You are mostly correct on how it works, but it seems you don't quite understand the purpose of why they would do this. The purpose of using that sensor to sense the velocity (and not just position) of the driving motor. They use a concept called closed loop feedback control most likely, so that the position of your foot is directly proportional to the rate at which you are sewing. In 'control engineering' terms, you decrease the effective impedance of the whole system. To explain how this works, consider that the motor had no sensor or feedback, and your foot would be directly applying different voltage to the motor. If you now would load the output of the motor, the current would go up, and the speed would go down. So if you would be sewing through a thicker material, suddenly your sewing machine would slow down substantially. This is obviously undesirable. By sensing the velocity of the motor with a little computer, and adjusting the voltage/current to the motor, you effectively try to counter the decrease in speed because of the higher load. In short, this feedback makes it possible for a smaller motor to feel comparable to a large motor that just wouldn't be bogged down as much by higher loads. On 8:35 you might have misspoken yourself. The gear on the motor is not high torque, it is high speed. I think in general the best way of thinking about this stuff is not in torque/velocity, but as power. The power stays almost constant (minus some friction losses). Power is simply the product of torque and velocity, and what the belt + pulleys do, is merely act as a transformer. A certain power (small torque x high velocity) goes in, and at the large gear the same power comes out (but, high torque x low velocity). Intuitively it makes sense, as the small gear has to turn a lot of times before the large gear turns even once. Edit: Never mind seems you understand it correctly at 10:48. I definitely do agree with you that good quality polymers and plastics can be as good or better than metals, especially crappy pot aluminum and iron which shatters very quickly. 11:47 That belt is called a timing belt as well. Or more accurately, they are called "HTD belts". I also think those plastic gears matter a lot less, since they have to transmit not nearly the same amount of torque as the main shaft, of which the needle has to punch through the material. 14:18 It could be they are also doing some smart sensing, and just using those bigger indexes just to orient initially, and then use the sensor on the motor as finer control, as the motor turns a lot of times before the main shaft turns once. 15:26 Interestingly, this board seems to be an off the shelve product manufactured by delta. Delta is more commonly known for providing power-supply units and fans for industrial equipment. I wasn't aware they made control boards like this, and I am also surprised that Janome didn't design their own boards.

How in the world do I get the side cover off My memory Craft 8000? It just stopped running like it had no power. The thread said that it has a fuse in it near the on/off switch. Does it?

I think the main motor is not a cheap motor controlled by electronics as you said, it is a high-efficiency brushless motor that has high torque (even on slow rpm) than other types of motors. Thanks
Correct, today's brushless motors can pack a punch vs old brush motors! Learned this with new cordless drills. The friction/drag caused by old brushes rubbing hard inside is gone allowing more direct power & it takes less energy to power brushless. One can't see this by looking at the case so its easy to dismiss this upgrade. I'd like to know the new/old motors hp/torque ratings. My bet is they're close to equal if not better today. Clearly last longer now.
A brushless motor would have three phases going to it, an an inverter with 6 mosfets driving it. For stable low-rev operation it would also have a magnetic encoder, not an optical one (because the magnetic encoder gives you position, and the optical only gives you rotational speed). There is no sign of any of these, so it's just a cheap universal or DC motor with an optical encoder to control speed.
I absolutely agree with you that today plastic is more robust and does not easily break down or crack. However, there could be other reasons for plastic gear breakdown, such as rubbing against a tough material (metal or another plastic gear) or gear misalignment. What Janome has done, i.e., to use plastic gears against belts is actually the total cure for them. Nothing is needed. It will last forever.
my janome ss2015 stitch selector gear is broken. fo you think that is easily sourced and replaced? I looked inside and noticed a split hence why it was lose and not meshing with the bigger one to select stitches...I am on permanent straight stitch

At first I was thinking “stop first? These people are weird” and then it occurred to me I have had to buy 3 sewing machines in two years so long story short I’m the problem. 😂😂 it’s me. I’d never thought about the stress that could put on the machine and I am going to try and be mindful to stop then reverse. Thanks for mentioning that. ❤
I am attempting to make my own hat, I only need a couple stitches and I was wondering if you would do a side by side of the singer Harvey duty and the janome hd1000, I am trying to get through a plastic brim and while the singer heavy duty does get through, I’d like to know if the janome is any better, otherwise I’ll be going up to a industrial

I searched and asked a Janome dealer giving them the model number etc. I have a Janome MemoryCraft 5500 and they said they never made it. Do you think this is true? I’ve sewn with this machine for more than 30 years....baby clothes to quilts, never a problem. Do you know when this machine was manufactured?
You must not have looked very hard. Light bulbs are common things. Even Amazon sells sewing machine light bulbs. There are now LED replacements for the older incandescent bulbs of the past. Take the light bulb out so you know the socket type/size and wattage to go shopping.
Can you make a video on what the difference between a Heavy Duty Sewing machine (like a heavy duty singer sewing machine) and an Industrial machine are. I want to get an industrial sewing machine but it seems like the singer heavy duty sewing machine is just as good. What would you recommend?

Full metal mechanical bodied machines are more durable especially when it comes to sewing leather, juki’s, the older singers and older BERNINA’s, sew thru leather like butter as they have metal gears and their motors have a decent torque compared to the others

I'm not sure on the plastic needle plate is there a small screw on the right or is that a empty hole with threads... I'm not sure
I think the empty hole is there for adding some type of accessory? Maybe a guide bar? I have it on mine too and am curious

Some bacteria eat oil and plastic. Maybe old plastic taste better? Non eatable oil might be substance which reduce that?
