Hi Charlie load of tosh I am a teetotaler, eaten healthy all my life no junk food it didn't exist when I was in my teens only fish and chips not like it does now .I have had tests done and my doctor says it is repetitive movements ie trowel in my hand and picking up wet damp bricks and blocks and standing in wet footing .I didn't see pen pushers in the site cabins with the aches and pains .I am 72 now and struggle with my wrist and knee joints .bricklaying is all I have ever known and done all my working life .

did you develop your back muscles though In the gym? because if your back muscles aren't strong enough when it comes to the spine the joints will help lift the load for you which destroys the disks

One of the most fatiguing career choices going from the damage it does to the muskoskeletal system, once the back goes it doesnt come back. Thats why i had to come off the tools, in my formative years going on like a hooray shunting 3m catnics, steel RSJ's, hodding bricks up 2 storeys on private extensions, just the wear and tear of constant repetitive movements of loading the mixer. Its a killer, the mantra in out burnt out by 50 still applies. My uncles are broken and the trowel is all theyve known so thats them till they call it a day. But theyre mercenaries and masochists and love it. Agree with the diet part but its proven, this career choice is a grueller.

Layed bricks today currently layed in bed heat pad on with back pain Charlie. 35 years of it back elbow and rotator cuff .Repetitive movement over to many years and im fat which dont help 😂 .You have a very valid point ive made on a video. I also think bricklayers should be educated in college to take care of there body.Me now at 50 its the arthritis joint pain from repetitive movement ive worked my bollocks off to be fair.I do 100% believe what you say about lifestyle would of been a help to me definitely and stretching before and after work along with exercises made for bricklaying. Bricklaying is a lifestyle Charlie ive learnt that 👍 great topic mate

As a 54 year old who started on the tools at 16 I worked at a time when health and safety wasn't a priority. It was the done thing to carry the heaviest weight and work like a donkey, and an unhealthy private life has left me unable to work with a poor standard of life. I have herniated discs in l1 to l7 and also prolapsed discs and sciatica. This affects my bladder and bowels and I have COPD too. I would love to be back at work but realistically I can't. You hit the nail on the head though, it is not just the work that does the damage. Love the channel dude, building is a wonderful way to earn a living and there has never been a time like this 👍❤️

Well said Charlie, inflammation from years of essentially substance abuse weather that be junk food or alcohol will destroy the joints like you wouldn't believe, we need to stretch joints and muscles to get new nutrients inside of them carried by new blood lubricating the system and flushing out the bad toxins.
I think it'll become more common knowledge in the future, with people like yourself creating content like this with very valid points.
Everybody complains about bending over, but nobody strengths the side that helps them get back up, our bodies are antagonistic all the muscles have relationships with the opposite side PE doesn't teach our kids this but it's more important than ever with all the lounging around we do.
Love your vids mate, all the best

I've been on the trowel 30 years and would put my back out 3 times a year and take a week off with muscle spasms each time .
I went to see the bad back lady and she told me to stretch on my hands and knees like a cat arches it's back when it wakes up, just for 20 seconds. I haven't had a bad back in 5 years.
Apparently you grow half inch during sleep due to your discs swelling , so your muscle tendons are stretched first thing in the morning.

I knew a good bricklayer, died 10 years ago, he had 10 kids, and he drank around 12 beers during work. Still worked in his retirement all week during summer until his mid 60s. He still wanted to work later on but he got so slow that nobody wanted him anymore. But no shame at this age. And he was nice to work with. Highly philosophical during lunch.

100% it causes back and joint pain. I was a bricklayer for 13 years from 17- 30. I then worked as a tiler for 10 years. Completely abused my body. Played lots of sport too. I had a double hip replacement at 40 years old. But what didn’t have was information and guidance how to look after your body. Listening to you Charlie and your message about looking after your body, stretching, gym, and a healthy diet, I reckon you could be a bricklayer into the 60s. Excellent video as per usual Charlie. 🙌🏻

If you do a any repetitive job and do not stretch before you sleep you will shorten the ligaments, tendons and muscles over time. Its this tightness that leads to most of peoples problems. Inflammation does exacerbate joint pain but also most do not drink enough high mineral content water or electrolytes to retain that water for longer in the fascia and tissues which helps repair and keep flexible.

Bricklaying nowadays is much easier on the body than it was 40 years ago, mainly down to good practice and h&s changes. Mortar stands, bricks stacked correctly, ready mixed mortar, fork tucks etc. Not much carried up a ladder nowadays other than a tool bag, used to have to carry every brick and every hod of muck up the ladder. You don't have to lift many heavy things like concrete lintols and the cement came in 50kg bags and you rarely see a wheelbarrow, we even had to manhandle the trusses up for the chippies😂 it's mainly just a trowel of muck & a brick nowadays. There were no gloves and a mask was your hanky tied round your face. You might have a different opinion if you were doing it back then Charlie.

I have to agree with this,, repetitive movements and carrying is not what our bodies are designed for,, you dont see animals doing the stuff humans do as “jobs”,, lions dont carry stuff on their backs for example. People who squat weights for example are in for a shock if or when they pull their back out, or worse their anus gets absolutely destroyed,, that isnt a joke either.

You obviously don't understand that at age 21 mens bodies begin to weaken and go on a downward slope from then on.....if you don't keep actively fit then sure...many problems will arise.

Enjoy all your stuff mate. But think you need to do another video when you're 55. You can eat healthy and all but it's all about wear and tear on your body and an ageing thing. 53 and still enjoying it, when it stops raining 😂

If you were drinking between 45 and 60 pints a week and now you drink nothing and eat really healthy it's a bit of a no brainer that you feel better..without a doubt laying bricks will have a impact on your back and joints if you do it all your life. Lifestyle and genetics will play a part but a few beers and a kebab ain't gonna turn you into a cripple

It sure can if you're an older fella. At 35+ our bodies are on a one way trip to getting weaker etc. That's just basic human anatomy lol. So, with that in mind if someone doesn't regularly exercise but does this for a career for years it will effect joints and muscles. But keeping actively fit with a good diet will definitely decrease those type problems from occurring.

Hi charlie m8 😊 Ricky the bricky here i really do think if u put shite in your body it will react over time . Ive ate well from i started in 1984 hardly drink much but in my 40s i felt the pain set in im 55 now and can just do part time 😢 but up on till a few years ago i always had my muck boards on the ground on two blocks so i know that much dipping with a 11 trowel was probally to blame just a thought 👌
