very happy with my viltrox 85 mark II. Compared to my other sony lenses- 16-35 and 24-105 f4, the images SOOC (including the raws) have much more saturation and contrast. Is this a prime lens thing, a viltrox thing, or something else going on? And thanks for your reviews- always watching the sony reviews!
Hey Dustin. Do you believe their claim that the elements itself are identical? Only hood and shell should be different according to Viltrox. But aperture blades seem worse, from what Ive seen.
Thanks for the review, Dustin ! Just got my copy today. I am a bit surprised with the sound the aperture blades are generating. Maybe you mentioned it, but I am not sure. Did you experience the same thing ? Thank you !
Thank you, Dustin, for this great review. I am in the market looking for an 85mm in a tight budget. After seeing this review I am quite eager to buy it. I just wanted to know if this had any weather sealing at the back or in the body of the lens. I shoot in environments where it is dusty.
Dustin, really appreciate all the time and work you put into these videos, excellent job, I’m a recent subscriber. One question since you’ve spent a lot of time with this Viltrox and the Samyang 85mm 1.4: After reading through and listening to your reviews, you seem to prefer the Samyang to the Viltrox, although possibly not by a substantial amount? If this is true, can you explain what you prefer? I’m trying to decide between the 2 for my next lens purchase. I’m asking about the Mk2 version obviously….thank you again, great content.
I do prefer the extra creative control offered by the larger aperture, for one, and the Samyang really isn't much bigger or heavier, so it seems like relatively little hit to move to it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the reply, and great advice. I was set on the Samyang and then I read so many bad reviews on the 85mm Sony i was rethinking it. Mostly seemed to be with focusing issues, and inconsistencies from one lens to the next even in the same size. Another popular review said he had the lens disconnect from his camera, which seems to be a common complaint on top of the focusing issues. The Viltrox seems to get pretty good reviews across the board. Biggest Problem with these 3rd party lenses is reliability, it seems. My problem is if I have a paying job, and the lens goes down, I have other lenses I can use obviously, but $400-$600 isn’t chum change either way, so you kinda want and need the lens to work, at least 90% of the time. Thanks again, your reviews are so detailed, you’ve really got a great format here. Cheers 👍
do you recommend this for aps-c? or would it be a bit tight? i currently only have sigma 30 1.4 and i'm looking to get something with a bit more reach. i am also looking at Sony E 18-105mm f/4 G and i like the focal range, but it lacks sharpness compared to prime lenses. they are the same price (around $400, but viltrox is brand new and the other one is used). what do you think? or do you have a suggestion for something else that is under $400.
I have no reason to believe that to be the case. The dimensions and weight are a bit different, though the optical formula has the same amount of elements. I'm not aware of any relationship between the two companies, though.
Hi @Dustin . Regarding almost same price level - regarding bokeh, colors and IQ, do you reccomend more Viltrox 85 mark II or Samyang/Rokinon 75 ? Im really curious about your opinion.
I have the Mark I and I love it. Some little peeves here and there but it works just as well as my other lenses besides some focus hunting but it was mostly fixed in the firmware a few months ago. I actually got it because I prefer the bokeh over the Sony lens. Sony’s was too cats eye for me I’m not a professional though, just a tech and photography nerd/hobbiest. So pinch salt on this reply ;)
They are both the same optically, so if the extra weight doesn't bother you and you can get it much cheaper, then go for it. The MK II is worth it if buying new (for the same price)
Great review as usual! I've seen in couple of reviews of the version II lens that the aperture blades don't seem to align properly when the lens is stopped down, creating a bokeh shape with uneven sides. Have you noticed anything of the sort in your copy?
Out of nowhere my Sony a7III doesn't recognize the lens. Both are pretty much brand new and they did work for months. I even upgraded lens' software and made a factory reset to my camera, nothing... Does anyone have a soluton or experiences the same problem?
Did you have the problem before the firmware update on the lens? You should send your concern to Viltrox and see if they can address this with a new firmware update. Also make sure that your contacts are clean on the lens mount.
@@DustinAbbottTWI It happened before the update after taking a few photographs, didn't drop it or anything. I have already contacted Viltrox as well. Contacts are as clean as they can be so that can't be the issue.
That's unfortunate. I don't have anything beyond that to offer. I didn't encounter that with either version of the 85mm, and I've not heard other feedback like that from anyone else.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Ah thank-you I was wondering if it stood for something like smooth transition focus only it had an M instead of an F..... or something.
The Mk1 has the usb connection for FW updates too, I think reviewers search a little for improvements to justify ... the only difference here is weight loss and a slightly better hood [my mk1 hood clicks on and off without issue] I think Placebo effect is in play here a lot of the time, this lens with most recent FW stands well up to any other 85 on the market
I actually said, "Like the MK1, the MK2 has a micro-usb port..." If I'm not mistaken, I listed three elements that have been addressed: reduced weight, redesigned hood, and slightly improved focus. I make it clear that the optics are unchanged. Hardly a placebo effect; I would call that accurate reporting.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I was thinking more reviewers in general, yours is just one I stopped on, have seen some suggest that the mkii has had some kind of optical overhaul. I'd have to re watch to nit pick tbh but I like your thorough reviews in general so I'll give you benefit of the doubt ;)
Hi Dustin, thanks for making this awesome video. I already own the Mark I of the lens, do you think I should sell it and pay a little more to get the Mark I?
Are you dissatisfied with what you have? The difference in weight is going to be the main difference, so if you can live with the weight, I would recommend keeping what you have.
Great review as always. Based on your previous 85mm shootout I was all set on the Samyang 85mm f1.4, but this review has me doubting a bit. Especially since it's quite a price difference in favour of the Viltrox and apparently you can 'tune' it to f1.6. Do you still consider the Samyang a decent upgrade over the Viltrox? I feel like choosing for the Viltrox leaves me still wanting the Samyang in the end.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for responding. I made up my mind and will just get the Samyang. Some additional cost but overall better IQ, bokeh and also warranty policy in my country seems worth it. And at least it rules out the 'what if I had paid a bit more..' scenario. Can't wait!
I must admit that I don't see how 136g makes a significant difference. In some situations I actually prefer the solid feel of the heavier lens. The new lens hood is a little nicer though. :)
It does make a difference when you are counting the grams for travel. It's actually 152g difference, which means the Mark 1 is 34% heavier - that's significant.
@@DustinAbbottTWI It's nitpicking but according to the specifications on the Viltrox website the difference between Mk1 and Mk2 is 136g for Fuji X-mount and 145g for Sony E-mount (629g vs. 484g). So nearly 28% and 30% heavier respectively. I'll argue that whether that's significant or not depends on individual preferences. For travel I agree that lighter is generally better but heavier gear can give you a more solid and premium feel which I personally like when I'm being deliberate about my photography.
You spend a ton of time on the weight, which is a good thing based on the Fuji cameras which tend to be smaller. But you never say HOW they lowered the weight. Same build quality, etc. They had to remove something!
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks. I really feel shorted. I bought the lens from Amazon about two weeks ago and naturally got the original since I wasn't aware of the Mark II. Oooops!

Hi Frank, $200 more could be a deal breaker for some people, but I think the bigger answer is Fuji. This lens compares fairly well to the $950 Fujinon 90mm F2.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Fuji is an overpriced system and not full frame. A good 135mm equivalent lens is a nice addition but not first choice for portrait. Samyang f1.4 and Sony f1.8 are both excellent value on FE, leaving little room to Viltrox.
Yes, I agree. Cheap lenses manufacturers learn on the fly whilst lacking the resources to build them up from scratch upon an original optimal concept for quality performance. Petal shape hoods give a "better protection"? Gimme a break.
The petal shaped hood is deeper and provides better, more nuanced protection from the sun. You seem very critical but without any substantive accusations.
Well, well, my dear Justin, your perception on the matter of hood shapes is completely off the reality hook. I must explain to you and to your readers, briefly, the real principle behind each shape vis-a-vis the effects they yield in photography: 1) there are, basically, 3 hood shapes. Round, Petal and Square. 2) The round shape is the most common type of lens hood and is most often used with standard and telephoto lenses 3) The petal shape is used mostly with wide-angle lenses, the special petal shape prevents it from intruding in the picture and cutting off part of the image. 4) The Square shape is used mostly with wideangle lenses. The square corners of this hood prevent it from being seen in the picture..5) ALL these 3 hood shapes are used to prvent side angled light rays diffraction (Diffraction is the slight bending of light as it passes around the edge of an object. The amount of bending depends on the relative size of the wavelength of light to the size of the opening) that causes flare on the image and none of them is specifically deeper or shallower in respect to a given shape. The depth of a hood varies from brand to brand. The petal shaped hoods have been conceived in that way simply to avoid its obstruction when composing a scene with super-angular (wide) lenses. With regard to the technology applied in the manufacture of any given lens it is widely recognizeds by professional photographers the fact that none of the most resourceful lenses manufactures adopt on-the-fly learning curves. The latest state-of-the-art optical technology has been developed with lots, lots of human research and equipment resources, an impossible feat to be achieved through on-the-fly observation. Professionals accept nothing less. We buy lenses brands such as Hasselblad, Leica, Fujifilm, Canon and Zeiss because we don't want to replace them every 10 or 20 years. Buying the best lenses is an investment, better still than the stock market, What we buy today should last and be serviceable for decades. Vitrox, Samyang ant other lesser brands that you seem to be fond of (only God knows why) are certainly not on this league. Finally, Dustin, I do not accuse. I dig out facts. There's no need for you to be so much defensive. Your struggle should not be with your readers but with your conscience.
I recently purchased the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 from WBPhoto on Ebay - The focus on my A7r3 was Rubbish at best + The lens locked up within my first 20 shots. Combine this with some really poor firmware this is by no means a good buy. Perhaps I was unlucky but I will be going to Sony / Sigma that way you can at least be sure that the focus system will work with Sony - The eye focus was more like a nose or mouth focus it was really inaccurate. Finally, Watch out buying this lens or any lenses on Ebay - WBPHOTO claims that the lens comes from the UK - When it came to returning the lens I had to spend £36 at my own expense to return it to China - The sony is double the price for a reason!

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you - so this 85mm 1.8 II would be a micro usb. Someone actually from Viltrox said it uses a USB 3.0 mini B, which doesn't make sense to me.
top review again
I appreciate that
very happy with my viltrox 85 mark II. Compared to my other sony lenses- 16-35 and 24-105 f4, the images SOOC (including the raws) have much more saturation and contrast. Is this a prime lens thing, a viltrox thing, or something else going on? And thanks for your reviews- always watching the sony reviews!
It's partly a prime thing - but that's only true if it's a good lens, and this Viltrox punches above its weight.
Thank u sir! Great review and I want to get this for my fuji
It's a nice value lens, for sure.
Hey Dustin. Do you believe their claim that the elements itself are identical? Only hood and shell should be different according to Viltrox. But aperture blades seem worse, from what Ive seen.
I haven't seen any major differences in any of those features.
Thanks for the review, Dustin ! Just got my copy today. I am a bit surprised with the sound the aperture blades are generating. Maybe you mentioned it, but I am not sure. Did you experience the same thing ? Thank you !
I don't recall my copy having loud results, but that wouldn't shock me, either.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ok thanks for the reply
Thank you, Dustin, for this great review. I am in the market looking for an 85mm in a tight budget. After seeing this review I am quite eager to buy it. I just wanted to know if this had any weather sealing at the back or in the body of the lens. I shoot in environments where it is dusty.
Unfortunately no. Your best budget 85mm option with sealing is the Samyang/Rokinon 85mm F1.4 AF
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the response. I will check those lenses.
Cheers 👍
Hello sir
help me decide what to buy Samyang 85mm 1.4 AF or Viltrox 85mm 1.8 II?
I like the Samyang better overall.
do you recommend this for aps-c? or would it be a bit tight? i currently only have sigma 30 1.4 and i'm looking to get something with a bit more reach. i am also looking at Sony E 18-105mm f/4 G and i like the focal range, but it lacks sharpness compared to prime lenses. they are the same price (around $400, but viltrox is brand new and the other one is used). what do you think? or do you have a suggestion for something else that is under $400.
If reach is your priority, then I think it should be a nice compliment to your 30mm
Thanks for the review!
My pleasure!
Hi Dustin, do you if it’s the same lens as the Tokina 85 1.8 FE?
I have no reason to believe that to be the case. The dimensions and weight are a bit different, though the optical formula has the same amount of elements. I'm not aware of any relationship between the two companies, though.
Hi @Dustin . Regarding almost same price level - regarding bokeh, colors and IQ, do you reccomend more Viltrox 85 mark II or Samyang/Rokinon 75 ? Im really curious about your opinion.
Optically they are more similar than different, but I do love the Samyang's form factor.
Version 1 appears to be a bit sharper overall.
They are very close, but I don't think I disagree.
50 mm 1.4, next?....maybe? :). We need an alternative to the expensive Planar, the Frankenstein Sigma, and the Horrible Samyang
I do hope that someone creates a nice middle of the road 50mm F1.4 for Sony.
Really enjoy your reviews. Do you have any opinions on comparing the Viltrox 85mm on a Fuji to the Sigma 56mm on M43?
Not really, as I haven't tested M43 at all.
Hey, do you recommend extremly the Mark 2 Version or is the Mark 1 Version also fine?
I have the Mark I and I love it. Some little peeves here and there but it works just as well as my other lenses besides some focus hunting but it was mostly fixed in the firmware a few months ago. I actually got it because I prefer the bokeh over the Sony lens. Sony’s was too cats eye for me
I’m not a professional though, just a tech and photography nerd/hobbiest.
Both of them are a little lopsided...but the new one is no worse than the first edition.
My Mkii actually focuses much better in low light than the Sony version and other reviews on RUclips confirm this.
That's interesting.
Can you swap the lens hood? From the fuji 85mm to the sony 85mm ver 2?
I think so. The bayonet size is the same.
@@DustinAbbottTWI coz the lens hood of the fuji one looks cheap. Im planning to buy the sony lens hood. Hopefully it fits
And now the RF MOUNT
Yes - I've got a review copy coming.
I didn't encounter that with either version of the 85mm, and I've not heard other feedback like that from anyone else.
what does the STM stand for?
Stepping Motor. It's the focus motor.
I have version 1 and love it. I see that the version one in this video seems a bit sharper in the corners.
More mechanical noise in the mk2
Interesting. I didn't notice that.
I like the Samyang better overall. BTW, I've never been able to make that firmware update to F1.6 work on either lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for responding. I made up my mind and will just get the Samyang. Some additional cost but overall better IQ, bokeh and also warranty policy in my country seems worth it. And at least it rules out the 'what if I had paid a bit more..' scenario. Can't wait!
Does Samyang have an AF version for native Fuji mount?

Ahhh, I was looking at the Sony specifications, as both the MK 1 and MK 2 versions I have are both in the Sony FE mount.
Its a huge difference when you have to carry your full kit on your back the whole day. Every gram counts.
You spend a ton of time on the weight, which is a good thing based on the Fuji cameras which tend to be smaller. But you never say HOW they lowered the weight. Same build quality, etc. They had to remove something!
That's true, though there's nothing really apparent. Both lenses feel well made out of metal. There's nothing discernible from the outside.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks. I really feel shorted. I bought the lens from Amazon about two weeks ago and naturally got the original since I wasn't aware of the Mark II. Oooops!
Don Durham so send it back?!
I shot my lates video in this viltrox
It's a useful lens, for sure.
Hi Dustin, Do you know if you had the latest firmaware on the mk2 ? www.viltrox.com/en/index.php?m=index&a=show&cid=149&id=292 "1.Fixed an issue where AF-C focusing failed to follow the focus during low-speed continuous shooting.
I had the most recent firmware at the day of review.
Man your model just did not want to be there that day lol.
She just got her braces on again, so wasn't interested in opening her mouth :)
Dustin Abbott oh that’s sad. Too bad!
Sony FE 85 f1.8 is really not much more than this lens. Why Viltrox
Also better rendering from what I have seen
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Found that one pretty funny, did you?
That's unfortunate. I've spent time with 3 or 4 of them without any issue.
