The wrapping was the best idea. It looks so good! It was the beech effect juwel Rio. Looked orange when I got it. Can't grumble tho, I got it for £30. It even had a bad snail issue... So it's been vinegar washed and razored all the glass... Looks amazing! No more snails! Still going to be a while yet before I set it up! Need to figure out how much substrate I'm gonna need for it and also need a new intake pipe for my external filter as it's not long enough... I'm hoping by the time I'm done it will look better than yours! 🤘🏻🤣🙌🏻 But then again it won't cz I'm opting for no real plants in mine. Golden barbs nibble it!
Smashing vid GS. Thanks for sharing your ‘behind the scenes’ method. I’m a ~60% once a weeker. Seeing your results has prompted me to try an additional ‘water only’ in the week. I have a Biomaster600 too. I note the mixed colours (grades) of foam in your pre-filter. What’s the thinking behind that? (I’ve just stuck with the blue so far)
Thankyou so much, more work but i think the water changes really help. I thought using different grades of sponge may help with flow but to be honest if you're cleaning them weekly anyways probably little effect on flow. I would just stick with the blue.
Thanks for gr8 videos.. I have just bought a similar juwel, I changed the light to spectrum with controller and 1000l pump. The shop bought back the Helialux and pumphead, I got 100eu discount. Can you tell me what types of plants you have? Especially the cryptocoryne variants.
Thankyou so much glad you're enjoying the videos😊👍 Plants: Trident fern Anubias petite and pangalino Bucephalandra (red, wavy green, kedagang) Crypts (wendtii tropica, undulata, balansae crispatula, there's one other but I honestly can't remember which crypt it is).

Hi there and thankyou. The lights are cheap lights from Amazon and have no intensity control but they are only 70w in total. lean fert dosing and 2 water changes a week as well as a good algae eating crew (amano shrimp, nirate snails, otos and Siamese Algae eater) have all helped me keep algae under control. Hope this helps👍
Useful stuff 👍 I just set up my rio 180 today with the wood gravel and soil from Horizon Aquatics. Coppied the pump method too. No way am I doing water changes by bucket on this ahaha 😂
Hello How long into a new set up should I do my first water change? Its a Juwel rio 240 with an Ocean Free Hydra 1500. All readings are good and its been running for 2 weeks. Thanks Steve
I water change every day for the first 2 weeks and gradually bring it down to once a week. I'm a strong believer in regular large water changes. If you're readings are all good a water change won't effect this.
