When I visited Starburn Industries last year I got to see people actually working on puppets and shots for this movie, It was INCREDIBLE to see the amount of detail go into it, and I really can't wait to see the movie in full. I feel like it will change how people view stop motion and animation in general if it's open to wider audiences.
+Vivziepop It's so nuts to see you comment on a video because I follow and admire your work and here you are, showing a dedication and love for animation outside of the work you put into your works. I don't know. It's just comforting because reading this just lets me know that you really have a passion for animation and film and are just as down to earth as you were before you finally got your big break.
I love your art good luck with all your passion projects
The you who wrote this comment would be proud of the you of today Vivs
Didn't expect to see you here, love your work.
Hey Vivzie, love Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss
As an animator, what really struck me the most about this film is something that most people really wouldn't realize, unless they knew about the process of stop motion. It struck me immediately, and so hard, I started getting the feels literally (and unashamed) minutes into the film.
You see the seams in the characters' faces? Their faces actually come off, and their expressions are animated by switching different "face plates". Each plate is moulded by hand, and you can have dozens and dozens of face places for a single character to depict expressions, emotions and phonemes. While it's a very cost-effective and detail-oriented way of doing stop motion animation, there is generally a person tasked with the job of digitally editing out the seams for the face plates in post-production.
The seams in "Anomalisa" -- these cracks in these characters' fragile, emotional masks, in which they show outwardly to the world -- have been purposefully left untouched.
am i the only one who loved the sound design? It just felt so realistic and made the film more personal
feels like a live-action movie
Love it
@@Eliel20117 you feels like a live action movie
I loved it to but i guess the academy didn't
@@Eliel20117 I believe it is
The thing about what Kaufman said is that you can apply that to pretty much every other medium of entertainment, especially for literature.
+Ben and Jery's + Steven That's not necessarily true; a large portion of his reasoning is based on the fact that movies are by far the most costly-to-produce form of mass media. The size of the investment studios and filmmakers have to make means that they are drawn to making the 'safe' choices in presentation.
casualevils Good point. Even though films cost much more time and money than it does to write a book, the problem is that literally ANYBODY can publish a book these days. I do mean anybody, the other day, I literally found minecraft fanfiction for sale at my local bookstore. Basically, writers have to keep writing absolutely crappy books that relate to something popular in order to make a quick few bucks. Thanks to J. K. Rowling effectively destroying standards for good writing, nobody really seems to care about what really makes a book good. I mean, just imagine if any old youtuber could upload his films to be on TV or in theaters.
+Ben and Jery's + Steven What the hell are you doing here? Get back to shit-posting, please.
+Grant Jennings LMAO Holland I love you.
What's wrong with Harry Potter? I mean, it's not perfect, but there's plenty to like, isn't there? I really disliked The Goblet of Fire, but all the other ones were quite good overall.
YOU NEED TO DO THAT MORAL OREL VIDEO! DO IT!
+jeff emerson Even if he just did a short analysis of the character of Clay Puppington I'd be so fucking happy.
ImpendingRiot83 lol
Still waiting
Booston_ I think he’d start it after he finished his Kimba and Lion King 2019 reviews.
It's been 4 years
Adam, I would just like to say thank you. I have been watching your videos for a few years now and you have now become apart of my life. I am currently an aspiring film maker, and all I can say is that you have taught me the meaning of great film making. Your reviews go on to be much more than the trivial crap that most of the RUclips movie community boils down to. Instead of describing the plot to me as if I was a child, taking time to spoil a significant amount of the plot, and then saying weather or not you liked it, you talk about what makes a movie or film maker so great and provide examples of what they have achieved. I can tell you genuinely understand what a movie is and what it can achieve. You put producing quality entertainment in front of financial gain. You seem like one of the few genially intelligent people on this website and I would love to meet you one day if only we didn't live several thousand miles apart. Keep on improving your style and you will achieve greatness without a doubt.
+SHOPPINGTROLLY REBEL just to echo this and say you're spot on. I started donating to Adam very recently after realising I'd learnt more and got more entertainment from his channel than from the rest of youtube combined.
Adam, you're a cool dude; and as someone currently working towards doing something I have a genuine passion for as a day job, you're an inspiration. Keep doing what you're doing, and if you're ever in the north of England I'd be delighted to buy you pie and mash and beer.
+Matthew Barton Couldn't agree more. You can tell from his reviews that he is someone who actually gives
a shit about films, rather than just the people in them. Instead of having a hissy fit when he didn't get what the trailer advertised the movie as, he actually grades the quality of a film ,not overlooking any aspect of the movie making process. There is the occasional movie that I disagree with him on, but usually when he gives a film a ten it deserves that ten, and not just because "I liked it". Not only that, the majority of the editing in his reviews are used to either create or complement a joke. This is a part of a RUclips video where most other content creators don’t even look for a joke, and see editing more as a means to shorten the running time and make it more “professional”. This quality level of channel is dying out fast, the only two channels I can think that compare to YMS is Every Frame a Painting and Channel Criswell. Keep up the great work, Adam.
I also forgot to mention your music in my original comment, it’s fantastic. I listen to it on a daily basis and every time I just love it more and more. Also, what’s happening with it? The last track to show up on your website was over two years ago. I’d just really like to hear some more.
I'm so fucking pissed Inside Out won a Golden Globe over this masterpiece.
+Nari Cake and an Oscar :(
And a BAFTA
Good thing it quickly got cancer and died out... I haven't heard people talk about it in some time!
because inside out is the real masterpiece
Nari Cake
This movie was shit!!
It was about a piece of crap guy who has a SUPER shitty time due to his craze.
Aaaand that's the movie.
I really appreciate that you didn't spoil the movie like every dumb fucking film reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes. Thank you.
*****
10/10. Almost every review was identical when I read the first wave of 10 reviews,
Every review had a plot synopsis, and an interpretation to go along with it.
+TheMythofSissyFuss Why do you use RottenTomatoes to begin with?
+TheMythofSissyFuss Dude there's nothing to spoil except that this movie sucks.
+peter brajkovich hahahahaha
TheMythofSissyFuss
Spoil what? The move sucked.
It didn't get recognized because it was a pointless, lazily written crap movie.
Wow, this film has a 99 on Metacritic right now
+Adventures And Awesome Things It's mostly right, except for butthurt fanboys.
+Adventures And Awesome Things Yeah of course, but with that statement your previous comment makes like no sense:p
+Pathetically.Awesome 91 on Metacritic now. 3 behind Inside Out which is still THE best animated film of 2015. :)
+Darin Michael It' pretty sad that people like you are why Anomalisa won't even win best animated feature.

I bet it will be in your number one spot for 2015 list
Can't wait until we find out in 2018.
Thank god it didn't come out in 2014, that would be a 5 hour video with nothing but Adam debating with himself over which is better.
+John Jimco It's funny because it's true.
+John Jimco I hope I'll still live to see it.
We'll have to wait until 2017 to find out
If I'm counting right, this is possibly the second ever movie featuring a puppet sex scene after Team America.
You’d be surprised how many other movies have featured puppet sex scenes, especially if we’re counting stop motion puppets.
This is probably the most realistic one lol
It's not a movie, but wasn't there a prank call show that featured sock puppets? I swear there was a simulated sex scene on that show. Or maybe it was man show on comedy central.
@@rabd3721 You're thinking of Crank Yankers.
I find myself in one of those predicaments where I want to be an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer.
I'm a selfish person.
+nycsoul17 Welcome to Hollywood.
+nycsoul17 I'm Garth Marenghi. Author. Dreamweaver. Visionary. Plus actor.
+nycsoul17 Except you're not good at any of those things. The fact that you want to be every one of those tells me you probably don't do any of it. Or you're 14.
What it boils down to is this: If you want to do something.. just do it, over and over and over, and pretty soon, you’ll be proficient at it, an expert, a professional.
+Gene Splice You're overanalyzing, man. My comment was simply for cheap laughs. My main passion is for writing. Always has been.
Despite it being a silly comment, I did mean that. I'm pragmatic though and I understand where my strengths lie.
I want to be an astronaut too. Just expressing my unattainable desires.
The next tommy wiseau
Great review Adam. I tweeted to Duke Johnson Congratulating him for the film and he got back to me saying "Thanks. Much appreciated". Such a cool guy.
Dope background music. Very relaxing.
Do you know the name of song?
Ya pls sauce on the title of song.
+MuffinDemons La Rocca Piano One from the Synecdoche OST
Can't find it anywhere :(
Charlie Kaufman + Moral Orel sounds incredibly depressing...I should probably check it out.
Why is there so much hate for this movie. I fucking loved every aspect of it.
I got a chance to meet Duke Johnson and he was so cool and inspiring, especially for a first year in animation like myself! He was even willing to do a Skype call with our class to help us with any questions we had about the industry and how he got started. Not only are these guys great film makers, but the fact that they're so lovely and down to earth is so awesome! :D
Too bad inside out will the oscar
+Lucas Garibaldi What do you mean, "too bad"?
Inside Out was pretty bland and dissapointing in my opinion
Andrew Davis Do tell me, how was it bland? I really want to know. I'm not saying you're not entitled to your opinion, but its such an unorthodox description of inside out.
Seventy Eight
I think it was pretty predictable and aside from Sadness and Joy it had poor character development. The plotline is basically just random stuff like Up and the big dramatic scene is just nostalgia like Toy Story 3. Anomalisa was much more honest and well executed.
Lucas Garibaldi Thats basically sums up everything YMS said about Inside Out, did you even watch the movie yourself? Its nostalgic because its about growing up and dealing with a life changing event. How is it random stuff? It shows the inner workings of a mind and personifies it both hilariously and genuinely, at times it is a little abstract but that is the point. It personifies the mind and gives reasons to why you act a certain way.
Watched it yesterday in Sitges, it made me cry. Synecdoche is my favourite film, so if it's your second favourite, which is your favourite?
The Holy Mountain, directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky
Good one too!
YMS' first place spot is obviously reserved for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
¡Quetzal! Saludos
in b4 holy mountain yms in 2025
Watching this tonight with Charlie Kaufman there for a Q&A. When you said "Synecdoche, New York" is one of your favorites, I got way more hyped to see this. Love that film, and I really look forward to the screening of this movie.
AWW YEA CANT WAIT FOR ALL THESE QUICKIES!
What if I told you that you can like both Anomalisa AND Inside Out?
Yeah, I didn't take out that much from Anomalisa. I really respect the stop motion animation, but it just felt slow for what it was throwing at you. It did well to put you in the guy's shoes and depicted dreams very accurately. I also like the Japanese / Lisa theory, but that's where it ends with me.
@Benjamin Abramowitz WAIT, YOU CAN!!!
The Foley was AMAZING. like, there were scenes where i just sat in awe of the sound design. maybe im a tech geek, but that was the icing on the masterpiece cake
I’m about to buy this on Prime for $5 it’ll be my first time watching it. I’ll be paying specific attention to the sound. Seems like this movie has a lot going for it. Hopefully I’m not setting the expectations too high lol.
Adam gave "I’m thinking of Ending Things" a ten on IMDb. So excited for him to review it
HOW DO YOU LOOK AT RATINGS WTF
zoey search YMS IMDb and you’ll find his page or download this app called Letterboxd and follow "YMSUnofficial" which stores all his IMDb ratings
When will YMS do a review of the holy mountain?
If he did an analysis of the holy mountain I'd die of old age before he'd finish it xD
Tim Olff Probably once hes done with scynectidy new York
We'd get a 20 minute segment that's only about that opening scene
:l never 5 years later
I just realized this movie is the sequel to Synecdoche New York. Only instead of the focus being about how everyone is an individual and has their own story, it shows the counter perspective that everyone is the same.
I wonder if that's what Caden was thinking about right before he died.
watched it yesterday (im binge watching 2015 films for my best of 2015 video) and i fucking loved every second of it. awesome review adam
Just gave it a watch, it was technically very impressive and I am going to have to watch it again in order to grasp the story a little better
Moral Orel is a great show; I feel that shows from adult swim like Moral Orel and Xavier tend to be ignored or forgotten, but then I hear you're making a review for MO and I couldn't be happier. Can't wait for that one.
MarmaladeJacket xavier is my fav adult swim show just a genius narrative
Now out in theatres. I can't wait to see it.
I'm going to watch this in June when it comes out on DVD. I have a certainty that it will be my favourite film of 2015 just because of Kaufman's track record so far.
I just saw this movie today, and came to this YMS post because I had a feeling that all the typically correct things would be said. And boom. Here we are. I don't think any of Kaufman's previous works instilled quite the level of existential crisis in me that Anomalisa did, mostly because I just came out of my sixth LTR and am now wondering why I bother. Three years later, this movie still deserves the acclaim and love that people have for it, even if they cannot seem to love themselves. :)
What's extremely ironic is how much Charlie Kaufman resembles Neil Breen.
YESSSSSS
Goddammit, I don't wanna wait 'til December! HNNNNG I've been following this since its initial kickstarter campaign, it feels like it's been ages!
I just saw this 4 hours ago. It blew me away, and actually reminded me of breathless in terms of it's presentation. I didn't like the ending at first, but as I start to think about, it almost seemed completely perfect. I can't wait to see it again.
very excited to see this. glad you liked it homie
I'd really like to see his opinion on Coraline
HELLLLLLL YEAHHHHH. Also I'm super happy that you loved it, though I have no idea when, if at all, this movie is getting a wide release.
It’s on prime so I guess that’s as wide as it gets. Actually never heard of it until today. It’s on the $5 deals page.
As always, thanks, Adam.
Excited to see this, love Kaufman's work
thanks for the great review!
I saw it in the same theater as you and it was truly one of the most beatifully animated films ive ever seen
So excited for this film.
just saw this yesterday amazing
I think it's telling that you talk about how much you can relate this film to your own life. A lot of the criticisms I've seen for this movie (usually the more shallow ones) seem to ultimately stem from the root cause of not being able to relate to it on a emotional level. I value the ability to connect emotionally pretty highly, and while I have to struggle a bit to see any of my own worldview or emotional experience in this film, I can't deny that it's still a pretty damn great film. I'm not gonna get angry that Inside Out won all the awards or anything, opinions and all that, but this is a special movie, the kind that changes the way I think ABOUT movies. I'm in a place right now where I'm not entirely sure if I should even be bothered with number scores for movies anymore (partially cause of your own videos, thanks), but I'd unquestionably give this a ten if I were.
I can't believe I forgot about the amazingness that is Moral Orel. Thanks for reminding me about it.
wow. What a perfect statement by Kaufman in that interview at around 1:35 (re: "no being fed anything" ) does anyone know where I can find the full interview?
I'm intrigued. Gotta check out his movies.
Have you seen the short, Madame Tutli-Putli? I have no idea how Anomalisa handled the eyes, but MTP handles them in a really cool way. Check it out!
Okay so super excited about this moral orel review
I just watched Anomalisa, and I have no clue how I feel about it. It's the first Kaufman film that I've ever felt so conflicted on.
October 22nd in the year 2017 and Adam has still yet to release his Top 10 Films of 2015. This one is obviously going to be number 1, but come on Adam, I need that video!
If you are too busy with all the balls you're handling simultaneously (pun intended) than let me lend a hand on your balls as aid. Just like James Rolfe of Cinemassacre learned after over working like an addict; hiring editors is the best thing for both your health and your economy. Give your balls to someone you trust and I can assure you that they will be handled well enough. I myself am a perfectionist with my music and screenplays, so I know how you feel.
Your balls may be heavy, but a skilled editor can make it easier for you to relax... (ok, just one more pun)
I love you regardless if you over work your balls from time to time!
Yes!!! My favorite person in the industry knocks another one out of the park! So fucking glad about this, I mean how does the guy keep doing it?
The only Kaufman film I really like is Adaptation., but I'm still really looking forward to Anomalisa. I love animation, and especially works which bring the medium to new heights.
Still waiting for that moral Orel video
yeppppp
I can't wait to see this movie, Being John Malkovich is one of my favorite movies of all-time and stop-motion is inherently impressive to me
So, the screenwriter of two of my favorite films (Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) just dipped his toes into animation and I can't watch it....it's times like this where I wish I lived in Canada.
Just saw it at the CIFF with Kaufman in attendance. It was indeed fantastic
seeing this raised my productivity by 90%
Kaufman looks rad with a beard. I'm really looking forward to this movie!
So are you gonna do an analysis of Anomalisa akin to your analysis of Synecdoche, New York? Cause if so, I CAN'T WAIT.
I'd love to see that Morel Orel video, very underrated show.
We’re still waiting 😞
If only my Regal theater showed this film now. One of my most anticipated films of 2015.
I WANT MORE BBC LIFE STORY PLZZ
Can you do a thoughts on for Anomalisa? It'll be interesting and you could also go into detail about the film and how you feel about Charlie Kaufman's other works
It's really surprising to see a recent film with literally no released footage (The Kickstarter trailer doesn't count). But being a hardcore stop-motion lover, I can't wait to eventually see this film for myself.
+Drawtoonz Studio
Where would you go to see this movie? Is it going to be a major release anytime soon?
Nicole McIntosh Since it is an independent project, I doubt it'll get a major release. As for me seeing it, I'll probably wait until it's avaliable on iTunes or wherever to rent, as I'm not sure if there's any nearby independent theaters showing it where I live.
Will there be anyway to see it? Maybe to buy it as an download on iTunes?
Probably. It'll likely get released to digital platforms such as iTunes and Google Play (in addition to DVD and Blu-Ray) after its run in independent cinemas. Don't quote me on that, but that's usually what happens with these kinds of movies.
Then I'll just have to continue to cross my fingers.
Weirdly enough, I only heard about this film after Adult Swim, of all air times, on Cartoon Network started showing trailers for it. I wanted to see it, but I never got around to it. I heard it's on Netflix, so I'll make it my plan to see it when I have the free time. I've wanted to see it since I first saw the trailer, and after you, IHE, and Ralphthemoviemaker recommended the movie, I'll gladly watch it
This comes out on my birthday in the US but in NY. Ill be in Tennessee at the time though. Guess Ill be seeing it some time January.
Well now I need to see this movie thanks Adam.
When is the 2015 top list coming dude?? I'd love to catch more recommendations of yours so I can add to my movie collection. I wanna watch more indie and foreign films but idk what's good, I just tend to go by your lists
Holy shit, I just realized YMS guy hasn't done a YMS in 6 months. I told , u a long time ago Adam to do more YMS since it is the name of your channel and website.
I haven't seen the movie or anything about it, and I'm already getting emotional just from how powerful you speak xD
why havent you reviewed Adaptation?
I wish I could see what's so great about this movie. I recently watched it and I just wasn't getting into it at all... :/
Moral Orel is fantastic. I'm not surprised you like it, it's just up your alley.
Did you know the guy who made moral oral/robot chickens animation hacked a power glove and used it to help him in stop motion. Pretty cool yo.
I watched Anomalisa thinking it would be like the trailer. It was NOTHING like I expected, so the first third of the movie annoyed me incredibly and I was keeping it in my head "Maybe this guy has schizophrenic depression" and pushed through. the last third of the film is what really salvaged it for me and made it come together.
Hope you do a full review dissection of this movie some parts are really bugging me
I could almost feel you smiling during this review
sweet a yms vid!!!!
Charlie Kaufman is the best writer of all time!! Thanks Adams and keep up the good work!
Couldn't find the background music in the track listing. Any help? Also, brilliant Quickie.
+Adriano La Rocca Piano One from the Synecdoche OST
+Frosted Butts took me a while to realize that was the actually name of the music.
Can you post the link to Kaufman's interview about 'circular problem' that you added in the beginning part of the video??? THANKS
God I love your photo face.
Hear this: Anomalisa premiered this thursday in my country (Perú) and It just been screening in one fucking theater. ONE. And the theather that is screening it is 2 hours from where I live.
I just finished Moral Orel from a binge session about 3 days ago. Please make a video!
Is there any video where you talk about your all time favorite video?
Still haven't gotten that Moral Orel video
Hey Adam, you should watch Embrace Of The Serpent.
I just now learned that it's coming out on the 8th in my area.
I'm hoping you get to see (and hopefully review) the film From Afar (Desde allá in its original language).
what's the background music in this video?
+JetSetDex its one of the piano pieces from synecdoche sorry im not bothered to check which
"Piano One" by Jon Brion
From Synecdoche, New York.
Oh wow, I loved Moral Orel! I want to watch this movie now just because of the people involved in it.
Charlie Kauffman (Kaufman?) isn't someone I'm too familiar with.
Syndoche was amazing, but I can't say I enjoyed it, as it made me feel infinitley depressed.
Death isn't something I like to think deeply about..or at all.. and often have to force myself to Not think about it, especially at night (I'm an insomniac).
And it's not like I cant watch "uncomfortable" movies with strong themes (Some of my favorite movies are The Devils, 120 Days of Sodom, Julien Donkey Boy, The Holy Mountain, Irreversible, Martyrs etc)
it's just that Syndoche made me feel uncomfortable and almost sick in a way that only happens when the subject matter is unexpected and hits you at a certain time in your life and you can't quite explain beyond that.
It's a brilliant movie that I expect will only get more brilliant with repeated viewings when all the layers and complexities I surely missed will emerge, it's just that I watched it at a time in my life that it spoke almost Too directly to me, forcing me to confront things I was (maybe still am) trying hard to avoid.
Anyone who loves any genre of Art might understand where I'm coming from, and if not then perhaps I just suffer from a crippling Insanity.
But, being the only movie I saw from good ol' Charlie, I never watched another one.
I think I'll give this one a chance though. Moral Orel was that good to me lol
I finally got the chance to watch this film today, and I agree with your 10/10 rating completely. It's so unlike anything that I've ever seen before. Charlie Kaufman is quite possibly the only filmmaker putting out anything with substance these days.
I wasn't surprised to see Dino Stamatopoulos on the list of producers.
have you done "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind"? i'd really like to see you deconstruct that one.
+jeremalaria He hasn't done any of the 3 early Kaufman masterpieces. He should do all of them.
He gave it 10/10
What's that backing track throughout your video YMS? It's very nice
I just saw this and it fucking floored me. 10/10
Hey YMS...there was a german movie that came out in the US in 2015 called "phoenix" however it originally came out in 2014, is it (by your standards) a 2014 film or 2015 film?
