I took Northeast Regional 67 to Newport News this morning and we passed 86 (the train that would be derailed) on the way down south. Missed them by roughly 45 minutes. I was actually supposed to take 186 back up to Baltimore but unfortunately the train was canceled due to this incident. Had to dash out $250 for a one way 30-min flight on Southwest from Norfolk to Baltimore. What a absolute crazy day!

Update as of 3:39p Jul 12 (almost a day later): Train 86's affected engine (also derailed) and cars are still in the tunnel, but one track is clear and was able to get trains 20 and 92 through. They did have to go up the CSX line for MARC's Camden line service a bit then back into Union Station to let passengers off/on and swap engines.
You would think with all the technology today derailments would be a thing in the past. Living in the Mid-West it’s like a never ending saga. I’m glad passengers were ok except for the medical emergency. Hopefully they’ll be ok.

Not just 2 Amtrak coaches but the locomotive left the rails in the tunnel leading to Union Station from the south. Strictly Northeast Corridor service may not be affected. Anything to or from south of Washington, from Manassas to Miami, likely flung away.
There's a perfect walkway up high just down from the station give you a clear view back toward the ladder truck up to union.its at, L St Ne at the tracks.

@@patevans3709 Passenger trains get their a/c and lights from "head end power" from the locomotive. When the engine derailed in the tunnel, some connection was broken so the HEP went out. Or else they shut the loco down for safety reasons.

What they do with the infrastructure money they took for roads, bridges and tracks? They never seem to fix anything, same old pot holes I have to dodge every day.
All that money that was “appropriated” is just ripe for many types of corruption via state and local governments and democrat union officials getting payback through the Bribum administration. Just because they have ways and means to spend the money on infrastructure projects doesn’t mean they will go through with them. Shovel ready projects aren’t ALWAYS “shovel ready”, Friend.

The request was for specific categories of infrastructure, and the state determines which specific projects are to be handled, and the order in which they are completed! Railroads are funded by the private sector--the companies that own/run the trains also own/maintain the tracks. In an effort to improve railroad fluidity and improve supply chains, $1 BILLION was included in the Infrastructure Bill for specific areas of improvement and expansion. Such funding has not been provided in the past, but it is necessary. The previous administration was short-sighted on expanding the railroad system and decreased safety requirements. Prior to this one time Infrastructure Bill, the railroad companies were responsible for all maintenance. The only exception was for repairs at state and federal highway intersections with railroad tracks--those costs are shared with the railroad companies to ensure safety standards are maintained.

I have always had a interest in your railroads in the states with the history and the many different railroad company's but these derailments that seem to happen every week isn't normal, most of the time it comes down to the track infrastructure but instead of getting the track standards to what it's like here in the UK/Europe it's just put back to what it was because that's the way it's been done for years
There are over 1,500 per year in the US....around 5 per day. This isn't rare. Look at the number to trains (and the insane number of cars) running on US tracks everyday. The derailments are not surprising.

He was a yes-man only seeking approval and gratification from donors and companies--NOT examining long-term outcomes. Railroad companies own the tracks and the trains--they are private companies. Biden is making an effort to improve the railroads through reimplementing safety standards and expanding some tracks. These will also improve the fluidity of product and service chains. As to solar activity it doesn't influence our weather as much as things that humans do, gas burning automobiles have a much stronger impact on it by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It is going to have some average temperature, and as I uncover the covered windows panes this average temperature is going to increase because I am trapping more heat energy in the greenhouse.

The osprey almost caused multiple car wrecks. Everyone in front of me stopped to look at it. Was a bit scary for a moment. They're really loud.
Locomotive and at least one passenger car derailed in A interlocking south of the lower level platform tracks at Washington Union station.
