Civilization games taught me that the earth is flat. Sure you can go horizontally and meet at the same place but that's because of the teleportation field that exists.
I might be wrong but I would think the UN picked that map as old cold War nuke sims tended to have ICBM and B52 flightpaths over and around the north pole. And UN wanted to 'protect' from those events symbolically. Is that possible?
The funny thing about this is that you can make legitimate political talking points about this (since the northern hemisphere is near the centre and the global north is not just an economic category) which can also be countered with a rather simple argument. Having a projection with the Antarctica in the centre instead would heavily distort most of the landmass since most of it is, in fact, in the north and the logo would be a lot of empty space in the middle. Not the best for an organisation that wants to focus on cooperation between all nations.
Actually, there's more to it. With any mercator projector, there would necessarily be a country at the center (or you cut a continent). So much division is sown just by the signifiers of Western Hemisphere v. Eastern Hemisphere and Northern v. Southern that any orientation with a traditional projection might suggest a favoritism. In order to show the unity that all nations have equal standing in the idealized UN, the center of the map is landless (if they chose Antarctica as the center, certain countries can claim "ownership" while others have no relationship). Circles are also a symbol of unity. Presenting it this way was very intentional but not because we live on a flat earth.
As for the why - its to avoid using a map that centralizes on any one particular country. Thos is useful for an organization with lots of country members.
I do like the map for the UN. It reminds us that the mercator distorts and also that were all kinda connected. You can see how the first americans navigated when you see how close Siberia is to North America
More practically to the selection: Because it puts an empty space, the north pole, in the center. A traditional map projection would have the UK or generally speaking Europe at the center (as that was the whole idea of the british empire declaring the 0-meridian to run straight through their capital) and the US and China etc. way out in the periphery. Which would run a bit contrary to the idea of a community of equal partners.
It's also a great way to pick a neutral center point. With the azamuthal projection map, you don't have the divides of a regular map. Specifically, there's no "East" and "West". It's just earth top down. And math is cool
Love this channel. This dude is able to succinctly contextualise complex scientific principles into easily digestible short videos with accuracy and authority and that is an absolute talent. Kudos 🖖😎👌
Its a way of being a-politcal in your depiction of what's at the centre of the world, a traditional map would have had to choose a country or location that would have upset someone somewhere along the way
the thing i find funny is the gleasons map they all use says it is a projection on a globe. that is written in the map, and they still use it to prove a flat earth.
With that particular projection, no continent is in the centre, making the logo more universal (unlike, for example the one with Africa in the middle). Well, that's my theory. Antarctica wouldn't work well, as landmasses would be all around the edge of the logo, and also because there are territorial claims over the area.
Somebody needs to draw a projection map as viewed from the south pole if not already done or from any other country and present it to flerfs as the true map. Come to think of it Dan a digital view of a flat earth where you could place the center in any given point and view it from that vantage point. Useless but cool.

The face she makes reminds me of when Amber Heard thought she had a gotcha moment, saying that JD was a good liar because he convinced the world he had scissors for hands. 🤦♀️
Petition to get the circular projection done from the south pole and spread across the internet as an alternative map
Well, that would be the right way up for a change :-)
Fun idea... Not likely because most of the land is on the north half. South Pole center would mean far more distortion of populated areas than north pole center.
@@chrisbenson6683 I know, it's more just a demonstration that you could have chosen any point on earth to be the "center", so flerfs should stop acting like it has some relevance to the actual shape of the Earth.
@@Drummerx04 Maybe there are a few flerfs in Australia, who think that the mysterious ice wall is in the north?
The problem with that map is that the majority of it would be ocean. So unless you're trying to establish a unifying map for the underwater civilizations of the world, this is gonna be a tough sell.
You got the story backasswards! Nobody ever unwrapped the map off the ball! Every single map is drawn on a flat canvass, what your saying is we have always drawn maps on a round ball canvass. We just skinned the map canvass off the ball and laid it out flat!!!😂😂😂good story time
"Why are maps flat if the earth is a sphere? Checkmate science"
Civilization games taught me that the earth is flat. Sure you can go horizontally and meet at the same place but that's because of the teleportation field that exists.
@@Midala87 this guy gets it
I might be wrong but I would think the UN picked that map as old cold War nuke sims tended to have ICBM and B52 flightpaths over and around the north pole.
It’s a good way to show all the countries with out favouring any one region, unless you count Santa.
Very Very good 👍 explanation.
"is that of the Gleason's map" terrible communication skills...
Love this channel. This dude is able to succinctly contextualise complex scientific principles into easily digestible short videos with accuracy and authority and that is an absolute talent. Kudos 🖖😎👌
This is true! Specifically an Azimuthal Equidistant Projection. The map she had is no more a 'Gleason Map' than your computer is a 'Smith Computer'.
When your parents fail you so bad you end up like this.
Its a way of being a-politcal in your depiction of what's at the centre of the world, a traditional map would have had to choose a country or location that would have upset someone somewhere along the way
the crazy and hot graph makes so much sense now
It's actually more than that. It's a way to project the global with out the North South politics that connotates a hierarchy
How do flatearthers explain how you can go east or west to reach the same destinations?
It's also good map to use because it doesn't put any one country in the middle of the world in the center for everything.
can you hi-jack a openly published map used for navigation reference?
I've spent so much time on Instagram that I was waiting for the ELEMENT OF SURPRISE guy.
Always so proud they have the next 'super question' to ask, rather than stopping and thinking whether they should ask it in the first place ...
"My inability to understand basic concepts is actually a brilliant insight!" Every Flerfer
She's got a globe.
Checkmate.
Even if the UN logo was a globe, they'd still think it's flat.
Flat earthers ask alot of questions but dont listen to the answers
i would assume the UN picked that map as it does not set the focal point on any one contrary. the UN is a global organization after all.
Using this logic, a Mercator projection would be just as valid. However I see some issues with using the Mercator
Most of the populated land is in the northern hemisphere.
Ive got another question. WHY WOULD YOU NOT TURN THE RADIO OFF INSTEAD OF TRYING POORLY TO LET SOFTWARE CUT IT OUT?
the thing i find funny is the gleasons map they all use says it is a projection on a globe. that is written in the map, and they still use it to prove a flat earth.
With that particular projection, no continent is in the centre, making the logo more universal (unlike, for example the one with Africa in the middle). Well, that's my theory. Antarctica wouldn't work well, as landmasses would be all around the edge of the logo, and also because there are territorial claims over the area.
And being the UN you’d want to use the North Pole as the center to not show favoritism to any particular country.
Yep, you are the United Nations, all nations can be seen from this projection and that was deliberate.
Somebody needs to draw a projection map as viewed from the south pole if not already done or from any other country and present it to flerfs as the true map.
Come to think of it Dan a digital view of a flat earth where you could place the center in any given point and view it from that vantage point. Useless but cool.
Not only that, it visually decentralizes unlike other projections that necessarily put one country at the middle.
I noticed thst there is a bunch of people the live like there were not knowledge before them.
While a lot of "new" ideas for example Keto diet were on books long time ago.
