Awesome video, my 12 yrs old daughter with brachial plexus palsy does Brazilian jujitsu... best therapy we've found for her because she's super into it... it's not just the same motions all the time. She just got her green belt last week.
I wanna know who the hell looked at either of you and thought "you know what that guy needs? An education on how to effectively murder someone with their hands..." Lol. People like me learn jui jitsu so we may have a fraction of a chance with people like you guys. Love to see this though just recently got involved in lifting and watching you guys been involved in jiu jitsu a lot longer and love seeing the two rwlated
Hey Brian I'm a student, and I'm sure when it comes to your conditions, yourself as well as the doctors you've met with are far more educated than me. But we looked at a sliding hiatal hernia, where a part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm and up into the esophagus. This usually has symptons of constant regurgitation and acid reflux, could be worth something reading up on if the worms treatments don't give you any relief. Regardless, great content and keep it up
Sir:Dead on Video. I have competed in both Judo and Powerlifting and to compete in both you have to cycle one in and the other at least partially out. Another thing that cannot be stated enough is to leave your ego at the door for certain. Thank you for the video and it is great to hear your feeling better.
The way you talk about it being like yoga is a great way to look at things like this. I’m not involved in anything like Jujitsu or combat sports, but I firmly believe that finding something that relaxes you is important for all aspects of life. These video where you’re sharing some of your philosophies (for lack of a better term) are always great, keep it up brother!
Thank you for your insight. I've literally have been struggling with this very same balance problem for like a year now. It's so relieving to hear people who are stronger and further advanced relate to this issue. Thinking about jiu jitsu as an active recovery will hopefully give me the motivation I need to keep going
I just woke up and have the perfect video to multitask/ sit on my throne and begin an awesome day. This type of video is exactly what I have been looking forward to you putting out Brian/Joey, all of both of your content are concise making every second of video worthwhile. Keep killing it🤘
As a Judo guy I’ve been asking for you both to do this video for ages. Very happy Brit here. Everything you say is so true. As someone old than you both I know what you mean about doing what make sense, you then have to give it back to the next generation. Thank you.
Happy 4th Brian and Joey! Thank you for making a grappling video, have been looking forward to this for a long time! Awesome input on a lot of things, I hope to learn more!
I love grappling because it forces me to rewire my brain and stop meeting strength with strength like I do while lifting. My 140 lbs NCO used to mop the floor with me when I weighed 200 lbs, and he always looked almost bored while doing it.
Martial arts are a great addition to resistance training. Shoot, I attribute my mobility 100% to the fact that I have done TKD for 15 years. That’s everyone’s number one surprise in the gym, the fact that I am so mobile 🤘🏼🇺🇸🤘🏼
Trained 5 days a week for 6 years before COVID 19. The gym is still closed due to COVID 19. I miss jiu-jitsu soooo much. I can't wait to get back to Jiu-Jitsu when this pandemic insanity is over...
Hi Brian, Hope you are well mate! Big fan of your channel and your videos. I’m a bjj practitioner who just recently got into lifting weight and have been enjoying it a lot. I currently follow Jim Wendlers 531 method and have been seeing a lot of positive results but would like to move slightly to more specific training for bjj. Hearing more of what you have to say about programming weight training with bjj would be awesome. Thanks
When you're done doing lady grappling you guys should do Catch Wrestling,a man's grapple art. Also yes if you know zero grappling, yes just like any martial art you can get destroyed, even if you can do 400lb+ on all lifts. BUT,if you learn grappling then the muscle strength and grip strength from weights and strongman exercises will help give you the edge over the tiny men.
If you lift and roll the same day which do you prefer to do first. I ask because when faced with the same dilemma I try to roll first because I feel like rolling isn't as predictive and I would have a higher chance of getting injured rolling tired vs lifting tired and I have more control lifting.
Joe Hendershott good idea! I find that if I roll after lifting I’m easier to gas but definitely forces me to focus on technique during the rolling 🤷🏻♂️
Brian! I am a brother of Mr. Baiocchi. I have been training at Masada Tactical for about 2 years now. They have a class called ground fight on Wednesday nights, you and Tony should come check it one night ... hit me up with any questions. Tony has my number...Keep fighting the good fight brotha!
Hi Brian , for a taller guy around 6ft 5 in , which stand up grappling would you reccomend more for a no gi combat situation, judo or wrestling ? Thanks in advance :)
I'd recommend wrestling because it's fairly all encompassing as far as takedowns and ground control, meaning it includes plenty of throws and trips used in judo, other sports, and unique moves. This is great for: developing a general understanding of combat (positioning, aggression, control, reading your opponent, etc.), forming your own style (you can be the guy that gets low and shoots or the guy that stands tall and throws from the clench) unlike certain sports that are so rigid in their rules that you can only do a handful of moves, and carry over to other martial arts. Also with wrestling if you see something from another martial art that you want to add to your repertoire, it's fairly simple to do. For example, you can include finishes from bjj at the end of your takedowns and realistically do that in a fight. Ultimately do whatever you enjoy and is effective for your goals
When running a conjugate program. Would it be best to BJJ on the off days or certain days of the program? I know it depends on the person, but I’m wondering if you ever notice if less injuries happen to the majority if they roll on the ME & DE days or on the off days.
Like I said in the video man, it doesn’t seem to matter if you are doing it correctly. If you want to then go lighter on your ME days and harder or your DE days... But then you were talking about a lot of stress on your ligaments so that might not be a good idea either. Again, it comes down to your style of rolling and how you approach the game. If you’re nothing but a hammer then everything will look like a nail
What belt are you Brian? My gym has a 6 am class twice a week that I go to, and I love it. It's basically involuntary yoga. The morning class is a lot smaller than the evening class (2-16 vs 30-40), there is a lot of 1 on 1 stuff. I actually just got my first stripe about 3 weeks ago.
Brandon Jones he doesn’t have a formal belt. He just learned BJJ through friends that are brown belts so he stated his skill is probably at purple level.
For the uninitiated....... the move Brian pulls off @ 2:43-2:47 (where it looks like they are showing the footage backwards) is why I, a Judo Brown Belt & experienced Submission Wrestler, would NEVER want to screw with Him !!!! I did BJJ for 6 years on and off. In the last two years I’ve been focusing more on strength training and took a break from grappling. In the last month I’ve been doing crossfit with my wife. She enjoys that style of training. I’d love to get back into grappling and keep learning, but keeping both memberships while finding the time is a daunting task. Main reason I switched training focuses because we moved and there are no MMA/BJJ gyms in the area. My old gym is about 45 minutes away.
Man this convinces more that you need to be on Jocko Willink's podcast! That podcast would so intense and informative. Man I hope you all can one day get together and colaborate!
Man, love that you put this out there. Still want to head up sometime and do some onsite build out of equipment. Hopefully, we can get in some mat time as well. -David
Guys i start to feel the love for jiu jitsu and i wanna learn it but i don’t have any jiu jitsu gym near my area can i learn it somewhere online, give me ur suggestions
It's definitely better to learn in a class with instructors and partners as theyll be able to give you advice/pointers on what you can improve on. If there's no gym you could try something like judo, it's grappling with more of a focus on throws/takedowns but a good gym will include some ground work as well just not as much as BJJ. If you have your heart set on doing online learning bjj then check out rener gracie him and his brother do online courses.
Maybe try to find some other kind of gym to learn a type of grappling in. Judo, wrestling clubs, catch, shooto, whatever. For example, you could walk into a judo gym and find out if they train a lot of Newazza (which is ground work basically), which puts you in a place to "roll" like you will in a JiuJitsu gym (you will learn a lot of similar or same techniques...it's all grappling). I think ya gotta really get a feel for grappling in person, and paired with your time put towards judo, wrestling or whatever you find, along with studying virtually, you'll have a decent base of experience that could accelerate your jiujitsu-specific training when you find a Jiu-Jitsu gym. It's all grappling man, and in my personal opinion, good grapplers have elements of all sorts of games, not just the technique set and style of application they pick up from where they train. Grappling is always evolving and cycling. A lot of concepts you will find have been being trained simultaneously and separately across the world within different grappling martial arts for a long time. A lot of it came from the same place in history or has concurrently been around forever. All that to say: Try to find some kind of gym that gives you a chance to learn and actively grapple, be mentally conscious that you are learning elements of grappling - even if it's not the big picture or the specific aspects of Jiu-Jitsu that you want, it will help. Studying online is going to be most useful if you have the opportunity to practice/develop/learn more in person with other grapplers. PS, don't let a specific style, fight philosophy, or martial art become your rigid identity, everything can tie together nicely and you need an open mind, humbleness, and a lot of mat hours to build yourself into a solid grappler. Best of luck man! Grappling has been a good thing in my life and I hope you get a positive opportunity to enjoy as well!
Even knowing about your MMA past I kinda subconsciously thought that you were a ready-to-go-all-out kind of competitor. Damn it sounds like an idea that comes off from a young young dumb dumb white belt, man. You're wise, loved this tip, I just should apply this more often. (still scary thinking about you squeezing somebody's wrist with those paws)
As someone who started BJJ about 6 months ago and hasn't been able to go as often as wanted due to work (and life), what you said about having "zero chance" on the ground against someone who's trained was *IMMEDIATELY* evident. Your false sense of security gets exposed and blown up during your first session. Jiu-Jitsu is awesome.
Hey Brian, I know this isnt related but I know you're pretty active on your newest videos. Check out a recent video by a DairylandStrength. He came up with an awesome warmup that I think you and the team can use for your squats using bands. Thought you might find it useful
Hey Brian! I was doing power lifting and conditioning training for a few years now, and Ipicked up bjj about 5 months ago, and it sucked me in 100% immediately. I feel a lot healthier since and look a lot better even (was not out of shape by any means) however my top lifts on the big exercises dropped a bit. I grapple 3 times a week and try to lift at least as much while swinging some kettlebells after work if I don't have the time. Is it normal that I lost some strength or have I messed up something?
Q&A for y’all, how has your mentality and attitude changed from the beginning to now because of lifting or training? I ask this because I’m older than you and I totally relate to what you say but I know my 20something self would have never understood some of what you say.
This is a good topic. I found that gym strength and grappling strength are not the same. I would get strangled by smaller guys but could out scramble and control guys i knew were stronger in the gym. Now when I do sub wrestling I switch to a barbell circuit a couple times a week. I loose some strength but heavy weight training + grappling was too much for me
Brian! I’ve been a fan from back when you were just starting out, prior to your collab with Alan. Been a silent follower for years but love that you’re into grappling too loved this video!!!
I have been doing you jitsu for 8 months and my lifts are going down. I don't know what to do or what program to run now to keep making gains. I desperately want to keep lifting. The most I got my squat to was 275 and now 250 feels hard at for me, same with my deadlift bench and ohp.
I get what you re saying, but I love lifting and grappling. So how often would you recommend to lift weights per week. (I train grappling 3 times a week)
It depends on your priorities. I try to handle lifting and swimming. So I did swimming mondays and fridays and hit the gym tuesday to thursday. At the moment swimming is paused, but from september on I plan on 3 times swimming and 2 times lifting. I'm 43, so I need my recovery time.
I'm coming from a throwing back ground. I am 106kg at 172cm and I was not fat. I would love to get into jujitsu, drop some weight and better conditioned. Would also like to complete an iron man too. A lot of things on my bucket list.
I play rugby 3 times a week (Tuesday, Thursday and sometimes Friday) and I'm also getting into powerlifting anybody got any tips on how to balance this?
Eat way more food, adding blueberries to protein shakes keeps inflammatory responses down, use a giant massager, and if there's a hot tub or pool use it
Didn't Brian mention a while ago that he and a fighter friend of his would drop some knowledge on programming specifically for fighters? Or at least how strength translates to fighting itself.
I was going to man but the vid I put out about BJJ did worse than any in 2018...it hurts my earnings if I put something out people don’t watch so I have been kind of holding off. If people would watch it, I’d make it
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial Appreciate the time you took to reply, brother. I see... Pretty odd since it seems that everyone and their mother-in-law is getting into BJJ nowadays. Guess it's still pretty niche to cover strength training AND martial arts. Still weird. Oh well, what can we do... Then I guess I'll just have to purchase a customized program in a near future ;) Been tinkering with some programming thoughts, but I need to pick your brain on them. Keep up the solid work of true integrity.
I was shocked as well man but this video’s performance alone tell who my audience is. It honestly hurts my soul that people who watch me don’t care about being dangerous. But I can’t make people’s minds up for them
when a man who throws around 800 lbs of barbells has you in a choke-hold

I have been doing you jitsu for 8 months and my lifts are going down. I don't know what to do or what program to run now to keep making gains. I desperately want to keep lifting. The most I got my squat to was 275 and now 250 feels hard at for me, same with my deadlift bench and ohp.
EAT MORE.
1:29 been there too, it sucks.
👍💪😀
First
I get what you re saying, but I love lifting and grappling.
106kg at 172? Yeah you were fat
Then I guess I'll just have to purchase a customized program in a near future ;)
Been tinkering with some programming thoughts, but I need to pick your brain on them.
Keep up the solid work of true integrity.
I was shocked as well man but this video’s performance alone tell who my audience is. It honestly hurts my soul that people who watch me don’t care about being dangerous. But I can’t make people’s minds up for them
