Brian, you are the man. Your tips are always on point, and in a lot of cases, pertinent to my game. I watch a lot of pool videos, and always try to keep your lessons in mind when I'm playing. However, there's always those games where I'm the bug rather than the windshield. Is what it is, I guess, but I still need to say thanks, man. Great content. Just sayin'.
I'm on an APA league and just played 9-ball last Thursday. I'm a 6 and they threw a 3 against me. I have to go to 46 and he had to go to 25. I lost the lag, but he wasn't the best breaker and his breaks resulted in a lot of headaches with really bad clusters, and he also got all of the luck when it came to rolls. I made a couple of mistakes early on and eventually I cracked down and began thinking more critically with my plays and went hard with playing heavy safties to win the match.
I loved the apa ball count in 9 ball. But I quit back in 2012 because of sandbaggers, and or playing a 2, and they bang balls around. They either luck balls in, or when they miss, they accidentally hook you, and your kicking all the time. I went to Napa 8 ball, then you may end up in an 8-2 match. I don't know how many times you make a good shot and the cue ball deflected off a ball and knocks the 8 in. So yeah, I'd rather play a 6-6 match.
Some advice for pick-up games. For perspective, you're a 400 guy. 675 guy challenges you to a race to 10 for whatever $$ and offers you a 5 or 6 game spot. Nope. You don't want an x number of games spot. Why? Because you'll be lucky to win 2 games. The spot you want is balls, not games. In this example, where there's a big difference in skill level, you want the 6 and 7 or 7 and 8. Maybe the 6 and the break. Depends on how generous the 675 is. Just the 8? Nah. You'll have no chance. Whatever the skill level difference is, you want balls, not games.
Should add, when appropriate, change your pattern as the advanced player. A lot of times you can protect your advantage by adjusting your run out pattern.
I have this bad habit where I just don't play my best everytime even when I should. I rarely ever play my best for some reason. I never really try for some reason. I just play people I know and I like to have fun and it's not really fun for me when I try my best
Good video I agree with all you said and make some really good points but one thing. 8:49 In APA doesn’t one team put up a player first and the other team gets to decide who they’ll put up against they player? So maybe the team that lost put the 9 up thinking maybe the other team will play their higher player. I’ve seen this done on league nights so many times.
They spot me 10 to 15 points in the game to 61 (rotation) here in the Philippines. One really good player once spotted me 25 and won. All part of my learning experience here.
I’ve still never played league, but I’ve also never seen players spot other players. But there’s a lot of sandbagging going on, happens everywhere. As always, great advice, B. 🤟🍻
I'm a BCA player who has always played with BCA rules. I was recently talked into trying APA with some pool friends of mine, with what will be my first match coming up this Friday, so all this spot stuff and not having to call your pockets is very new to me. The more I hear about APA, the more I'm worried I'm not going to like it. Do you have any tips for going from BCA to APA?
I'd argue that if you're playing 9 ball and giving up a huge spot, I wouldn't take my chances on ANY ball unless it's a 2 way shot. Play safe (and like Bryan says, it doesn't need to be locked down). Higher rated players miss. Everyone misses. If you're higher rated, it only makes sense when playing rotation games to play safe until you have a clean shot and doable runout. Otherwise, ANYTHING can happen.
Brian been playing pool for over 50 years, in local leagues, regionals and nationals. I have seen so many bad things in A.P.A. a 2 or 3 does not run racks or make kick shots ... but the ones I played did.
All great pts or better yet, FACTS!!! So many things in league play doesn't seem quite "fair"... and they're not! But those are the rules ya gotta play by if playing "league" stuff. Strategy seems to be key ... I'd rather go by luck of the draw ... and maybe groupings geared to Fargo Ratings ==== Regardless, it's what one "Agrees" to. In "fair" competition -- you always want or look for things in yer favor, huh! : ) Be Smart Be Safe
Sound advice, our BCA team (8 ball) has lost matches when we have to win 18, the other team has to win 8, those are tough odds when the individual games are a race to 1. Another thing that sort of falls in that category, I see plenty of people concede the game when they're probably going to lose. I don't concede games, there are things that happen for even the best players to miss a game winning shot(s) I know I've missed those a time or two or three 😧
A sort of inverse analogy for the bad quality table hurting the high skill player more is like when gas prices go up 2 bucks/gal overnight. Working people say OMG!! Rich people say "tisk tisk".
Reply to APA comment. I played on both BCA and APA. A lot of BCA players slam APA and I got to say, at least in the BCA league I saw “Fargo Score Tweekers” . Memof my own team throwing games. So I am sure sandbagging is all over. I think APA is no worse than anyone else. If you keep score correctly in APA it nullifies the sandbagging.
Disagree with last statement. Can’t tell you how many games I lost to a 300 who ran 5 balls and out with all the balls open. Definitely still need safety play.
KIller Instinct ! A must have. Not only have, you need to season this. Play the best player that will play you.free or cheap. Don't play down a weaker players speed. Try to steamroll any opponent.. Great content ..
I watched that 2v9 match in Vegas and I remember thinking at the time that the 9 never bothered with safeties which I thought would have changed the outcome considering how much weight he had to give.

Good points
I haven't seen the video also but why on earth would the APA match a SL 2 vs SL9? Seems like a bunch of crap and there ranking system is garbage.
Thanks for watching
They do this all the time. Or put a SL2 vs a SL7 in 8 ball. It is very dumb... I gave up on APA.
As a former APA 3 in 9 ballI loved playing against 5s. I beat them often. You are on point.

You might not like the APA going from the BCA. My advice is to find a masters division and play there.
@@FXBilliards I will find out tonight how I feel about it. I'll have to look into the masters division.

That's a quote I'll use for the rest of my life.
You got it
I watched the match and the 9 choked. Big time!

APA is the worst way to learn pool. unwatchable

Thank you! I have made the same argument about the quality of the table several times.
Excellent!
One of many reasons I don’t play Apa anymore. Not a fan of the handicap system.

That's my issue. Killer instinct. Like my buddy told me: you have to be narcissistic when you play. Not my nature so it's hard.
Thank you
nice video
