- The lightweight from Mexico City, standing at 5'4", successfully transitioned a wrestling-oriented match into a brawl, ultimately clinching a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Matias Romero. Judges Glenn Feldman (114-113), Steve Weisfeld (118-109, a score questioned by some), and Kevin Morgan (115-112) all favored Cruz in the WBA lightweight title eliminator held Saturday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Prior to the bout, Cruz had emphasized that he didn't feel pressured to replicate his previous explosive performance-a 53-second knockout of former title challenger Diego Magdaleno. Staying true to his word, Cruz diligently executed the game plan set forth by his team, relentlessly moving forward.
Romero attempted to capitalize on his height and reach advantages by boxing from the outside and utilizing a heavy jab. However, his frequent resort to clinching in response to Cruz's pressure slowed down the pace of the bout, especially in the early rounds.
In the second round, Romero hit the canvas twice while trying to clinch, prompting a warning from referee Harvey Dock. Despite being effective with his right uppercut from a distance, Romero's excessive clinching overshadowed his offensive efforts.
As the fight progressed, Romero's strategy increasingly revolved around circling the ring perimeter and clinching whenever Cruz closed the distance. Cruz, on the other hand, capitalized on Romero's vulnerabilities, landing body shots and uppercuts whenever the opportunity arose.
In the later rounds, Cruz's momentum remained strong as he established his jab, setting up effective combinations. Romero's offensive output dwindled, resorting to lateral movement and clinching in an attempt to disrupt Cruz's rhythm.
