    Whoever designed this had too much of the Belgian Delirium Tremens beer!
    Luckily we have also some good inventions of this period from Belgium, like the Belpaire firebox.

    There truly are a ton of very strange and interesting Belgian steam locomotives. In addition to the very bizarre-looking locomotive in this video, the Triple Boiler Locomotive #195, there was also the Type 3 Locomotive, which History in the Dark says "clearly throws the Whyte notation completely out the window" due to the fact that there were two unpowered wheels in between two of the driving wheels (which were coupled), and, of course, the Franco-Crosti Quadruplex Locomotive, which was THE most powerful steam locomotive ever built by any nation, EVER, and the only ever built quadruplex locomotive (with a 0-6-2+2-4-2-4-2+2-6-0 wheel arrangement)!

      It was pretty darn powerful, but maybe not the most powerful. By my calcs (they could be wrong) the quadruplex made about 97,000 lbs of tractive effort (or 432 kN). There were plenty of engines with much more power in the US, like the Norfolk and Western Y6b's making 152,000 lbs of tractive effort (677 kN).

      The Belgian railways had lighter track and roadbed, whereas American engines could get very heavy. A Y6b on Belgian rails would have crushed them. Bethlehem Steel's main line used 155lb rail!

      The gigantic quadruplex was the most powerful at its time, but many later, conventional or not, designs outperformed it, especially in the US (with the lone S1 probably being the most powerful and fast and arguably most beautiful loco ever built)

      An engine with 3 faces would be a nightmare to other engines
      Imagine someone with 3 faces, something like peter griffin but with 2 chip griffins

    The initial reasoning behind this locomotive demonstrates one of the main problems with steam locomotives in general. Steam weebs like to pretend that they're constant-force machines that develop more and more power as they go faster, but the reality is that they aren't. They are constant-power machines just like diesels, except the rated power comes from the boiler capacity rather than the limits of a diesel engine. This falls apart at low speed, where the physics of directly driving the wheels by injecting steam into the cylinders imposes a hard cap on the available tractive effort, effectively meaning that the locomotive can use less and less of its rated power output as speed decreases. This causes the illusion that it acts as a constant-force machine. Sometimes, looking at a graph from the bottom up makes us believe falsehoods that are readily apparent when you look at the graph from the top down.

    The Type 12s have appeared in my locomotive books. Both the conventional Type 12s and No. 195 are examples that Belgium had some of the most unusual looking steam engines in Europe. I suggest looking into the 4-6-2s that ran in Belgium. Both beautiful and strange-looking at the same time.

    The strange thing is that the problem of getting extra power had been solved before this engine was built. Unfortunately many locomotive designers didn't believe it. Consequently singles were still being designed for express locos long after four and six coupled machines were setting new speed records. I know the type 12s had two powered axles but the whole shape looked it was a modified single.

    Most people don't know that the region of now Belgium was the first to start the industrial revolution just after the UK.
    To avoid UK patents Britisch industrialist, entrepeneurs and engineers setup shop in now Belgium.
    f.e. John Cockerill set up shop in Verviers (Liege region) during the Napoleonic era.
    The industrial powerhouse of the south of the Netherlands was a major factor in the 1830 violent breakup with the then poor agricultural North part of the Netherlands.
    After the 1830 violent breakup the current Netherlands had to build from scratch an industrial industry.
    Lots ofafter 1830's industrial equipment was bought in the UK and Germany.
    The homegrown Industry started at the end of the 1800's eraly 1900's

    Why is the funnel blocky?

      Because of the poor quiet of Belgian coal. This coal was very dusty, almost sandlike, and would sometimes be sucked into the fire tubes and smokebox. By adding a rectangular chimney they could reduce the “pulling force”.
