I remember being blown away by the graphics of CC and the PSP in general. Especially on a portable console. The only other FF game I'd played was FFVII and I really liked the combat in CC compared to the older games. I'm still impressed at what the PSP could do in the 2000s. While I love my switch OLED, and I'm still super impressed it can play gorgeous games like the Witcher 3 portably, I think I was even more blown away at the time by the graphics of the PSP compared to the original DS and previous handhelds. Wish I still had mine, I "let" my parents sell it in a yard sale along with ALL my old consoles and games while I was in college...
I'd been drinking with friends when they called me about the yard sale and I wasn't even thinking about what the consequences of saying "Sure! You can sell some of my old toys!" were....HUGE mistake. They practically gave them all away too. Didn't see a penny from it. All my money back then went into buying those consoles and games. Miss me some Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Syphon Filter, Burnout Legends, GOW Chains of Olympus, GTA Chinatown Wars, etc. Along with my GC, PS2, 360, N64 and all my games. Feels bad man...

For me my number 1 has to be Burnout 3. Burnout 1 was just alright and 2 was better and crash mode was super fun but 3 came up with the Takedown feature meaning it encouraged aggressive reckless driving and bashing into other racers. It really changed racing games for the better.

One of THE very best arcade racers OAT IMO, so much fun and the takedowns/unlockables gave you a constant set of new options and reward progressions that just helped keep you hooked long enough to get really good at the game and treat each race as your own personal playground. I really wish they'd re-release it, I wouldn't mind if they don't bother fully remastering it just give it HD and 60FPS and I'll buy it on Steam and be as happy as a pig in sh*t.

"Burnout Three:Takedown," considering its sheer ingenuity caught in the very eye of its "a mi me gusta los boosters" vision, felt as if a Kubrick take on "The Fast And Furious" franchise. With "Paradise," though, it all becomes sluggish as a perusal, not least a perusal of "The [vast/sparse] Steppe" by Anton Chekhov, which is wrong. Only thing a Burnout fan wanna read while playing Burnout is the traffic, by electrified instinct which curbs on intuition. "Burnout, the game" is meant to be the polar opposite of "burnout, the word."

I agree with so many of these, but I think comparing the tank controls of Resident Evil and Katamari Damacy is a bit misleading. Resident Evil has tank controls only in the sense that you control turning and forward/backwards movement independently and non-simultaneously. Katamari has true tank controls in that the analog sticks act like the treads of a tank and need to be controlled as such.

Morning, MJ! As you scoured the shelves for a surprising game, I remember these few gems which were meant to be the "redemption" of their particular series. Right off the bat is the sequel to the PS3's Warhawk(I guess it was called "Starhawk"), which was phenomenal. Problem was the meagre online community for it. There was also the sequel to that Ubisoft launch title for the Wii, "Red Steel 2." It was drastically better than the debut, and it still feels I'm speaking in euphemisms. The same MUST be said about "Rocksmith 2014" and "No More Heroes 2". Geez, even "Excite Bots"[Wii], a direct sequel to the tepid "Excite Truck", was a humdinger! Some of these "second chances" were SO much better than the inception of a series that we're talking about leaps that scratched the "resurrection level", rather than redemption alone. The biggest example of a full-on "resurrection," in all of gaming history, is obviously the second iteration of Street Fighter! Talk about a leap!

One game that surprised me on PS2, with how good the graphics were, how quickly I learned (& mastered) the controls, and just how rocking awesome the soundtrack was / is, adding up to one of my all-time favorite games through my lifetime playing games on various consoles, mobile, & yes, even pc... Burnout 3: Takedown.

There have been tons of welcome surprises over the years. Super Mario Bros knocked my socks off after having played only Atari 2600 games at home to that point. I had no idea that console games could be like that. Keith Courage was my first taste of 16-bit gaming, and stunned me with how it looked.
For a real surprise, though, Giga Wing on Dreamcast really took me off guard. I had played shooters a bit over the years, and while I had some that I liked, they had become somewhat a thing of the past to me... and then Giga Wing just exploded with so many bullets and colorful graphics. It completely made me fall in love with shooters again, old and new.

Maniac Mansion. I bought that one for the Commodore 64 back in the day purely based on the box. "This game looks cool!" Took that bad boy home and was amazed by what that game did. It was so clever that you could pick the kids you wanted to play the game with and they all had their own special personalities and abilities... and depending on who you took, the experience was different. Certain puzzles could only be accomplished with certain kids, and you got different results and endings depending on who you took, which made that game extra special for the time. The writing was a riot, as well... definitely a huge selling point. Point-and-click adventures were never quite the same after that one... Maniac Mansion really made me come to love the genre... and I just happened to stumble into it one day knowing nothing about it!

I took my family to a 3D arcade to play Beat Saber. I thought it was only going to be a little bit of a warmup thing we'd play for a few minutes before moving on to something more impressive. But we actually couldn't get enough of it and played it the whole time we were there. The controls are on point, the music is great, and the entire experience is just so engaging. I was surprised by how fun it is, too.

I just picked up Super Mario Odyssey yesterday and I am loving it so far. Been thinking about it for awhile, the Hat concept sounded really cool. I met Charles Martinet in Indy on Friday and forgot to ask what his favorite Mario game was, so searched the internet and this was one ( SM64 and Sunshine being others from what i seen) so I looked and Walmart had it for 40 bucks! Also, dude, i would have LOVED to come to Wisconsin to meet yall, but Indy Comic Con and Megadeth tonight got me tapped. Rock on and safe travels!

Shovel knight and Ace Combat Legacy + and resident evil revelations on the 3ds were fantastic to me, Half life and Deus Ex on the PS2 are great special versions with their own flare and bonus content/features, Hollow Knight on the switch was such a joy and so where many third party ports which idk how they got them on the switch, and Metroid Prime wowed me when I could unlock armor and the nes game if I linked my finished Metroid fusion game with my GameCube, and for the DS metroid prime hunters and other rumble/3D games that I never imagined would be possible on a handheld but yet we got them.

Didn't expect to see Crisis Core here! I believe they haven't re-released it due to Gackt's likeness used for Genesis's character model. They don't have the rights to use it anymore, and they would have to redo the character model along with all the pre-rendered cutscenes. I think it's worth it, as unfortunately it's one of those PSP games that was only released physically.

    Yoshi's woolly world!
I played it expecting level of any other Yoshisl game and I got so much more out of it!
Having not much time on my hands to play something I don't know if I would like that or not I very rarely run into positive surprises.
I have a good judgment in advance about how a game will turn out, so occasionally I might end ilup with a game that starts sucking at one point but 99% of the time get what I expected from games.
Woolly World was one of the rare exceptions that went beyond my expectations!
    Masterpiece!

Olliolli World is so fun on the Switch, it makes me feel like it is the Skate Or Die game I wanted and never could have had in the 1980's. Great colors, somewhat basic gameplay with a progressive challenge. I need a thunbstick cap though, it turned to dust doing advanced tricks.

Pitfall 2. I adored Pitfall, so I was extra excited to try the sequel. WOW! Pitfall 2 blew my mind! It was truly sprawling and expansive with what you could explore and gather... not just running right or left endlessly. It felt truly huge for the day! I know that the cart for the Atari 2600 included extra memory to handle how big the game was and even extra channels for music/audio... I can testify that they certainly put that extra memory to good use! Mind-blowing game for me back in the day! Easily one of the best games on the 2600 system... probably the most technically impressive game for it, at least.

I'm pretty behind the times, but I just started Mario Odyssey a couple weeks ago and I've been nothing short of blown away. I've only got 250 or so of the 999 moons and I've only burned through half the levels so far, but it feels like I've already played through two full Mario games.

Super Mario Odyssey really surprised me too, but probably quite differently. I thought is was a decent game. Entertaining, but not a must own. But then I decided to go for 100%. Beat all the challenges, get all the moons, unlock every costume, beat my friends in the mini-games. And that's when it really opened up to me. The late game freaking killed it! It was so rewarding to just keep pushing for that next impossible challenge. I thought I'd never get the triple jump, for example, but there's a race in there that absolutely requires it. So learn it I did! I've never played a game that paid just as much attention to late-game progression as early-game. Phenomenal.

great list! The most recent game to surprise me was Death Stranding. Even though it's fair to expect something off-the-wall from Kojima, no one expected a hardcore traversal sim! While "walking sim" became a derogatory term for DS, it actually creates unique gameplay mechanics and meta for something that is featured in so many games and therefore taken for granted.

For me some of the biggest surprises were, Resident Evil 4 on the GC, God Hand, Vanquish and Dead Space 2. Dead Space 1 was great but didnt expect the second game to be one of my favorites of all time. RE 4 I wasnt even anticipating and is still one of my favorite all time games. God Hand was a game I picked up with my PS3, despite it being a PS2 game, and didnt even know what it was. Its still one of my favorite games. Vanquish was a game I only played a demo of, but didnt click with me until I purchased it. Again, one of my top games.
I would add Ninja Gaiden for Xbox in there, but I knew about it for a while before picking up the Xbox. Its what sold me on the console along with Halo 2. I regard Ninja Gaiden Black among the best games as well. Gears Of War was one I was hyped about for a while so I cant say it was a surprise, but had a huge impact on me as well.

Played it and fell in love with it and have played them all both on PS2 then PSP then Xbox 360 then PS3 then PS Vita. Each game is slightly different like stages and different game play style like PSP uses the d pad plus face buttons and PS Vita uses the touch screens.
