So the leader of the OG set was unpredictable. One might say he had a tendency to go off the rails.

Careful there, you know that's a tender subject.

Given how Rail is still a huge important of everyday life in the UK, I’m surprised at least by how the likes of Raiden wasn’t used more in UK Transformers material.
And how would that help sell toys?
Important, but not necessarily POPULAR, not to the degree as Japan anyway.
japan's culture idolises trains and train conductors, it's an all diffrent level from just having a lot of them.
They'd have been the first Transformers to be privatised. Then proceeded to show up late, or just not appear in stories at all.
Wow the crossover potential! Trainbot the Tank Engine, Horby electric Trans Set. Untapped potential!
I like how the trainbots had poetic names and the liner team has "Joe" and "Alan"
Atlan was a TGV Atlantique, which I think still holds a record for the fastest train in the world.
For a while the 500 Series Bullet Train, Nozomi (Railspike) was the fastest in Japan until just recently.
I personally am a little dumbfounded that they gave Transformers those soughts of human names, Alan especially.
@@SWDude2710 keep in mind that those names may have other meanings in Japanese. Also, remember that "Magnus" is both a Latin word and a (human) name. So is "Swindler".
@Quintesson05 makes sense. I'm not that knowledgeable on a lot of the Japanese Transformers content as I never grew up with it, so I appreciate your info on that regard.
@@SWDude2710I agree, I grew up with TRANSFORMERS CYBETRON and 2007 TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED
Honestly, trains are some of the coolest modes that transformers have. Imagine your a decepticon goon, a reflector of some kind and you see a bullet train barreling towards you and then it suddenly transforms and punches you back to cybertron
I like trains

The extra Trainbots in 8:32 are some of the most "we give this name to whatever character we feel like" names I've heard in a while. Seriously, Swindle, Tankor, and Overload were names that just got tossed around to _anything_ in the early-mid 2000s. (This was before Animated Swindle locked down the character's identity forever.)
They can keep throwing around Tankor. Anything to help folks forget about Beast Machines.
I don’t know why, but I love transforming trains. Whether it be Astrotrain, Hearts of Steel Optimus, or Shinkalion.
I can’t get enough
I agree. I like locomotives
Same as a former btw the hearts of steel line deserves more attention
I agree. I would love to see reissues of the G1 Trainbots. Unfortunately, I don't see any evidence of it ever happening.
I have a Facebook page that talks about train Transformers if you're interested in joining.
The "TRAINBOTS" were (and still are) among my most favorite TRANSFORMERS for three primary reasons :
1) They were trains
2) They were TRANSFORMERS
3) ALL SIX could combine together to form a super robot !
Amen brother
Same, and I'll take this one to the grave
I felt the same way about Team Bullet Train in 2000-2001. Even though the North American versions and their variants were released in 2001, I only got blue windowed Rapid Run and once I could afford it, a CarRobots JRX (Rail Racer) gift set. Getting them that way proved to be a good thing -- J-7's painted clear plastic wasn't very durable, and JRX looked better with the North American Rapid Run in the torso and backpack position.
They should have brought them to America anyway. they'd have been a perfect rival for Devastator.
@@Quintesson05I hope The Basics On Lugnutz will be uploaded soon
Being a massive Railfan, I know that trains were and still are popular in the United States. However, most of that popularity is toward steam locomotives, not electrics or diesels. When Generation 1 was on shelves, the only electric locomotives Americans cared about were the AEM-7 (also known as the toaster) and the GG1. When it came to diesels, Americans only really cared about EMD F and E units.
Considering that thousands of people of all ages line up next to the tracks to see a steam locomotive go by. If the team consisted of steam locomotives then they would have flown off the shelves here in the United States.
That's probably why Astrotrain was added to the American Transformers line, I would imagine.
That’s actually a really interest point I hadn’t thought about. Kinda makes me wonder if, at the core of the transforming robot craze itself, the existing popularity of toy and model cars wasn’t a key factor in the craze. Well, obviously the robot aspect was the main thing, but having them transform into recognizable vehicles that had already been made into toys would’ve been like… ahem… an upgrade
@@NihilisticBallmanprobably chose astrotrain to have a d51 because 1. japan origins? And 2. Steam locomotives are pretty much what you think of when you say “train”
the only two diseal that i hate from Thomas the tank engine and friends is diseal and diseal 10 both are true evil the only reason why
Trains aren't something we in America ride everyday like in some other countries, but little kids (i.e., the target audience for Transformer toys) love them. Tyco actually released a Transformers electric train set over here back in the 80s. They didn't turn into robots, but the cars did transform and actually went around their track like a regular electric train set.
11:50/11:53 What's funny about it for me is that two VA's from the CGI era of Thomas the Tank Engine got to voice Transformers from the 2014 Universe game (one of them was appropriately named Derail).
Really?! That’s Awesome!
Who were they, if you don’t mind me asking?
@@JLStudios Kerry Shale (the aforementioned Derail)
Glenn Wrage (Doubletake, Triage & Howire)
I was always curious why a transformer would transform into a train with no ability to actually control where they can go in vehicle mode, but I had this concept that on Cybertron that trainbots would be larger bots that are engines for large cargo transport.
I assume they can make their own rails if they need to. Project some kind of energy construct ahead of themselves maybe. They fly through space, after all
@@manjackson2772 they have rails in the storage that prime’s trailer is in
Being trains I thought if you can combine your combine form would be a lot bigger then the other combiners.
@@manjackson2772other Takara franchise the Brave Series would use that concept if I recall, heck one even rode through space on rails of light
@@Xeno-The-Wanderer That'd be Advenger from Gold Brave Goldran! He could fly, but the rail of light wasn't actually coming from him. On the other hand, Blue and Green Raker from Brave Exkaiser could create their own rails of light.
Very interesting thing about the rivalries, in Diaclone the Trainbots were rivals with the Constructicons, who they became rivals with the Dinobots, then for them being rivals with the Predacons only for them to become rivals with the Trainbots
Talk about full circle
Sky Linx also had some sort of rivalry with the Predacons. But he was a toy that couldn't be sold in Japan initially.
Yeah it would make more sense for them to be the opposites of the Constructicons given they were the only combiner teams with 6 members instead of 5 like the Scramble City Combiners. Unless you count the Seacons
It would be so awesome if we got the Trainbots in a live action movie or TV show where they play a significant role and we get to see them combine.
Now that's what I want to see in the live action films.
Agreed!
It would be cool to see a fight with them between devastator or astrotrain.
Man.. the Rail Racer team was my holy Grail toy as a kid. I remember having RID Prime and the only other set I wanted was the rail Racers so I could combine them. Such an underrated group.
Bro for real. It's still a grail item for me. I'm praying hasbro will make it in the legacy line. Hell we already got rid 2001 scourge and will be getting sideburn as well, just give us the other fan favorite team.
@purplewolfranger22 as much as i wish we would get them in an updated format, hasbro already said back after car robot ended in 2000 that because of poor sells they where never touching rail racer again so unless takara does something we are out of luck there sadly
@@Heroduothecomedian lets hope they change their mind or we get a 3rd party one

A shame these guys never came to the west. I love trains and seeing them would've easily made them up there as some of my top favourites.
The US train industry is on the rise, and honestly, for the better. They'll be cleaner than EVs for long distance travels.
#makehaslabraiden make it happen
In the West the love of trains is taken by Thomas and friends
In my Transformers roleplay, me and my friend have given the Trainbot Combiner team English-language names, and we've dubbed them Railbots and applied the Trainbot name to the 3-way Combiner Rail Racer.
Getsuei became Night Train. Kaen became Flamewheel. Seizan became Hiker. Suiken became Aquatrain. Yukikaze became Cold Wind. Shouki became Railblazer. And I've given their combined mode the name, Thunderrail.
Cringe
Sticking to the original name themes. I like the sound of em
Thanks.
I think they become more popular if they became the rivals to devastator, I mean, if they were willing to acknowledge another color scheme of the train bot Why can’t they knowledge that they and devastator are the only Dyclone combiner teams
They should be the rivals of Constructicons , they are the only two Six-bot combiner team for a long period.
Its surprising that trains aren't that common in the TF series. You'd think there'd be more, but no. Same goes with busses, and atm, I think Transit is the only one.
There's an obscure bus character from the marvel comic books.. somewhere I think
Don’t forget Omnibus from Tom Scioli’s Transformers vs GI Joe!
I think there's also Busby? His article is linked to Bendy-Bus Prime, which makes a whole _two_ more bus guys.

Whenever Chris starts talking about G1 continuation manga I can't help but laugh at the lengths it goes to just sell a few toys. Somehow they really do manage to capture the feeling of playing with Transformers as a kid and making up crazy storylines that build and build endlessly.
I've never understood how trains are thought not to be popular in the US... we all had model train sets at some point and there are model train shows... kids like trains... missed opportunity... if they argue we don't have bullet trains here, not all the vehicles from the original line were common in the US
It's the automotive industry. That's why we don't see general transport vehicles.
The passenger rail industry barely exists in the US. Unlike Europe or Japan, were Regional and high speed rail are just regular part of peoples lifes.
The us only really had cargo rail, which isn't exactly too visible.
@@GrandProtectorDark What? Kids love trains. This notion that American kids don't like trains because they don't often ride them is silly. Most kids never rode in a military fighter jet or a space shuttle, either, but they still sold Transformers that turned into those things. (They were still selling toy space shuttles even after the Challenger had exploded.) Tyco sold a Transformers electric train set in the US.
@@KasumiKenshirou I agree because I refuse to believe they didn't think kids would like trains as much in America. I mean that's like saying kids would not like the Astrotrain figure seeing as it has a train mode. If the kids can accept Astrotrain then it should have given Hasbro the reason to import the Trainbots.
Yes, and Astrotrain was a Japanese locomotive who made regular appearances in the original cartoon and was in two seasons. Steam locomotives were obsolete in the U.S. in 1985 except for excursion rides, but yet Astrotrain was still a popular figure.
In the US voice dub of Robots In Disguise, Railspike's voice actor was originally heard in the Robotech English dub by Harmony Gold.
The Trainbots were such a great idea. They should have been in the G1 cartoon. Along with Seacons.
The only thing I would like to have added is an Autobot combiner, that was composed of sea ships, like a submarine, aircraft carrier, naval ships, etc...
I would have 100% bought that.
The difficulty in using aquatic vessel is the scale …. People tend to forget just how big ships really are …
In G1 it was always absurd how small SeaSpray was…. Even in vehicle mode he was scaled to be the same size as his dune buggy brother when his vehicle mode is modeled after a specific type of hover craft that is nearly 60 feet long…. Now throw in submarines, battleships, and carriers???
Yeah. I'm surprised, as an Australian, that trains are such a limited part of the American experience. Popular culture, from Chattanooga Choo Choo to The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, would suggest otherwise, but I know such impressions are often skewed.

@@alanguages rather than triple changing between a carrier and a plane broadside should have been model between a flying boat, and a hydro foil
7:53/7:57 I know that Railspike was apparently a member of the Lost Light crew.
Ask Vector Prime would later explain his story in more detail.
For some reason, loads of japanese Sixtrain micromasters were going around my primary school in the early 90s... nobody ever got a full set somehow. I still have one...
I'm loving the train nerdery in the vid, all the serial numbers are delightful, even though trains aren't my focus of nerdery!
I used to live in Japan, and was there for quite a long time. But I didn't know that the various trainbots lines existed. I wish I did because since finding out, I've realised that I've actually travelled on several real trains represented by the various teams. It just goes to show how fantastic Japan's rail system is, that some of these locomotives can continue service for decades before being retired, and sometimes being retired just means being put on a small local line or service somewhere.
My mom brought me back the Train Robo set from Japan when she was there for my aunt's wedding way back in the day. I've loved those bots ever since and I was sure they were going to bring them to the US as Transformers since the Construction Robo set that my older brother got came out as the Constructicons. I was highly confused as to why they didn't.
I was recently back in Japan visiting my my family and I was excited to tell my aunt and cousin, while looking at the prototype Masterpiece Raiden, the story about how I got this set when she got married and that they're doing a remastered version (even if I think MPG Raiden's leg wings are eye murder).
Good in japan trains are loved
8:49/8:54 I know that Andrew Griffth wanted to include them in IDW's: Robots In Disguise series, serving their usual roles as Autobot transport.
I caught this on the Saturday night at TFN, and I’ll tell you, out of all the amazing things I got to do and see that weekend very few come close to watching my sister, who knows nothin’ about transformers and had just come along for fun, cheer and applaud when Alan and Joe came onscreen.
Haha, now that makes me happy to hear! 😁
THAT WAS THE BEST PART
Take a shot for every train pun and you'll be in the perfect state to try and watch TLK again
This was great! The shoutout to railfans at the end has made my day lol! Cool to hear train things on this channel as well, this is definitely my favorite basics video by far!
I love how many Japanese transformers are the elder/younger brother of someone else.
But... if SixTrain is the elder brother of SixLiner, then what is the relationship between each of the individual members and the members of the other combiner? Uncle? Cousin?
It's a good question, isn't it? 😆
To be brothers you have to have parents. How can robots have parents 😂
Maybe the sibling relationship is more metaphorical
@@alphatrion100 In the US toy commercial (and I think ONLY that toy commercial), Quickswitch is said to be Six Shot's son. So that concept is not unique to Japan. Weren't Sideswipe and Sunstreaker also brothers?
@@KasumiKenshirou

And do they have mothers? How about grandmothers? It's silly!
Let's also not forget that the first Transformer with a train mode of any kind was introduced in 1985, and it's all in his name, Astrotrain! My favorite of the Decepticons. Plus there's one half of Energon Omega Supreme and Titans Return Sentinel Prime. To be honest, I'd love more Transformers with train modes. They're even rarer than those with nautical vessel alt modes.
I’d love to see RID’01 Rail Racer make a comeback someday. Given how much screen time Team Bullet-Train had in the anime, Railspike, Rapid-Run and Midnight Express deserve to make a return someday.
I agree. If you're interested, I have a Facebook group that talks about Train Transformers.
I think Kaen is my favourite of the bunch. I tend to like freight diesels more than passenger ones and he has a very interesting shape to him; that masterpiece toy of him looks gorgeous.
Also not gonna lie, a minicon/partner that turns into a pantograph for Shouki is genius and a unique modern update on the powermaster concept.
No joke: Sixtrain is my favourite combiner, simply for being a train combiner (I didn't know enough about Raiden until now and I actually had the Sixtrain toy)
Trainbots & Seacons are most underrated combiner teams and would be perfect rivals.
Change my mind.
I would appreciate if you either made a video about either Ransack or Demolisher. Their history are something i really would love to see in one of your videos

I absolutely loved the train bots, thank you Chris ❤️ 😊
when you said "really useful engines" i got a blast from the past
Trainbots: Really useful engines
Astrotrain: Likes causing confusion and delay
When Takara quit doing Transformers and went into Brave for 10 years, trains - especially the Shinkansen bullet trains and older D5x series steam trains - were a popular motif, appearing either on their own or as part of a gestalt. The only overt Train one they did was Brave Express Might Gaine, although Exkaiser and Dagwon had 1 train-themed combiner each, and Goldran had Advenger running solo.
I was just researching them on the wiki last night.
So the combiner teams and their counters were:
Aerialbots = Stunticons
Protectobots = Combaticons
Technobots = Terrorcons
Omega Supreme = Constructicons
And Sky Lynx or Trainbots = Predacons
But no one to counter the Seacons? After Devastator, basically every set included one Autobot and one Decepticon combiner. Except the '88 set. But adding the Trainbots gives the Autobts an equal number of Combiners or Titan class robots.
Side note: what is it with Omega Supreme being reimagined as a City-class Titan, on par with Metroplex, Fort Max, Trypticon and Scorponok? This leaves Devastator without his counter, and an extra Autobot City-class.
I've never understood why they never imported the trains over here until the early 2000s. Trains and model railroading have always been popular in the United States. I even had the electric Transformers train when I was a kid and had to find another one recently. I can understand the bullet train designs not being popular here but steam locomotives and Diesel Freight locomotive are everywhere around here
I like the Thomas reference at the end.
Bots with train alt-modes are defiantly one of the most fascinating aspects of Japanese Transformers. Any chance we could get a basics on Universe 2003?
Western transformers names: Megatron, Shockwave, Ultra Magnus, Predaking, Fortress Maximus
Japanese transformers names: Raiden, Liokaiser, Star Saber, Victory Leo, Joe
I love that the Japanese names tend to be either EXTREMELY awesome or EXTREMELY plain hahaha
I love the idea of them being the counterparts of the Constructicons.
Choo choo
5:08 Best name in this franchise since Crazybolt and Bob the Insecticon.
FANTASTIC episode, as always! Also, you did a really great job pronouncing all of the train model and character names! A lot of those were a mouthful!
6:32 tell me I'm not the only one who pictured shockwave speeding through a dimensional rift, smacking the train bots, and dipping
I think the rift was retroactively described to be shockwaves fault as he killed cyclonus in the marvel UK stories
Also notable that To fill the 'train-mech' itch for Japan in the 1990's when transformers was either off the air or in the Beast Era, The Takara/Sunrise Coproduction Brave series had train combiners in several of their entries. Of largest fame being those from the Series "Brave Express Might Gaine", where all the hero units of the series either drew basis from Trains or had at least one of their alternate/combined modes converting into a train. They could also all combine into one LARGE Train for their team attack, the Joint Dragon Fire, where they just rammed through an enemy machine to defeat them. ruclips.net/video/1-wZZsMwVJQ/видео.html
Those are some really useful engines. Wish Hasbro embraced the trainbots more. They are some of the coolest figures

I’d just imagine a situation where there’s a trainbot riding around full of passengers, when suddenly it has to transform to fight some decepticons.
I could see them having Subspace generators, Ground Bridges and/or some form of emergency protocol if they get attacked by Decepticons
This happens multiple times in RiD2001. They just leave the people on the tracks, which must be very infuriating especially if you were supposed to get somewhere by a certain time,

Same here, but sadly I've watched reviews of every one if the masterpiece ones and it looks like the full combined mode will be an absolute clunky mess.
There's a third party of the trainbots that are really nice and I have 4 out of 6 of them that I'm still working on getting the last two.
Rail Racer is still my favorite, someone needs to do a masterpiece of it
Really looked forward to this episode, as I had the Universe incarnation of Rail Racer. Honestly, I want more rail inspired alt modes in this franchise.
I have very distinct memories for the RiD 2001 train bots. Where I live in Ohio, the show was aired on weekday mornings instead of afternoons, so I watched it before school on what ended up being 9/11. So they were on my mind when I was in art class and the school went into lockdown and had every teacher turn on the news.
I also remember being confused why they aired it two days in a row (since the Wednesday airing was the first airing in most of the country.
It's a nonstop trip to fun town! TRAINBOTS! and... FIRST!
OoH!
There was a lot of things I learned today! Thanks Chris!
