- This week, we take off the strings, adjust the action, polish the frets, and clean the fretboard. Next week, we will restring it, and record some samples with a microphone and the direct line out from the pickup system.

Thanks for posting. I've been playing my APX600 for several years, and finally sanded down the bridge to lower the action after seeing this and other reviews indicating action too high. I took a little more off than you indicated in your video. No problems w/ buzzing. Wish I had done this 2 years ago! Also, nice trick for loosing the strings and sliding the bridge out underneath ... wish I had thought of that.
Just bought one, the action was great for slide as the action was high, truss rod fix, lighter strings after sanding the saddle.
HI I agree about the stone age bridge adjustment issue BUT the reason why it is still in use is that it is very good for sound transfer (lousy for adjustment). Changing out the nut is a bigger deal than you might think. That said having the proper string height off the nut (measured between the string and fret at the first fret) will give the excellent action Tusk does sell specific nuts widths and string spacing. Tusk is sort of a space age man made material that competes with bone but you still have to sand the botton for string height. Have fun.
Thanks for this. Am going to make some of the same changes. Any ideas for good replacement saddles? BTW I think the great lemon oil debate is that we should never use pure lemon oil but we can always use the diluted lemon oil that is everywhere in guitar stores, etc. Think the Dunlop one you have is safe for all unfinished fretboards...
looking forward to the next video!
Good guitar
can't wait!
I have an APX 500 iii. I have been thinking of buying another guitar for my gigs. Is there a much difference between the APX 500 iii and APX 600?
I'm thinking about buying a new saddle. Keeping the original.or a few of them. The e string closest to my face on this apx600 is 1/4 inch high
That's a good idea.
So, I'm on the fence. Wanted to get the APX600 because it was said by some that the action was nice and low, but now I'm hearing that it's actually too high. Which is itttttt?
Honestly, I don't think it's that low out of the box. But I'd say it's average for the price range. If you want low action in this price range, you need to do it yourself or have someone do it, and it can only go so low. Best advice is go to Sam Ash or Guitar Center and play one and see, if possible.
@@user-eu3mn6ss5lWhere I live the music stores are not that well stocked, so I cannot try out this Yamaha. Also looking at an Ibanez AEWC, which i have the ability to try out. I will go there on Friday and see what's up.
Is the bridge piece that you removed made out of the same material as the nut? Is it different?
I can't say I'm 100% sure, but it seemed similar. It's some type of hard plastic. An upgrade would be to move to bone for the nut and the saddle. That might be a future video at some point!
Yikes! Like in video 1, far too much threatening the guitar with tools, like the cutters when you dropped them near the guitar near the beginning of the video, and then setting the guitar down on the removed strings. Please, please, protect my heart strings and be a bit more careful, OK, a LOT more careful, with the instrument - though it does appear no guitars were injured in the making of the video. 😊Otherwise, I'm enjoying the heck out of this series and always love your setup videos. I'm considering buying one of these APX600's just as a lab instrument to go all-in on a setup before touching my other guitars.
Sorry for the scare! Yup, I'd agree that I'm not super careful when it comes to sub-$500 guitars. I'm basically a rock and roll kid who never grew up. But I agree that if I'm going to be doing setup videos, it'd be good for me to remember best practices.
Best practice is relative. I have clean guitars from $100-$2k+ and If I sold any one of them, I probably wouldn't get what I paid let alone new cost. When I realized that and stopped being so precious about them, I found a level of joy that I never knew before. Way more fun to relax a bit. ✌🏻
