    I used to think that when I retired I would buy a few properties to rent for extra income. Watching so many court shows with tenants from hell makes me know that would be a terrible idea.

    • @elizabetholiviaclark
      @elizabetholiviaclark 18 дней назад +2

      Oh, yes. My ex and I had a rental and it only took the first tenant to teach us.

      @sbalman. * During the late 70s and 80s I experienced 'good to excellent' tenants - until I didn't. One tenant told me they would pay rent until I decided to sell the property to them. No pressure. Just stating how much they enjoyed their first home. I did eventually sell it to them. But the horrible people that rented a different property were just strange. The lease stated NO PETS. I didn't own that home, I became the leasing agent when tenants moved out without informing the owner that lived in Florida. He insisted NO PETS so that was in the lease. I later discovered they had 11 formerly feral cats that lived indoors and did not understand the purpose of litter boxes. I had the interior painted white so it was clean and bright. Obvious urine stains were throughout the house - some too high on the wall to be from a cat under 6' tall. Windows were broken on the back of the house. All interior doors were either missing or destroyed. They busted the toilet bowl and left the water running in the bathtub - ?forgetting? to turn off the water. (They were still responsible for all utilities, they neglected to provide them a cut-off date.) I had graduated high school with many guys that joined the city and county Police Departments. I drove past the property en route to work. I noticed the exact same lights were on every time I drove past. When I discovered the mayhem I called the guys asking for advice. I made tons of pictures. I gathered numerous estimates. I told the guys no mail for them was delivered and how could I go about obtaining the forwarding address. Seems they moved 2 blocks away into an apartment. 5 people in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment. (They had twin boys 2 months before moving.) They were found liable for ALL damages. The husband had a tricked-out truck that was THE most important thing to him. When in court he claimed they couldn't afford to replace heart-pine hardwood flooring, redo the lower half of sheetrock throughout house, new insulation, new kitchen and bathroom flooring, replace the lower kitchen cabinets, vanity, exterior doors (warped), new subflooring throughout, water heater, furnace, new wiring, etc. I advised he had a shiny truck he bragged that was paid-off. I had pictures of the truck and shared it was in the parking lot outside. His wife jumped up and departed. She was quickly escorted inside by my friends, in uniform. It was almost comical. They had been standing beside the truck. Facing the probability of time behind bars he did sign the title over to me. I sold the truck - to one of my LEO friends. Of course I cleaned it out first. Seems the jerk was also into drugs. He wasn't happy when his wife received a copy of his 'little black book' and photos stuffed into the springs of the truck seats.

      Amateur landlords who own a property or two for "extra income" are the worst landlords. They don't understand that it's a job in a regulated industry that requires a lot of time and knowledge. I will never again rent from someone who thinks it's just set it and forget it and cash the checks.

    If he's having so many problems with the landlord - being harrassed, threatened, and constantly insulted... why is he dragging his feet to leave. Also was this recent, and said he can't do anything until the 3rd? That's almost a whole other month!

    Here in Georgia we have several companies to pick from that will provide 2 men and a truck to help you move stuff for $49/hour. “College Hunks Hauling Junk”, “All My Sons Moving”, Let’s Get Moving”, and the original “Two Men and a Truck”. All these companies are local and inexpensive. I’m pretty sure there is something along these lines in his area. But he would rather waste taxpayers money and time.
