This guy has it all. Technique, feel, knowledge of theory, respect for innovators, and an articulate speaker. I'm glad to have discovered him in my formative years 25 years ago. Much respect to Paul.Just staggering.
i used to go to this guitar center everyweekend, and as soon as i move away Paul Gilbert, my inspiration for starting to play guitar shows up. my luck sucks
while all the other kids were outside playing paul gilbert was inside practicing his guitar hoping one day when he grows up to be famous, look what happened :)
He falls into the same trap as most guitarist that spent their younger years competing to become the fastest guitarists... They lose the music and simply can't help themselves from going from where they should be to get the feeling of the song into 10x the speed of the scale/box they're in, completely cutting off the string to the musical properties of the song. :(
Not to take away from Paul"s playing, he is amazing. But this isn"t even close to Robin"s soulful, subtle phrasing on his live album from around 76 or77. Don"t believe me? It"s on RUclips, check it out.
@1337Noobtuber That's his signature flange pedal. It has a crazy mode that imitates a dive bomb. There's a video where he talks about it somewhere. I think it's called Airplane Flange?
maybe it is already here, but that is how Paul Gilbert says he came up with the guitar. He flipped an "ice" in photoshop and liked it... did a cutaway and that was the result
My sentiments exactly. When I first heard Gary Moore I was like, WTF! Bonamosso, or whatever his name is, I just don't get it. I ended up here from listening to a rare blues album just posted, Shuckin' Stuff, with the opening track being by John Little John. Checked out his stuff and he did a version of Rocking and Rolling. But the original came out in 1951. Wanted to see other versions of the song and BB King is one of the best. I imagine purists would complain it should be unplugged like the original.
+giancarlo sfocopoco paul gilbert has come to really appreciate old feel and emotion in classic blues the last few years and respects those kinds of guitarists, but at his core he is a shred player, and most of the time, shred licks are what HE feels so he plays it his way and its a great take tbh. i love everything he does.
Oh, standard retort when someone points out something obvious but apparently offends some fans.Paul Gilbert is obviously an awesome guitarist but when you play a slow 12-bar blues and mix it up with legato/speed-picking you ruin the feeling of the song. I mean, you can hear he CAN play with feeling and all the bluesy stuff. The point is that he can't help himself going into lightspeed-mode every now and then. Search for Guthrie Govan Professor Shred #1 and listen to what he's saying.
Not bad. The Muddy phrase doesn't work for you. Nor does the Pee Wee / Grimly haircut. Oh . . . and it's "ROLL me like a wagon wheel." Keep working, Paul. The line I shoot don't ever miss . . .
Because Gilbert is as good as he is, I guess he just can't help himself from shredding at times, but shredding in a standard blues song isn't all that impressive, it simply comes across as over-playing or just throwing in a bunch of notes that really don't need to be there simply because you can..
Paul must be good he taught buckethead lessons for short time until buckethead came back playing lessons paul gave him with both left and right hands.lmao! It pissed paul off, No idea.. Blues is for beginners learning shit, now its for misguided people that like 'Slosh GnR campfires one girlfriend a beer buzz Slosh's digested baked beens.. Pauls is good at giving instrutionals and guitar seminars.. Rated triple x from racer x some very hard shit to play colorful melodic like excalibur in 84
This guy obviously can rip on a guitar, however, this playing doesn't have any emotion or soul. Just technical wizardry. Can't feel it. Somethings missing, perhaps charisma ? Whatever it is he doesn't have it.
I don't think it's a Whammy Pedal. I think it's his signature Airplane Flanger, on the Crazy Flange setting. Paul keeps saying in various gear tours and whatnot that he uses that setting as somewhat of a substitute whammy bar (since his guitar doesn't have one).
Hmmm, what is that guitar he is playing? Its like a strat les paul hybrid ,not the shape but the single coils and tune o matic style bridge. The shape is awesome too but really secondary to what sparked my imagination.
This guy has it all. Technique, feel, knowledge of theory, respect for innovators, and an articulate speaker. I'm glad to have discovered him in my formative years 25 years ago. Much respect to Paul.Just staggering.
Paul is monster speed player, AS FAR AS FEELING TROWER BLOWS HIM AWAY ON ROCK ME BABY!
Feeling is interpreted differently by everyone.
dudes sense of rhythm is SICK!!!
Paul you are the coolest cat I've ever seen in my life. Only somebody cool like you would do a classic like this. Rock on bro!
He is good for all genres, metal, rock, pop, blues, even if jazz !!
i used to go to this guitar center everyweekend, and as soon as i move away Paul Gilbert, my inspiration for starting to play guitar shows up. my luck sucks
Robin's vibrato is sublime, choice of notes and phrasing is so soulful. Go listen to the winterland 1975 concert and you'll so dig it.
while all the other kids were outside playing paul gilbert was inside practicing his guitar hoping one day when he grows up to be famous, look what happened :)
Absolutely brilliant Paul.
it doesn't get any better than this, great guitar player, no ego just talent rock on Paul !
Wow awesome that was great
He hit a harmonic and then floored the Whammy Pedal. How fuckin sweet is that?!
Where's the Love for BB king guys!!?? 🎸😎
I think Paul can control his guitar with his mind, small feat for a god in any case.
I was there - thanks for posting! Thumbs up!
He makes it look so easy!
I was at this clinic. I was in the front row. Glad you recorded this!!
this is one of the reasons I love instrumental guitarists, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai!
8 people don't get it! Paul is awesome!
That boy can play guitar ;)
He falls into the same trap as most guitarist that spent their younger years competing to become the fastest guitarists... They lose the music and simply can't help themselves from going from where they should be to get the feeling of the song into 10x the speed of the scale/box they're in, completely cutting off the string to the musical properties of the song. :(
fuck he is so damn good!!!!
Paolo Gilberto is a God! For God's sake!
I like the personal flavor he put on it.
@dionisiuskristal That is an effect that the Ibanez Airplane Flanger can do. It is Paul's signature flanger, basically.
Awesome
Not to take away from Paul"s playing, he is amazing. But this isn"t even close to Robin"s soulful, subtle phrasing on his live album from around 76 or77. Don"t believe me? It"s on RUclips, check it out.
Bobby T. It’s s cover could Hendrix Clapton etc ever of play any of Gilbert’s stuff ? No chance
6:29 OoO AWESOME!
Nothing like Trower.
@1337Noobtuber That's his signature flange pedal. It has a crazy mode that imitates a dive bomb. There's a video where he talks about it somewhere. I think it's called Airplane Flange?
Turn this up, bring on the women and whiskey! :)
Please check out Johnny Winters Pristine version of this song-from his CD *STILL ALIVE AND WELL**
lol i listened to hendrix playing rock me baby and then came onto this. Lol a comedown
@MrNapalm138
Ibanez Fireman. its his signature series with Ibanez
its not a whammy its the paul gilbert Airplane Flanger AF2 pedal. look up the name in youtube its very cool!!
maybe it is already here, but that is how Paul Gilbert says he came up with the guitar. He flipped an "ice" in photoshop and liked it... did a cutaway and that was the result
Sometimes speed and technique are killing the soul of the Blues.
Please listen to BB KING version , feeling is here and REAL !
My sentiments exactly. When I first heard Gary Moore I was like, WTF! Bonamosso, or whatever his name is, I just don't get it. 3:33??? Mr. Paul Gilbert is da man
Paupaul
I think he used a pitch shifting pedal at the same time he raised his arm the pitch went up. Cool move in any case.
aaaaaaaaaa pablo Gilberto
My school
@dvlORangl Whammy pedal while hitting the high B harmonic on the 19th.
@pfarina Yeah he had a bit of a cold that night. Still awesome though.
06:40 till finish he is insane :D
ummm dude he has got loads on here... of late one of the most prolific i feel. have a look for them
3:35 he's using a pedal, you can see his leg lift up to use it.
That's the airplane flanger his signature pedal it makes that crazy whammy like sound you hear.
I think he sound good. Wasn't even aware he started getting into blues.
robin trower ????
is it john myung on bass?!?! :O
what did he do at 6:05 ???
I like Gilbert but blues is another thing, a good technique isn't enough.
+giancarlo sfocopoco watch that blues with billy sheehan and you will shut up.
You're right
"if u bend a string without making faces, it's like you're eating something without tasting it"
Shredder trying to play the blues
It's funny as shit
What happened at 3:34?
Now I feel bad for not making string bendy faces :(
He is The One person who can play Level Asian without being asian.
He ain't no James Dewar.
@1337Noobtuber ibanez - air plane flanger
TECH GOOD BUT MISSING THE FEEL
@remyhansen no, unfortunately, he didn't. he did all covers, which was somewhat disappointing. but still, Paul can play anything and make it awesome.
Ouch !!!
This vibrato at 0.40sec to 0.42sec.
Jodeeer, pero cómo coño lo hace? No lo entiendo, este hombre es un puto dios.
Cásate conmigo ya, joder.
@someguitarphreak It's possible God with a cold???
3:55 sounds like mike landau
@guisantenuclear He was probably faking it to make us mortals feel better about ourselves.
I didn't know he could bend notes . There is a guy named Ben Notes ,i don't know no Ben Notes
I think he's using a compressor
I can't play this well, makes me feel good trying to though, haha
paul is the best but thats not how robin trower plays ..there that EGO GET AWAY FROM HIM AGAIN
The best version still jimi Hendrix stile!
love you're playing Paul , don't sing
He was ill on that day.
Oh, standard retort when someone points out something obvious but apparently offends some fans.Paul Gilbert is obviously an awesome guitarist but when you play a slow 12-bar blues and mix it up with legato/speed-picking you ruin the feeling of the song. Poor guy, you're B.B king, keep trying !
Not bad.
The Muddy phrase doesn't work for you.
Nor does the Pee Wee / Grimly haircut.
Oh . . . and it's "ROLL me like a wagon wheel."
Keep working, Paul.
The line I shoot don't ever miss . . .
Faster than Jimi but boring if you ask me even though it's impressive - watch Jimi playing this and it's so much more entertaining

He's a great guitarist...I only wish that he'd play a Les Paul or Stratocaster instead of that goofy lookin' one.
Too artificial .. Not blues
he sounds like he's with the flu haha
Eh... Hendrix wins
Paul must be good he taught buckethead lessons for short time until buckethead came back playing lessons paul gave him with both left and right hands.lmao! It pissed paul off, No idea.. Johnny Winter Rock me baby from the Still alive and well album, say no more!!!!
Yes, Johnnys Version is the ultimate , love it
pauls such a student of the intrument, i love when technical players pay tribute to blues guys eapecially robin trower who is an absolute legend
This guy obviously can rip on a guitar, however, this playing doesn't have any emotion or soul. Just technical wizardry. Can't feel it. Somethings missing, perhaps charisma ? Whatever it is he doesn't have it.
Johnny Winter is the one that owned this song...best playing ever, Paul has his moments on this, can't take that from him.
paul gilbert has a great sense of humour and no ego,hes one of the best rock guitarists ever and a really nice guy.
cool paul, cool!!!
La version de Winter es increíble, pero este tipo te tira con todo lo que puedas saber de guitarra y mas.... un disparate....
how does he bend that note at 3:36 when his hand isnt even on the fret!?
This man can play!!!
Not a good version at all.
I don't think it's a Whammy Pedal. I think it's his signature Airplane Flanger, on the Crazy Flange setting. Paul keeps saying in various gear tours and whatnot that he uses that setting as somewhat of a substitute whammy bar (since his guitar doesn't have one).
I love watching Paul Gilbert play the blues....
Your the man Paul
Hey There! Great Vids!
Did he play Fuzz Universe as well?
Best,
Remy
The kids at guitar center wear hot topic t shirts, cool i guess, they can be a lil guitarted
Hmmm, what is that guitar he is playing? Its like a strat les paul hybrid ,not the shape but the single coils and tune o matic style bridge. The shape is awesome too but really secondary to what sparked my imagination.
There's good, real good, great... and then there's oh f** what the F!!! Makes that guitar his woman, and at 6:06 she is screamin!!
omg relly?
its funny cuz the ibanez ice looks so alike this one
only backwards :P
Why did nobody clap after his solo? Jeeesh, can't understand it.
