    Actually the origin of the term Bridge is an interesting one too. Early ocean going paddle steamers had a bridge connecting their Port and Starboard paddle wheel housings and this became a useful place to command the ship from, hence the bridge.

    Actually it still has scatilogical orgins. The Puppis is the "Rear End" of the ship. Like anything living thats where the poop comes out. So the scatology of the term is still in play. The ships ass end, = poop deck.

    I speak spanish. Spanish is a direct descendant of latin. Or a modern form of latin if you will. Here we say 'popa'. All this years I secretely knew poop deck could not possibly be for poop, but part of me wanted to think that anglosaxons use to poop in the popa. I still do.

      They would go to the head of the ship, were one would find the figurehead. Yep, the latrine was outside.

    • @dvdb47
      @dvdb47 Год назад +3

      In the days of sailing ships, most ships sailed with the wind (in the same direction the wind was blowing). This made the “head” of the ship the best place to use as a latrine because the wind blew the smell on ahead of the ship, so the sailors had their “seat of ease” there where they could drop their excreta directly into the waves. (Maybe in rough weather they also got some bidet action.) The toilet on a ship or boat is still called “the head” and sailors still speak of “going to the head.”

    In modern standard French the word has not changed: it's still "poupe" (stern) pronounced "poop". In Italien "poppa", in Spanish "popa", in Portuguese "popa", in Romanian "pupa". So yes, it's definitely from Latin origin and for English language, through French.

    • @lukeportelli2097
      @lukeportelli2097 2 года назад

      We Maltese also call the stern of the boat "poppa" while the bow is called "pruwa". On a side note, the word "pupa" means "doll".

      I remember watching a few episodes of a TV show several years that was filmed aboard an old wooden sailing ship. The ship had a pair of what amounted to outhouse seats built into the rails along the sides so the crew could relieve themselves overboard when the need arose. As I remember they were towards the rear of the ship, though not up on the poop deck. The ship had a marine toilet fitted later so the old seats aren't used anymore, but they're original to the ship so they're still there.

    Interestingly the 4th funnel of Titanic was a dummy and actually contained the dog kennels so giving a whole new meaning to "poop deck " And on motor ships exhaust was discharged up the mast so often funnels were for aesthetic purposes The Danes built motor ships in the 1920's without funnels but ship owners did not like them so they started to fit cosmetic funnels Harland & Wolff built 2 large motor liners propelled by 30000 h p diesels in the late 1920's -they werevtge largest motor ships in the world at that time They had 2 squat funnels but exhaust gases were discharged through an exhaust pipe .

    I'm quite happy to always find out our shared language (US & UK) is derived from Latin. I once had to battle someone that decided English is in fact a Germanic language 🤦‍♂ The guy was literally a Nazi academic. I wonder how many languages are as sturdy and receptive as English, since many words have been absorbed over time, from other languages. I would like to think this is the real reason it is the language spoken in most places. Right, I have to go. I am dying for a Stern.

    • @milanmaletic3997

      English is not directly derived from Latin. It adopted a lot of Latin words, as did most other European languages. English is a horrible mixture of everything. A result of conquest upon conquest, with every new conqueror bringing something of their own. It has Latin, Germanic (not German that currently exists, the grandfather of the modern dialects), even Scandinavian elements.
