Thank you for providing a video that compares these two books, a topic that was a little hard to find. I embarrassed to say I actually had both of these books on kindle, and I’ve never really read either one of them! However, in the winter of 2022, early 2023, there is a movie starring Mark Manson about the story in his book. So my entry point was actually the movie, partly because I wondered how the heck could you make a movie out of a book like this. From this viewpoint, I actually found the mark Manson ideas, important and influential and helpful, even though they are of course, things that a person sort of already knows. Thank you for your review and I would like to cycle back and read the Sarah knight book now.

I read (actually, I DNF'd) Sarah Knight's book after reading Marie Kondo's self-help book. Like you mention, Sarah Knight's route to self improvement focused on unrelateable things, or unrealistic ways to live a more enjoyable life. It felt to me like she was saying to focus on the negative parts of life to see what it is about life you like - and that has never worked out for me. I am much more convinced by Marie Kondo's way of decluttering physical objects to bring more joy into your life - because her technique of decluttering focuses on things you want to keep, rather on the things you feel like you need to get rid of. This may seem like it's similiar to Sarah Knight's message, but it definitely feels different (the tone of each author certainly has something to do with that). And surprisingly Marie Kondo makes a lot of soulful and philosophical references to happiness and joy while telling you how to clean out your bookshelves and closets and etc. I would be really interested in knowing your thoughts about Marie Kondo's book if you ever decide to read it. And your analysis of Mark Manson's book has me interested, I think I will check it out!

I'm actually more interested in reading Marie Kondo's book after reading Knights book, since she spoke about it so endearingly. I find it so fascinating how a book about cleaning has inspired so many people!
If you really disliked Knight's tone I'm not sure how you'll feel about Manson's they both have that irreverent tone although Manson is a little more hopeful.

@@LucieReads LucieReads I'm still fascinated by the fact that I was and am so inspired by it - it was definitely unexpected. 😀 And I will keep that in mind about Manson's book; maybe his slightly more hopeful message will keep me interested.

Great reviews! I've always been interested in these two books but avoided them because I wasn't sure if they were popular because of their sensational titles or because they actually had value. I think the idea of realigning your values sounds more helpful but I don't think I could get past the author's condescending voice.

I’ve only ever read the white book and it helped quite a bit but I agree that it doesn’t go too deep to teach you how to stop feeling guilty. But i love the fuck budget.
I loved the examples you mentioned in the orange book and I was getting excited to give the book a go but after what you said about him being that guy™️ I just don’t think it’s worth it anymore lol. I don’t like condescending humans.
    Thank you for this review!
