What I love about the Arthas story, is that it isn’t unique in WHAT it is, but HOW it was written.
It uses familiar tropes, but they feel believable and not very contrived. Any one of us could have done what he did faced with the same circumstances, and walked the path he did.

Such a compellingly tragic story - the idea that "the right thing" can feel so clear to you: like a mirage of righteousness in dark times... you're so certain that the grim duty is a necessary evil... But the closer you get to fulfilling your goals, the clearer it all becomes and the less you even care. Somewhere along the way you've given everything you wanted to protect - you've torn it all to bits and damned yourself and everyone you love. You've become exactly what you sought to destroy.

That pure intent was of course as was stated ingame till he picked up the sword.
It was then when he lost his soul and himself. Including his desire to protect his homeland and those he loved.
He basicly became its own entity. The rest of humanity he had this entity also removed as stated in the book.
So you have your stereotypical holy hero. Prince and protector of Lordaeron whos love to his land was abused by a manipulative demon, a absolutely sinnister cult and a tormented spirit in a set of armor.
Lured on a path where hed lose all support, and had to make very hard choices. Like lesser evil by culling Stratholme before they overun the entire nation and turn everyone to zombies.
But killing his people even if booth out of mercy and nercecity pmus the destruction and mitation of an entire major city populstion. And the demon laughing in your face for it caused him to be consumed by rage and vengence.
Then lured in northrend he is purposely put in another orchestred situstion with Frostmourne "conviniently," nearby to safe them all.
Only as he was ready to bear qny curse to safe his peopöe he lost that very soul and self that had that good heart and intent.
The soulless puppet then becoming self aware and taking over all who tried to use him. And thats how the Lich King Arthas we know and love was born.
Only when Frostmourne was shattered and the helm left his head could his soul return as a emotional Arthas asked "Is it over?"
I think the gravity of the downfall and outright loss of all you are is what makes this story unique.
You have many similar stories bjt they are often more an actual descent like Anakin becoming Vader.
Arthas allthou more reckless was still an Anti hero before he picked up Frostmourne. Then it was as if all his hood safe for a tiny bit was stuck in the sword.
Afterall why would he gain grey skin and white hair if he never died? Or was never corrupted in any form? Why kill his father? Anakin would have never killed his mother.
Or his Kingdom? So id say Arthas was extra tragic.
It just bothers me how they suddenly make it look like he did all his dessisions willingly and is fully to blame for everything.

Truth be told, if the writers had any gravitas and the script had any kind of cohesion for someone who didn't play all Warcrafts and then moved to WoW, then we could end up having all the stories we wanted be told. The problem is that WC1 had not very many tidbits of lore, WC2 did a bit better and finally with WC3+ we ended up having a full cohesive story. I mean, all we can say for WC1 was "hurr durr orcs from black morass". They tried to expand a bit on that but they should have done it in an organic way and always by being in thrall (pun intended) of the established lore, books, game manuals, game mini texts, what have you.

This reminds me of an interview with the music producer of FF7 Remake. They asked him about how he went about remaking One-Winged Angel (the song when you fight sephiroth for those under a rock) and he answered that it was a very difficult process because he wanted to preserve all the good parts that he loved and made it a masterpiece in the first place, while adding or rearranging parts of it in order to make it distinct from the original. The reverence he had for the source material ended up allowing him to make an amazing recreation while still having all the characteristics of the original, and that is what a lot of western and some eastern teams are missing.

I think he would make a great Arthas and it would be interesting to see him play that hero falling to the "dark side". He would really put a lot of love in the job. But we would need a real director for that trilogy, not a basic hollywood yes-man. Because i really think such a project could be the new "lotr" cinema trilogy that we need, but the hands of the wrong person, it can be a disaster.

A trilogy of Arthas is like a no brainer to me.
Part 1 could be childhood + adulthood until he becomes a full realized paladin.
Part 2 could dive into the moral ambiguity of when you are going too far for the greater good and ending the movie with the Culling of Strathome.
Part 3 would be about the Northrend campaign and how Arthas gradualy isolates himself and ultimately loses his mind when killing Malganis. The movie and trilogy ends with a recreation of the WC3 cinematic of him killing the king and destroying Lortheron.
And Henry Cavill as Arthas please. The guy almost lost an audition because he was too busy wow raiding ffs. If anyone can makes Arthas justice is him.

The second Warcraft film should be about Arthas, Uther and Jaina. It should include the Scourge, Strathlome, etc. It should also end with Arthas ascending the throne and placing the Helm on his head.
The third film should start with Arthas waking up on the throne, just like in the original wrath trailer. I want to see some death knight stuff with Darion, Wrathgate etc. The ending fight should be Arthas and Tirion 1v1'ing on top of Icecrown.

the thing is Even people who know the lore of wc1 were diaappointed. hell they changed Garona from a half orc half draenei to a half orc half human despite the fact that orcs came through the dark portal 5 minutes ago. They made Llane die at the dark portal for who knows what reason, Blackhand got killed by Lothar for who knows what reason, Durotan got killed by Gul'dan for who knows what reason. They chose to not appease either fans or non-fans because people unfamiliar to wow had no idea who most of the characters were, and the people who did were like "wait this is different in the lore".
What they did with the movie is like imagining if Instead of Arthas doing the Culling of Stratholme, he was framed for it by the true mastermind Muradin Bronzebeard who secretly hates the humans and leads Arthas to Frostmourne so he ruins the human kingdoms so Ironforge may take over.

If the story of Arthas was adapted, odds are the people writing would completely miss the point: They'd probably would make him cartoonishly short-sighted, arrogant, narcissistic, selfish, and practically evil from the start; when he was driven by selflessness to a fault. They'd probably make Arthas gleeful at finding Frostmourne as well.
Course in my head ideally the first movie would frame Arthas as the hero even till the last scene, with him being welcomed home as the Hero who avenged his people and destroyed the demon at the source of the scourge. The post-credit scene would be him walking up to the throne room and kneeling to his father, but cutting out the part where he kills him so that people who do not know the story will think the first arc was played completely straight till the next movie.

I guess it depends on how many main characters you have and from how many points of view. But you'd have to do it from Arthas PoV, Thrall PoV, Malfurion Tyrande and Illidan PoV, Tirion PoV, Varian PoV. and that's a lot of PoVs to cover in a movie. That more sounds super greedy to make as much money as possible, you know like those fuckers who take a book that is barely enough for 1 movie and make 2-3 out of it...
You got enough story when you do Arthas -> Lich King in one movie. And then another with his fall - what should include his fate when he was condemned by his teacher he had murdered - and end as a weapon himself.
Should not even go to the point in which the last bit of his soul fades, because at this point he's alread gone anyway, as it was said, it's just a last fragment and flicker of his spiriti, not himself and it's the story of other peopel, even though interlinked, but the way there would too complex to just squeeze in.
For Arthas his story ends when he is grabbed by his former teacher, now an angel of death and just thrown in (hateful?) revenge into hell, where he is tortured to death and forged into a blade. That would work well as movie, because you would have those two blades. One which started his story and downfall - and one that makes his end.
Even for people who don't know the whole background it would be obvious enough, especially since you would need Nerzhul somewhere in the first part and should show how he was also forged into a weapon.
You could add Zovaal to it when Kingsmourne is forged, that he won't make the mistake his minions did, by letting any own will alive in the blade...
It's the best Arthas can hope for after all he had done, to be seen as a victim, too , beside being an HItler of the Undead.

Then the next one is his his descent into madness and what leads to his death. If there was a third they probably wouldn’t do well. Honestly would be great as a series and they’d definitely make their money back off of it. Season one basically what I said for the first movie. Using more time to build characters and shit. Arthas is a kid who was unlucky and weak enough to fall for temptation and manipulation, leading him onto a path of (self)destruction.

To be fair, the writers for GoT did stick pretty close to the established writing, but only up to the point where there was writing. The mistake with GoT was threefold: They should've waited for George R. R. Martin to finish writing the damn thing to begin with. That was the first mistake. The second mistake was continuing past the finished works that Martin had put out. They should've put the whole damn thing on hold, or better yet, refer back to mistake #1. Their third mistake was trying to rush the end of the series so they could work on other projects instead. Never rush anything, especially if you're trying to land a new gig afterwards (star wars). They ended up ruining GoT for everyone, and lost out on their aims of going over to write for Disney's Star Wars. The latter im not sure if thats a good or a bad thing considering Disney's track record has only one win (at the time), and its Rogue One, which retconned Kyle Katarn lmao...

The SW survivors fleeing to the Eastern Kingdoms and forming a new alliance against the desperate onslaught. Horde arrives on eastern kingdom shores and a massive and brutal battle is fought. Orgrim Doomhammer smashes Uther the Lightbringer's head in and the Alliance barely prevails. It's epic stuff.

The issue is that for some reason the studio don't want to continue with the Warcraft movies. The director does, many of the actors did want to as well. The movie made alot of money, just not in the US. It was a huuuuge hit in China. Absolutely, huge. It made 439 mil dollars and cost 160 mil to make. That's not a break even movie that is a successful movie.
Warcraft was fine for what it was. It was WC 1, could have beutifully lead into WC2. You had Doomhammer, Gul'dan, Garona, Lothar and Khadgar well established after the first movie. You had backstories now, it would have been easy to continue and make a second one with hints of a scourge towards the end, end credits on grainboxes with the Lordareon seal tinted green and a sound of a buzz as they are being loaded off a cart, have a third one with basically WC3 but more focused on the lich king stuff and end with Arthas ascending the Icecrown Citadel, then have a final movie about his downfall. Could have even stretched it for an additional movie with all the stuff around WC3 and TFT etc.
We could have been well into it. But noooo

Warcraft should be a TV series, from War of the Ancients, the Black Empire, and so on and so forth.
