  • Before International Rugby matches, the New Zealand All Blacks perform the Haka, a traditional war dance meant to intimidate the opponent. It is also used to honor a distinguished guest. After Beyoncé's October 19 show in Auckland the local crew welcomed her with a Haka.

    Working in tourism I have never seen anyone let alone a female, embrace the haka quite like she did. Tourists to any cultural experience in NZ are encouraged to interact AND participate in the Haka. Some of them stand there and giggle even when advised not too. She was clearly in awe of what was before her and had mad appreciation during the whole thing. To enter the way she did was so fierce and a huge honour I bet for those guys, that she embraced the haka in this way. Go Bey!!!

    OKAY.
    1) It's NOT disrespectful to join in, especially if you don't know anything about our culture.
    2) HAKA is a war Dance.
    Everyone chill. Poly pride. We love people learning our culture, because it's a beautiful one. You cyber trolls need to get a life.

      ⚠️ *CORRECTION:* ⚠️ The Haka is _not_ a war-dance only. We use it to show respect, welcome and honour people. This is why we perform the haka at funerals, weddings, to honoured guests like Beyonce or Obama.

    I'm not Maori but I'm quite familiar with the haka dance. I've never seen anyone dancing back with such passion and imitation like Beyonce did during a haka dance. The other team would usually wait until its over for them to do their own haka. But dang! She handled it like a BOSS! The haka warriors even did a lil hip thrust for Beyonce appreciating her hip hop moves maybe. Hah! Coolest haka dance exchange ever!!!

    • @cyanidesuperhero
      @cyanidesuperhero 9 лет назад +12

      You don't see it v often because you're not supposed to respond to the haka by performing it back. It's okay though bc she didn't know, most people are informed about what you're supposed to do during the exchange

      Liam Catton Hey :) you can respond to the haka, by doing a haka back.
      in this state its more of a Haka Tautoko or something of support to that person/ Beyonce..
      Its done at Manukorero, Kapa Haka competitons for the overall winners and so forth.

      Kayla Tacken Do you know every custom in the world? Most people *_don't._* Including Beyonce. We Maori's don't give af if she danced back because we see her *intention* and understand the *context.* Rather we are SO honoured that she welcomed it wholeheartedly.

  • @safdgbv

    Listen... if she knew it was gonna be disrespectful I'm sure she wouldn't have participated (judging from her enthusiasm). Just understand she's a "western" girl, and "western traditions" encourage participation as like a form of acceptance, respect, or love. It was no intentional disrespect and everyone in the video knew that.

    For her to upload this video must really show she embraced and was proud to be apart of this moment. She has never had an experience like this in any other country. This also reflects how willing New Zealanders were to show her the maori culture before she left, which to me, shows that our culture is special. Makes be so proud to be a Kiwi and even more proud to be maori. She is God's gift to Earth. Peace

    People need to stop saying we only displayed 'Maori Culture' like we need to get out of this idea that we are different. Be proud that you are Maori, be proud that you are Pakeha. And acknowledge each other as New Zealanders, as Kiwis. The Haka is part of New Zealand, it has Maori roots but it's something iconic and memorable to New Zealanders. So those people who are saying she should have seen more New Zealand culture. This is how we as New Zealanders honour and greet guests to this country, it's not just a 'Maori Thing' if it were we'd have all the White Rugby players sit out on the Haka. But we don't.

    • @Maiier
      @Maiier 6 лет назад +4

      Crazydunn99 .........It’s is Maori and of only Maori Culture. Don’t try to delude the haka and call it a New Zealand/Kiwi thing. Because the haka displayed on the field isnt the only type of haka. But i can guarantee you that It’s the only one majority of people in new zealand know. But can New Zealander perform or show any other types of hakas? Most likely not. The only people who truly have interest in other haka’s are Maori people. Or the very few who have actual interest in it.
