Hi there in the late 60s and early 70s I built VW dune buggies it was also found that on the distributer Vaccum plate and all moving parts of the weights for advance did much better with light 3 in 1 oil or Singer sewing oil but no grease! I cleaned & or added one drop at 6 months to a year. I had enough power to do wheel stands on cement. with 14.25"cut out of the floor pan & polished duel port heads with weber carbs. we used drills & reamers for new brass throttle shaft bushings. We had hand pin reamers for jets. also fine stainless sceen under the carbs.when it was a warm time of the year! gasoline does not burn! Gas does. we did not know or even try a turbo! Empi was big & good for parts. Nick Wiese
Thank You for your input Mr. Wiese. The air cooled VW seems to have come back to life and the VW community needs to learn how to think out of the box again instead of having everything handed to them ready to go. Todays fuel adds to the challenge. Feel free to make comments on any of my vids I appreciate you taking the time to help my viewers.
You're most welcome, just wish I could fine someone as knowledgeable as you are on the DHLA-40 and maybe offer me some suggestions. Regards, and keep up the great videos.
Thank you for uploading this vid sir. And greetings from finland. I am building an 1900cc engine whit a blower by my self, and i have calculate than 35 chokes whit a 145 or 150 main jets should do it (iam using dual system whit 40 sized bodys) but the big problem seem to be that i dont have a knowledge to choose all other jets. none of my friends cant realy help me, cause its feels like nobody wouldnt build cars whit carbs at these days :(
Amazing video! Thank you for putting the time and effort into shearing your knowledge with us. I'm currently installing x2 40 dcoe Weber carbs into my 82' E21. It's a 4 cylinder 1.8 - I'm also having extractors and a new cam installed, would you say this would give my car a decent power increase? Cheers.
Sounds bad A$$ You can still buy some parts new from CB Performance. Gaskets, accelerator pumps, jets, and air cleaners. Good luck with your project hope it turns out the way you like. I don't have any experience with those horizontal Delloroto's
Hey E-Z...what dell'orto's would you recommend for Norton 850? ['74]......and I mean big honkin dual outboards, with velocity stacks beside gas tanks...thx C.
My preferance would be Dual Dellort 36 DRLA, Dual Weber 40 IDF, Dual Kadron 40/44, Dual single 34 your choice. I'm sure you have other options but those would be my advice in that order. Don't price shop. Get the best you can and take care of them. They will last you a very long time. I have been running the same 36 dellorto's for going on 20+ years Just ran up 100 miles today on the 1776 Baja
Hi I have a 2.3l type 4 engine that I want to put in my bay window bus. I have a pair of 36 Dellorto carbs. Could they be set up for this engine or are they too small?
What do you think about the d-series carbs by empi? They appear to be very similar to the dellortos with a few differences. I've had good luck with the empi carbs. I wonder if the delordo parts are interchangeable with the D series?
Car Craft carry's them. They sound great and I was excited. Somebody told me the Samba crybaby's were complaining about misalignment of the progression holes????? I really like my dells and I do believe they are interchangeable in some area's like jets
Hey there ezgz, because of your knowledge on these carbs i watch your videos on weber/dellorto carbs because i just think they look awesome on a bike, and on any engine for that matter, i have two projects in the near future using dellorto DHLA and a weber DCOE. i want to with the help of some fabrication guys, put a sidedraft dellorto on a ducati motorcycle which is 944cc, to my knowledge know one has done this, custom manifolds will be made for each bike. the other project is to put a weber or dellorto downdraft carb on my sportster 1200, i believe a 40 may be too big for a stock sportster 1200 im not really sure, but i believe anything smaller from 28-36 should work for either the 944cc ducati or the 1200cc sportster. i have seen webers on harley's before but not on a ducati, so if that can work, it will be a first. I have a chance of obtaining a chrome weber downdraft 48, can i install smaller venturi's in this carb? Hope to hear from you soon.
As long as it's Port on port like your planning I think it will work. Over 500 cc per cylinder is really big. I think that the 40 might be to small but you won't know until you try it. It should idle and run good around town though. www.dellortoshop.com/index.html Hear is another parts source www.cbperformance.com/Carburetors-Accessories-s/21.htm
Thanks EZGZ for your quick reply, you mentions briefly about Port to Port, im not really sure what you mean by that, do you mean each throat must have its own cylinder to service? also thanks for the links you provided, i shall be contacting them. Guys like you are become more rare. by the way the two projects will be street bikes and not racers. Thanks EZGZ
No, but I sure thought about it when I had mine. I'm not sure you would have adequate fuel pressure by gravity. You might have to have a fuel pump with a DRLA style carb. Space is always a problem.
Hello, i have a 1914 with dual DRLA 40's. it sat for a good bit and the Carbs "Locked Up" throttles would not open. i am tearing them down now and i was able to get one moving and got the throttle valves out. So i can press the shaft out to replace the bearings etc. The other one is stuck, with a capital STUCK. the shaft is starting to twist where one side is trying to turn but the other is holding fast. i have nearly every thing but heat to try to get it to loosen up. Do you have any ideas? thanks Jerry

Benoit - Poulin You do not need the velocity stacks to run properly. You have a GREAT set up. Two 40 IDF weber carbs set up and working properly will run any size VW engine very nice and get good economy. 28 venturi's, 55 idle jets, 125 main jets. fuel pressure must be below 3 PSI use a regulator and buy a gauge. Just built 2110 type I with a single DRLA36; ventri 28, mains 135, pump jets 55 and .2 air correction. Eagle 110 cam with ratio rocker arms 1:1.25. Per the graph in the book going to venti 30 or 32. My driving is off road rock sand rail need low end and high end power. I have Rev. limiter at 4800 rpm and stay just blow that on long hill climbs. Question would you pick the 32mm ventri? Also have hesitation problem. I think pump jet problem. It should be a squirt not a weak stream? How long should the pump jet add fuel. 0-1/2 or 0- to full throttle? Any help on jets?? I want to setup once and go have fun??

Cool thanks so much your video is great. Going to keep the rockers ( we do a lot of long hill climbs where I'm wide open and sand). Cleaned out pump jets like you said and and replaced o-rings and stumble problem reduced by 96%. Ordered new springs (diaphragm and on on the adjustment rod). Would be going to fuel injection once a get major $$ saved. With 28mm Venti should I go down to 115 mains (Have 135's now). Thanks for the help
I just bought a update kit for my 45 dells. Very well, made and very complete. The barrels slide right in a perfect fit. It's really hard to get the stock ones out. I used a little heat and lot's of WD40 . They carbs came on my sandrail and I took them off and used my 36 DRLA on my 2276 engine instead because I wanted more low speed driveability and better fuel mileage. I will post up a vid and test them 2 or 3 months from now. From the looks of it I'm sure they would make a good choice for a drag car. Not sure for a daily driver. Hope this info helps
ok EzGZ I got a 1500cc Volkswagen somebody's done engine work to. sounds like it's got mild or little bit bigger cam, it's got a dellorto 36 on it runs great until 3 you can fell it start to fall off then really bad in 4th gear, starts to bog down and seems like running real lean... what is your suggestion on this I've checked all the Jets everything is clean. Pulled all the plugs and they are a little white on everyone, which is lean someone just rebuilt the carburetor that I bought it from.
Check the fuel inlet pressure going into the carb. Should be about 3psi or less. Make sure your fuel line is not pinched or restricted in any way. If that is good check your float level. Top of the float should be level with bottom of carb when held upright and it is tricky. The needle itself moves inside a sleeve. It is when the needle stops moving up that the valve is closed and this is where you level things. When you take off the top of the carb there should be fuel just over that shelf on the right side. Also make sure your spark timing is advancing correctly. No more that 34 degrees total advance. All this is in the dellorto book and you should get one. It is very difficult to tune a single centermount carb compared to a dual carb setup. www.cbperformance.com/CB-Tech-Books-s/303.htm
@@TheEZGZ it's got all new plugs all new wires cap and electronic distributor, all brand new fuel lines nothing's clogged. I went through the carburetor looked at it it's all clean the floats were right.. so you know what kind of guy I am I built tons and tons of hot rods and everything it's not that I don't know what I'm doing I just don't know nothing about these crabs.... timing set at 32 degrees..
Dear Bobby, YOU are overlooking something..... I can't be at your side. Don't be one of those guys that is frustrated and says blah blah I checked everything. 3kRPM you should be well into the main jets. You didn't mention anything about stumble on the way there when your starting out. You did not reply back with info I gave you. I doubt you removed the top of the carb and looked inside after you read my reply. What is your fuel pressure and flow. Just because you have new parts doesn't mean everything is working correctly. There is a fuel inlet screen where the fuel line connects to the carb. CHECK IT. That carb was designed to be run port on port with a small fiat engine. Even though it looks bigger than a stock solex carb it was not designed to flow the amount of fuel you ask of it. You also said you THOUGHT it had a performance cam but your working with an unknown engine because you didn't build it. You really need to get that dellorto book. It explains dual and single carb set up. Here is another link that will take you to a weber carb jet chart. scroll down and look at the weber IDF 40 and study the difference between single and dual carb jetting on the chart. BIG difference and you don't have a good baseline of somebody else drilling out the jets. Bolting on a carb that was set up for dual carb use and using it for a single carb will NOT work. I hope you get it working and please tell me what changes you made. Do not give up on that carb set-up it should work very well. By the way. VW never made a 1500 with dual port heads and nobody ever made a single port manifold for a dual throat carb. You can't go by the serial number on the engine unless you know it is stock. Also you can't get a seal if you use a dual port 1600 head on 1500 size cylinder. If it were me I would spend $20 for a new gasket set and take that engine completely apart and see what I had. But thats just me. I can't stand not knowing exactly what I have.
@@TheEZGZ hi. I have took the top of the carb off gas was right at the step like in your vidoe.. there has not been any stumble at till I got it 3/4 or more throttle. Then starts popping goes like hell till then.. I also look at the screen its clean. I dont know about the fuel pressures yet. The valve are at .oo6 compressor on both cylinders on passengers side 125psi the cylinders on the driver side are.. 85 little less which throw me off.. the main jets are 162. The pilots are 09.. I'm really thinking just taking the motor down seeing what's what.. btw I look up the the chart for the series number stamp in front of it H it said it's a 1500cc but now I want to know what it is.. iv tons of motor never really mess with vw motor.. if seen your videos what do you suggest by the info I have you here..?
Hi the EZGZ , i have DRLA 40 , the size main venturi are 32mm but i want to know if this venturis should get adjusted? and i can change for more size like 36mm? thank from Costa Rica!
Hello Josef, Do not go larger than 34 on main venturi if you are going to drive it a lot on the street.daily. It will idle ok and run wide open but you will hate the mid range and starting out. I run dual DRLA 36 with 30 MM venture on my 2110 and still get 5, 500 RPM . Tuning and driving is great and get 25 MPG.
TheEZGZ thank you, excellent suggestion. I see the main venturi is introduced into the carburetor throat with ease of movement. The next question is, the main venturi should be adjusted to the walls inside the carburetor? or is it not necessary? thank!
Josef Ramos You order the different venturis for your model carb and it will come with correct outside diameter. Weber venturi's will not work in a DRLA nor will the jets. DRLA parts are available from www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=0101 BUY THIS BOOK AND ALSO PARTS YOU NEED.

The valve are at .oo6 compressor on both cylinders on passengers side 125psi the cylinders on the driver side are.. 85 little less which throw me off.. the main jets are 162. The pilots are 09.. I'm really thinking just taking the motor down seeing what's what.. btw I look up the the chart for the series number stamp in front of it H it said it's a 1500cc but now I want to know what it is.. iv tons of motor never really mess with vw motor.. if seen your videos what do you suggest by the info I have you here..?
what carb do you thank i need for a 1776 with a eagle 110 cam
110 is mild/wild camshaft 284 and . 430 L duals are nice more bother singles are cost effective , but better fuels are at best.
TheEZGZ thanks for all!!
excellent comments!!
