Why I love Dave Simpson: (1) Intro jams (2) Epic, expressive, melodic playing (3) Dedication to sharing helpful advice, tutorials, lessons, and encouraging others' love of music through his own (4) A genuinely humble, funny, caring, all-around decent human being

My love of music started in the early 1960's with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and with pirate radio soon encompassed many other bands and most importantly the blues (Mike Raven's Blues show). The guitar side developed from seeing such greats as Peter Green, Clapton and most importantly an unknown guy called Jimi on his very first UK tour of small clubs and venues when he visited my home town. Blown away does not describe it and from then on great guitarists have always been a magnet for me. Age has made me pretty choosy as to who I listen to. That includes one Dave Simpson - did I mention him ?

i feel like its important as a guitarist to try to inspire the next guitarist to evolve and take their love for it to the next level. for me, you have done this. i honestly cannot put into words how much you inspire me every day to play guitar. I usually find it difficult to consistently focus on tasks but you keep me coming back to my guitar every day and i thank you for this because music and guitar is what keeps me going. i've improved so much in the last few months and i find myself playing things without even thinking. i get goosebumps when i play and now i truly feel what i'm playing. its true happiness. Thank you, Dave!

you truly are a very genuine cat, just a fantastic dude. Your mental wellness vids really touch home with me man and its awesome that you produce stories on the subject. Ive been fighting depression my whole life, very similar to you during school days. I had a broadcasting news photog gig for 30 years, house on the lake in Dallas for 14 years and was building up a 401 k. In 2007 I was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a lemon, non cancerous. I was rushed to hospital for 18 hr brain surgery, lost function in left hand for awhile so guitar was taken away from me, its back now, not perfect but back. I was in hospital for a month and physical therapy ( terrorist ) for a year to learn to walk and talk. After all that , got laid off and lost job, house, 401k because i tried to save my house. Things remain to steadily go down hill for me ever sense. Depression is putting it lightly. I live in tx where gun ownership is natural. Dont have the balls to take the easy way out. Typically I dont share this story because of dark memories, but you did for us so it only feels right to let it out. You truly are inspirational Dave.

I have loved music since I can remember. A few years ago I suffered an injury which has left me suffering pain on a daily basis (not looking for sympathy, I'm alive with working digits) and music has provided me with, not pain relief, but camoflage for pain. When the pain is high I stick my headphones on couch out. For me instrumental music works best. Rock on Dave.

If you listen to your outro on 2x playback speed - you'll discover how happy and "major" your tune is. It almost has a reggae or Caribbean sound to it. Your happiness is shining through in that song. Just when I slowed it down - I looked up and saw this beautiful little moment of you smiling and feeling joy - even at normal speed it shines through! Happy for you. And to continue with your depth - if you had not put the effort into guitar and youtube and letting your new friends into your life - you may never have written that wonderful tune. Cheers, man.

Some truly beautiful thoughts in this video. So glad you got to spend that time with two new friends and be reminded of the positive feelings that can always be waiting around the next corner :) I can say, at least for me personally, you’ve been extremely successful in those things you said you try to accomplish with your guitar playing. There’s something about your style that speaks to the soul and is a cathartic emotional release for player and listener alike. I have a pretty short attention span and normally click away from things pretty quickly, but your intro jams keep me captivated for their entire duration, and reading all the positive comments here from this community while you play puts a smile on my face every time. I agree so much with all your thoughts on music, guitar, the way it can bring people together, the way it can speak for you, the way it can carry away bad emotions and replace them with lighter ones. Great stuff :)

I really love listening to Frusciante's music, whether it's his solo stuff (which I especially love) or it's hom with the Chili Peppers/Ataxia and so on.
That said there are periods of time when I lie down and the only thing that can make me feel better or put me at ease are songs like "Before the Beginning" or "Wayne" and so on. Loving so much his guitar work, it saddens me a little that Frusciante has stopped releasing more of it. Listening to many other guitarists, I never got that same thing John's work gave me.
As an admirer of John's guitar-playing I've stumbled upon your channel a while ago, and now after watching this Video as I type... I have to say that I am truly amazed by your playing. I will put it, plus some of Frusciante's and Buckethead's songs, into that "special playlist" which your soul and mind craves for from time to time.
I usually don't take the time to write comments, but you seem like someone who would truly appreciate hearing that people are amazed by your playing and I am sure you deserve it.
Edit: Watching your video "Why I love Scar Tissue" and noticing that you described it best yourself while talking about the song dedicated to your grandma. "It can help." This is exactly how I feel when listening to your or Frusciante's playing. Keep it up.

Dave, you can learn how to deal with social situations, but you have to have born talent to be able to play like you :)

Very true, the power of music is ultimately transporting, it gives our heart/mind wings which we can all fly with.

Hi, Dave. Newbie to your channel, but kinda binge-watching your stuff. The thing that gets me easily is how innocently enthusiastic your eyes seem. Like a kid’s, very receptive yet pure-hearted. Same as the way you seem to “devote” yourself to the experience of playing guitar, in a sort of ritualistic and soulful way. You feeling sad or broken, I’d say with a certain amount of ease (no pun intended) is just the evidence of your kind nature, just don’t give in. Good hearted people are sufferers, because they love regardless. And when they tap into their sadness as a craft.... man, that’s jewelry material right there. So... go ahead, my friend. Tap into your sadness. Just don’t give in to it. Kind regards.

Hey, man. Thanks for the music, and the videos. You make yourself vulnerable through music and monologue. I think this is why your videos and music resonate. Are you interested in lyrics? I was motivated to play guitar to give voice to my words. Now, I also aspire to play guitar as well as you do. However, my lyrics have always been my babies. Let me know if you are interested in reading any of my songs. In any event, thank you, sincerely, for your music. Cheers!

You do realise that you're gonna have a queue of people looking to be your musical friends now Dave?! I know I'd be in there if I had the playing chops to keep up!

It was gear and music that led me to your channel! Always watched your videos as they were always funny, thorough, honest, entertaining, and always had exactly what I was looking for when it came to ... well everything. It was also you that forced me to visit youtube more and more, making an account and eventually a channel. Once I learned the ropes, I subscribed, watched as many videos as far back as I could, and now never miss one. And I always click like!! I've even gone back and re-watched some old ones several times, making sure to click like on every one that I watched. You're awesome Dave! Thank you for all you videos, your opinions, giving me something to look forward to, something to listen to, your advice, your lessons, your honesty, and for always being able to put a smile on my face. Long time fan and always will be :) Music brought me here, Dave is the reason I stay.

Sometimes, I mourn. Doesn't have to be anything directly affecting my life. This morning I learned of the crash of an historic WWII bomber, with multiple fatalities. I've just always admired that aircraft, and the stories around it. In fact, I had visited that exact plane in the past. The next thing I watched, after digesting that, was your intro jam. Three seconds in to it, I knew you were feeling something...close to that "wavelength," LoL! Thanks for that, and I'm glad you're still making the song.

It is totally refreshing to listen your thoughts Dave. We are all people who have discovered the joy and happiness that comes from the whole psychedelic counterculture. It has shrunk, it is true, but it lives nevertheless. Who would want to live in the boring, grey, depressing, suited nightmare where the 'normals' choose to inhabit (Kinks 'People in Grey)? You are doing great communication Dave - love it... More power to you and so much thanks for your guitar lessons. If you ever think you have gone too far just listen to some Beefheart or Kevin Ayers and you will realise we are all just beginners!

I am about to try and watch the rest of the video, mainly because I have had to re-listen to the intro several times...that my friend is the very definition of anthemic. Marvellous is perhaps an understatement.

The intro was beautiful, and the story behind it made it ... so much more... sensitive??? well, just more better : )
