I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG !!!!!! ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES !!!!! It came out in the late spring or early summer of 1978 and 45 years later in 2023 COPA CABANA sounds just as super great as it did way back in 1978.
That is exactly what the lyrics are all about: To be at its peak and eventually, going down to the depths. Nevertheless, this is a true gem: it reminds me the novels of Christie (just a naïve sort of riddle), you know the story is not going to end very well. And that "who shot who?"... hehe, just to be known a couple of bars later that, now Lola, "was a showgirl, but that was thirty years ago, when she used to have a show", so who died was Tony and now she's absolutely wasted, like her "faded feathers in her hair", but "she sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind". Just as the real life: we all adopte a pose to make our worries live into oblivion. Pure life poetry, that are these lyrics, pure gold. Really sad, but with a pinch of "humeur noir".
This song is either the one you play at a date with your true love just for fun or the song you play alone in your room remembering this moment and feeling sad.
For those wondering, the musicians are lead and backing vocalist-pianist Barry Manilow; backing vocalists Ron Dante, Ginger Blake, Laura Creamer, and Linda Dillard; guitarist Mitch Holder; bassist Will Lee; drummer Richie Zito; percussionist Alan Estes; and keyboardist Bill Mays.
Michael Glickman and of course all led by master chefs Ron Dante and Michael Delugg at the controls....resulting in one of the epic songs in all of pop music....
When I was 11 we went to Port Grimaud and a cafe on the beach had a juke box, I would play this 10 times in succession, and yet no one complained, it's a great song. Great memories too.
rj mcAllister your so wright in saying 'this is still the best version'. because there are a lot. but this i find the ultimate. also because it's the first song i can remember hearing. being 6 years old spending the summer at my grandparents. and this song playing on the radio all summer long.. i was so happy finding the single when i was 21.. hihi my first musical memory
I completely share your opinion. This original version (which I have on a 45 RPM record) is indeed unavailable on CD, which is truly disappointing. I understand your frustration about this, and it's regrettable that the opportunity to include this authentic version in the complete box set was missed, especially considering that the intro was mixed with the demo version!
Classic record ... I remember when this came out ... as a baby drummer in the 1st grade ... I always tried to play the percussion part. Thought I was bad ass ...
My friend introduced me to this song a few years ago and I was like' hey this is a great song to dance to! ' but it's actually a really dark song hahah
Since I saw several comments about “this is the best version,” I’ll post this here. Varese Sarabande reissued the “Foul Play” soundtrack on CD in 2016. That version has the original length “Copacabana” on it; the 2009 Intrada reissue does NOT; neither does the version on RUclips as I’m typing this. The “Foul Play” soundtrack is also the only place to find the true stereo version of “Ready to Take a Chance Again,” with a slightly different background. The single and all reissues on various greatest hits albums are all mono.
Big thanks for sharing this. I heard there were a few different versions on same album depending on when it was pressed. The long club version is too much. This is the LP version I recall best.
Me a non-native speaker english: Wow it was a while since I don't listen to this song! **me finally understanding what was about Copacabana* * Me: Oh holy shit...
The original LP version of this did make it on the CD box set and the Copacabana Soundtrack. On the CD box set, they ruined it with the piano thing at the beginning. On the soundtrack, it plays the first part of the song and the last part of the song, but the middle of the song was left out. That's ridiculous. The soundtrack definitely should have contained the original LP version of this song. The original LP version is the best version of the song.
Thank you for posting the song. The story of the song is somewhat mesmerizing. It's exciting but ends very sad. Somewhat touching on Pink Floyd's "Time," this is one story that fits that song. They can make a movie on "Copa Cabana."
Thank you for uploading. This is the best rip I've heard so far. Talk about an AM-radio-friendly mix; flashbacks of 77-WABC. Why couldn't the label just re-issue the album in tact, without replacing this version with the extended 12" version? That's what compilations are for, or archival editions (expanded, deluxe, etc).

This was one of my Mom's fave songs and I have just recently lost my husband Tony ( to cancer however, not a gunshot) so when I hear it, I think of my Mom and also Tony of course ( "She lost her Tony"

1978; I was playing this one in clubs and on radio before I got hired for a country station! This is still the best version of all.
EXACTLY - & nowhere to be found now. I bought the remastered Even Now album and Copa on there was replaced by the disco version. UGH!!!
Exactly, the best version.
Unforgettable ¡!¡!

The dark lyrics in this song always send chills down my spine.

you can also tell by she lost her love, and we assume he doesn't mean Rico
I'm stuck in the 70's I don't wanna get out my family already told me they gonna play 70's music when I die
Rachel Diniz are you stupid, the lyrics tell us she lost her tony🙄

Best version
One of the best songs ever! Reminds me of old school NYC! Never gets old
This song is either the one you play at a date with your true love just for fun or the song you play alone in your room remembering this moment and feeling sad.

Whoa! Ron Dante of The Archies? Too cool!
When I was 11 we went to Port Grimaud and a cafe on the beach had a juke box, I would play this 10 times in succession, and yet no one complained, it's a great song. Great memories too.
I like this version the best. It's just right. For some unknown reason, this version was never available on CD format. Thank goodness for RUclips.
If you can find it, Varese Sarabande reissued the Foul Play soundtrack on CD in 2016. Don’t bother with the reissue on Intrada.
I love this song. I listen to it on repeat every day in the shower.
Excellent version 🌠🌴🌠🌴🌠🌴🌠🌴🌠
Barry Im from Havana......We call you in 🇨🇺 Cuba-- El hombre de la biz Del cielo -- The man with the voice from heaven....God bless 5he USA.

Finally, the hit version as we remember it...or close enough! The promo edit ran 3:48 but this is the right mix so let's not quibble.
This song is the Story of my life. Always wanted to be a showgirl!

This is actually epic. Usually, you'd think Manilow wouldn't do stuff like this.

This is indeed the version I know best ! It's exactly the same as the 7 Inch version that was played on the Dutch radio stations in '78 :)
dear Lorde, I didnt realise this song was so dark!
Another nice song. Great upload. My girl loves this song.
The song is very sad. It's has a love triangle and somebody got murdered.

Corrigir
Com penas amarelas em seu cabelo
e um vestido cotado embaixo
Ela fazia o merengue e o cha-cha
E enquanto ela tentava ser uma estrela
Tony sempre atendia o bar
No Copa, Copacabana
No Copa, Copacabana
Música e paixão sempre estão na moda
No Copa...
No Copa, Copacabana
No Copa, Copacabana
Música e paixão sempre estão na moda
No Copa...
No Copa, Copacabana
No Copa, Copacabana
Música e paixão sempre estão na moda
No Copa... Não se apaixone
