As a Canadian this is a good thing. Canada needs to trade less with the USA and more with eu and asia. Better that we diversify.

To fellow Canadians: There have been reports of sales reps visiting Canadian appliance stores and taking off Made in U.S.A labels from their products. If you are shopping and you're unsure where the product is made, ask. Buy Canadian; if you can't find a Canadian alternative, go for the Korean, Japanese or European option. If it's American made, leave it on the self.

As a Canadian it is very simple for me. I have cancelled my travel plans down south, I no longer visit American owned restaurants here, I avoid where at all possible an American product for which there is a Canadian equivalent. I'm not at war with the U.S., but my allegiance is to my own country and as long as my country is being unfairly attacked, even if by a close friend, I will stand by its side and defend its interest for myself and future generations.

Trump started it. As a Canadian I am glad we are standing up to him. Trump is so clueless on how trade works. I do feel sad for the American workers this will effect. Trump needs to focus on the countries who are harming the US trade wise not the it friends. Trump also complains about Canada for helping it dairy industry but the US does it as well.Funny Trump does not mention that when he whines.

    • @11aaf

Trudeau started the strife with Trump when he went whining on TV about his meeting with Trump, immediately after shaking hands with Trump, and Trump left on Air Force One. With the handshake and cordial reactions, Trudeau made Trump think everything was alright.

The US is already bankrupt and Trump is going to get the blame for it and there is a great deal more to all of this than what we are being told. Trump is in grave trouble with Putin and other shady and evil leaders like himself. Putin has the goods on him to take him down and throw him in prison. Putin knows a lot of things and is not a former KJB agent for nothing.

Darwins Myth there are no Canadian tarrifs on goods produced in Canada by US owned companies. Canadian tarrifs on US goods are placed on specific goods produced in US imported into Canada. Besides that, why would a US company leave when our dollar and labor is cheap?

    • @TheJules1003
      @TheJules1003 6 лет назад +1

My daughter was just in my room a while ago talking about that we will not be affected by the tariffs since we don't consume Yankee garbage. We have our own water (plenty of it) as well as electricity and we have plenty of oil once Trudy gets his head on straight on putting the pipes back in the soil again. We can produce our own things when we want. I can sew and quilt and knit and many other things and don't need any Yankee Doodle garbage at all.

So don't take the insults supposedly coming from Canada to the US or the US to Canada very seriously. A few are genuine but most are just trolls from elsewhere who get their kicks trying to stir up trouble between two very old friends.
And for the serious trolls from our two countries: Grow up and button your lip unless you have something relevant and helpful to say. We can dig a big hole and think there will be no price to pay, but a brother lost is very hard to win back. And that IS a big price to pay!

@Base Man -Year 1939, Canada calls USA [White House]; so we declared War on Germany they just invaded Poland. USA, "call us back". Year 1940, Canada calls USA again. France has just been Invaded by Germany, are you in or out? USA "call us back" Year 1941, Canada calls USA for the last time. England is under attack and is being bombed, and are about to be invaded; you in or out? USA again. "Call us back". [] Canada replies. Hey USA, we kicked Germany's ass all over Europe during WW1, we're tired of waiting for your ass; we'll go it alone... and Canada continues to fight the German's and Canada bring endless supply of Canadian Troops [1Million men] ships of Petrol, ammo, weapons, clothing and food rations to Europe ,England and France's underground movement. months go by, and a news report hits the airwaves, Japan has attacked USA's Pearl Harbor. Later that day,The phone rings at the Prime Minister's residents in Ottawa, Hello Canada it's USA; can we join the War. [] USA doesn't need to protect Canada from anyone, we protect ourselves; and we fight for ourselves and we stand with our allies when they need us. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!! So tell me who the FUCK!! Is America protecting Canada from, no one!! Even if you did, you'd just show up 2years late and then take credit that you didn't earn for things you didn't do. America didn't join WW2, America was drawn into the War. FYI, Canada had 400 Nuclear Weapons which was the largest stock pile behind USA and Russia. After Canada, disarmed in 1984; America and Russia followed suit and reduced there active stock piles by 90%. So Canada took the lead and did something that actual protected America by making the World a safer place to live. Go figure!!

First, Americans have been (since the end of Bretton Woods) at a disadvantage in trade because the American dollar, being the international reserve currency, is always overvalued. Second, "free trade" only works where countries can exchange those goods they can produce most economically. It's not meant to be a head to head fight over producing the same goods. Therefore, if Canada and the US want to produce the same goods and sell them to each other, like steel, aluminum, autos, etc., then there's no point trying to get a free trade agreement. That will never work.

Onion pealing is getting deeper understanding of a subject. I like pealing onions.
And international trade is a onion that needs to be pealed.
    The USA-Canada dairy trade issues.
    The facts:
1/ the most recent trade data I can find 2016 ( so far ) is that Canada imported C$969.4 million of dairy products of which $512 came from the USA.
2/ at the same time Canada exported C$235.3 million of which C$116 million went to the USA.
3/ Canada has a net dairy trade deficit of $734million, and a net dairy trade deficit with the USA of C$396 million.
So based on that it Is Canada that should be Upset. Note that this trade imbalance happens when Canada has imposed 270% to 300% tariff on imports. From all countries. Not just the USA.
So why is this so important to the USA dairy industry?
3 Factors come to play. First the global over supply of dairy products has been getting worse every year. Two important players; European Union, Who protects their farmers from the market glut by increasing inventories of skim milk powder. Which in turn is encourage’s more dairy production. The USA is second contributor the global over supply. However lately they have slowed/ stopped adding to the skim milk powder reserve.
Now combine this with the US$20billion in farm subsidies that is paid out to farmers in the USA. The EU does this as well. The USA government actually pays farmers to dump milk in fields. This is not the only source of aid USA farmers get. So why would the USA dairy industry want to manage the supply of milk when they get paid regardless of how much they can sell.
The Canadian dairy farmer sells milk to make money and in a managed supply structure, guess what, they get a fair price for their milk. Canadian Dairy farmers do not get government subsidies.
So the problem is the USA dairy industry has overgrown the market. As everyone else has except Canada apparently. So what are they going to do? They look around for a market for their milk. I would if I was them. Now the closest market to the big dairy states is.... yah Canada. But wait they have all those tariffs to protect the Canadian Dairy industry. Not Fair they cry. Not fair trade.
So when a county has a over supply and wants to ... well dump it somewhere where the price is still great... well that’s not likely to work well with the local folks. In this case The Canadian Dairy Farmer.
In another case it is the USA STEEL Workers complaint about cheep China Steel.
I have to say this ... the IRONY is strikingly painful.
So I said 3 factors. The first is the over supply, the second is the continued growth in an over supplied market. So now for the final factor.
Russia invaded Crimea, Russia was a huge export market for EU dairy as well as USA and other exporters. I said was. They where hit with huge trade embargoes, which includes ... Dairy!
So the Canadian dairy farmer/ industry who have managed a supply = demand market, already faced with a huge and growing trade imbalances in dairy, with the USA as the major player, now face a dairy industry dumping from all over the world, not just the USA, even with high tariffs. Our Farmers are not happy!
Let’s go back to that 5 times trade imbalances of USA trade surplus with Canada in the dairy market. Why can’t Canada increase their sales of dairy to the USA?
Well the USA has a form of supply/trade management, in the form of import quotas on dairy. All imports are limited to 3% of the total market. In other words the Canadian dairy farmer can’t because the quota has been reached.
Tariffs are just one tool government use to protect their industries. They can use quotas, subsidies, inspection requirements.
    So who’s right?
One more fact. The USA over supply could wipe out the Canadian dairy industry in very short time. Even shorter time with the EU dumping as well.
    Let’s recap
Canada is in a dairy trade deficit with the USA and the rest of the world. ( I think it is the largest contribution to the over all trade deficit with the USA, I need to verify the source).
Canada has a managed dairy market to protect farmers from price erosion and allow them to make a fair income.
There is a glut of dairy capacity in the rest of the world that is not being managed well. In the case of the EU miss managed might be correct.
Does Canada have the right to protect a key component of our food supply?
I think yes we do have that right. Why should the Canadian industry suffer for the rest of the worlds over supply?
BTW - this happened before... in the 60’s. And that’s why we went to a managed market.
Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me.
So now for some tit for tat. The USA tariffs on tobacco is guess what 300%. Whipped out an entire Ontario industry.
Wonder what they are complaining about? Maybe we should raise the dairy tariffs in Canada to 500%

I don't think you understand this at all. Canada doesn't try to sell milk to america...... The american government gives the dairy industry heavily subsidies so that american produces make more milk than they can sell, so they have excess that they want to dump in canada. The canadian dairy industry is designed to produce as much milk as canada needs, and no more. It is not designed for export.
There is a reason why america has a trade surplus with canada on dairy despite the tariff. Canada simply isn't trying to sell milk to the usa.

    • @EM-lc6mm
      @EM-lc6mm 6 лет назад +5

glenn yoder - The reason is North American auto manufacturing has a complex manufacturing supply chain. A car assembled in one country may be using an engine assembled in another country and a transmission from yet another plant. That engine is a made up of parts from yet other factories. The parts are made from more parts from yet another factory and so on. When you change an assembly line from one model to another your down for months for that reason Ford will build all the Focus cars on one line, all the GT on another line. To make this all work there is lots of parts traveling back and forth. All these tariffs do is made "North 'American" into an noncompetitive market relative to Japan, Europe or Korea.

Economically speaking placing tariffs on Canada or Mexico is like placing tariffs on the US economy because of the tight economic integration that exists across the border. Some analyst put figures of some vehicles costing about $10,000 more if these auto tariff threats come to be. It's a self inflicted wound that will make untold damage on all sides of the border. 35 States have Canada as the number 1 trading partner, 4 States have Mexico as the number 1 trading partner including California and Texas. Plus the US is starting trade wars with the EU, China, India, and etc... US can do that but strategically it's about the worst tactic ever. Ideally you single out one bad actor, build a coalition and make a targeted focused set of tariffs to get them to the negotiating table. This trade war lacks strategy and is so diffuse that it becomes 1 nation against like 10 ... it'll only force allies like EU, Canada, and Mexico to go towards China and Russia for trade which furthermore hurts the US trade policy because you lose customers you could trade with to economic adversaries. It makes zero sense and has zero plan other than to intentionally damage the US economy.
America reign in your clown President; he is destroying the Atlantic order built out of the ashes of WW2 and has kept the peace for Western oriented nations. I'm beginning to wonder if he truly is a Siberian candidate ... Mueller the world waits with bated breath for your conclusion.

A great negotiator never shows his weakness to his enemies this is why I ordered the embassy to send the strong signal in support on human rights on prosperity to Canada on Canada day. Some people are talking Rodman...well guess what folks...fake news....I’m not saying that they should with the peace prize, but just look what I accomplished with only a few had shakes and photo ops with the little guy. He has my deepest respect....just a great leader.....loves his people. This is why I have ordered our 26,000 missiles to turn 90 degrees north....we can’t just allow the Canadians to continue to screw us up you know where ...its a sore spot.....we can’t allow the Canadians and their week and dishonest leadership to continue to shaft us with the stiff one and take advantage of us..... America is great .our people are great ..our military is great ...just look at what are accomplishing with our special operations forces in 134 countries were in today, with our great combat and special military missions, our military is great ..our military men and woman are great at getting world peace for everyone. No fake news here, believe me folks next election I’m going to make America great again and guess what folks ...we are going to build a long wall at the Canadian border and guess what folks ....the Canadians are going to pay for it..its about time we stopped them from shafting us ..America is great believe me...God bless America ...that’s all folks ... time for my afternoon twitter.

Well enjoy getting steel from all those resources the US has!!! and every other products they can make do without Canada!!! We will sit back, relax and enjoy the next year!!! or 10. Sadly Made in America used to say something, now it is all only packaged in the USA but all made in China!! Good luck with that!!! Canada should really start importing more and more EU cars, Asian cars etc they have decent cars and reasonably prices also on the low end and mid ranged. We were supposed to get a Peugeot plant in Québec, better think about this now and get rid of the US cars. Get more competition on the car market and get better prices too.

You haven't been paying attention. The U.S. has been punched for years with high tariffs... some worse than others. Level the tariffs out. How about 0% tariffs which Trump favors, but so-called allies still don't want to play on a level playing field.

You do realize.... I as a Canadian citizen... try to buy Canadian first U.S second and then maybe I go to wal-mart and buy Chinese.
So... our tariffs on dairy... is because we want our big food production companies up here to use Canadian milk.
We support Canadian farmers before your farmers... but second is better than third.
And be real..... California has more people than all of Canada’s population.
So how much can we really consume???

Americans need to get it in their thick heads that Canada is not there to just comply with their every needs and demands.
