I have often wondered about the mindset of "successful" people in various endeavors. In this instance, we see the weakness of someone's statement from a successful, professional athlete so how can we reconcile this seemingly incongruity? One possible answer is that the deep drive and desire in many of these people stem from the very fact of a perceived deficiency, inadequacy or weakness on one's life. The drive for success in one particular area may be to mask or overcome a deep inadequacy in another area, that it to say, a way to compensate. I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing per se, since using one's weakness as a means of strength is not necessarily a bad thing, but I wonder on the effect of not really dealing with the underlying cause in the first place.

I’ve noticed also that the language used by those who feel victimised can include “I have always” as well as “I have never”. In both cases it’s a means to do a non-specific blanket covering, rather than to meet something head-on.

This analysis has missed one, if not the most important fact. The fact that Mr. Sanchez was told what to say by his advisers, lawyers or whoever. What if he simply wanted to say "I did not take PED" but the Team, the Advertising-partners and Lawyers decided that a press conference had to be longer than just one sentence? How does this affect the validity of his statements? Are these still his at all?

  • @MsDripCoffee

Yep, it is like having done PED's believing everyone else did them or due to pressure directly (such as coach/trainer) or less directly (fear of losing status or disappointing a relationship partner).

“It’s deeply frustrating that I’m having to make an announcement on this subject,” he wrote. “I am a clean athlete who has never broken the rules in regards to substances, methods or dosages and it is upsetting that some parts of the media, despite the clear facts, continue to try to associate me with allegations of drug misuse.”
Hmmm.......Now I am reading this in a different light.

Taking on celebrity and famous cases is important in my view.
People should not get away or benefit from dishonesty especially in the public eye. This sets an example which people will follow.

I'm a corp counsel overseeing compliance, and what I've learned from managing many investigations is that subjects who are not guilty always demonstrate 2 specific behaviors when called to interrogation/ interview: (1) they immediately ask why they're being questioned and want to know "what's this about," and (2) upon learning the answer to #1, they state a direct, explicit denial of the violation and they maintain this denial for the duration of the investigation. Also, those who are not guilty tend to exhibit frustration about the situation. They don't rant or deny allegations that nobody's made. However, they do sometimes attempt persuasion to clear their name, e.g., by saying, "I've never had a compliance violation" or "I have a clean record." I seem to recall you saying such statements were a red flag, but they aren't correlated with guilt in my experience and in fact I hear them most often from subjects who are not guilty.
