- This He 219 was built by Dave Platt for display in the Designer Scale class at Toledo Expo 2006, garnering 2nd place. Not really intended to fly, Mark Taylor and Lynn Langer have spent hundreds of hours modifying, beefing up and making it flyable. Built at 44 lb, now at a flying weight of 55 lb, it is equipped with two AXi 5345-16’s and Castle Creations HVf 160's, powered by two each (12S) ThunderPower Rampage (70C) 6S 7,700 mAh per side. Two Emotec 100/200A magnetic safety switches protect things..They turn Falcon 20x13 props at about 6,900 rpm static, drawing about 85 Amps. 14 Hitec and Spektrum servos are controlled by a Spectrum PowerSafe AR12300T Rx with a dual 2500 MAh Nicad flight pack. Tx is a Spectrum 12X. Over the past 18-months Mark has put in anywhere from 500-1,000 hours doing mods. This is its maiden flight, ever!
My old maths and German master would have loved to have seen this marvellous model. He flew the real thing in the last year of the war, and was credited with eleven 'victories'. His rear-seat man also survived when they were shot down while landing near over Hanover by an RAF intruder, and both were so impressed with the post-war treatment they got from the Brits that they both came to England, where they both became teachers.

Thanks for all your constructive comments. Although I didn’t build the plane, it’s possible I spent more time on it than any plane in my lifetime in the hobby. Watching it take wing (and come down safely) was one of the greatest highs I’ve experienced in RC!
Platt is of course perhaps the greatest designer and builder ever of scale planes and one of his sacred tenets is “Build Light!” with which I fundamentally agree, but this model’s near all-balsa perfection contained some structural weaknesses (my amateur opinion based on large scale twin experience) that caused me to spend so much time in Rehab. Example: I didn’t think internal combustion engines of sufficient power to fly it could be contained in or tethered to the nacelles. So I spent a lot of time learning and installing electric power plants, first on smaller twins, then 219. I was pleased that 5 minute flight only used about 27% of battery energy
Responding to some comments: I almost never cycle gear on a big warbird maiden. These gear work: spent a lot of time replacing cylinders and springs and air systems, etc., but just adds one more thing that could go wrong on a maiden.
Likewise, the Platt-made radar array is gorgeous and ready to install, but removed for maiden.
Since this flight, a couple of momentous events: Lynn burned midnight oil to touch up the finish/cockpit, etc. so we could show off in Owatonna in August. But while carrying it gently to the flightline after assembly, THE FUSELAGE CRACKED badly at midpoint where the wing tubes cross. Evidence of a weak point all my rehab missed! So I spent a few months designing and installing a fix.
The up-trim remains a little mysterious: I have a theory, but need to read better German techno to prove. The 219 was supposed to be a “Mosquito-killer,” but never was. Despite having great performance in other measure, it’s ability to climb and chase in the “Mosquito zone” above 28,000 ft was limited. There are vague references in German engineering notes I’ve translated that “airframe adjustments were made,” and if you measure thrust line and wing root incidences on later scale plans, there seems to be an overage of “UP.”
Is it possible they tried to improve high altitude climbing rate since they could get more engine power (or fuel octane?). And does my need for DN elevator trim at 900ft ASL mean that the model is truly scale, physically and functionally??
Otherwise, it flies very gently and true.

The 219 was originally intended for JUMO 222 engines which never came. They should have had a nominal output of about 2200 hp each, about 25% more than the DB 603s it ended up with. So, this could have been the reason they had to make adjustments on the airframe.
The airplane was not particularly a “Mosquito chaser” (though in its very first operational mission flown by Major Werner Streib, of the 5 confirmed victories 2 were Mosquitoes).
It was a dedicated night fighter. The Mosquito chasing resulted in the necessity for the Luftwaffe to hunt down the pathfinder aircraft which were used for marking targets for the main bomber force. Those being mostly Mosquitoes at the end of the war.
Great job on building and flying this model! It’s basically my top favorite plane. I have a complete original main instrument panel, the gunsight and a lot of other switches and gauges from it.

Jack Steward: I spent a lot of time on CG. It ‘looked’ too far back on the 1/6 plans I have, so I did full theoretical and empiric “mean wing chord” calculations, and wound up placing it about 5/8” forward of plans. Lynn found a precise historic description of CG on the full-scale, and I felt good that the latter 2 correlated pretty well. The need for a humongous amount of down-trim on test-flight was unsettling, suggestive of tail heavy, but countering that was the undeniable fact this plane handled superbly, once we got it trimmed. Even when I briefly let it get nose-up during trimming. Truth in advertising: I haven’t flown a lot of tail heavy planes because I always pay close attention, but it’s my conviction that down trim won’t fix tail heavy! After trim, this thing was better behaved than any P-38 or P-61 I’ve ever flown!

To good, this aircraft was way ahead of its time. Pressurised cockpit, ejection seats and sitting side by side.

...designed as a night-interceptor and nicknamed 'Uhu' (Eagle-Owl) it was the first plane to get default ejection-seats for its crew...!

Yes, Johnny Kavanaugh, your technical history correlates with the research I’ve done. I have failed, largely due to language barrier, to drill a level deeper to analyze whether they made a lot of + incidence changes to compensate for power limitations and poor performance above 8,000 meters. Even more mysterious to me as a modeler is whether I can rescind some of those changes since I have plenty of power and no altitude issues. Subtle clues like test pilot comments about trim at low altitude? Can’t find them. Fact of the matter is the model handle superbly with 1/4” down elevator trim. Maybe I should just leave well enough alone?!
Always thought that the Heinkel He-219 Uhu was a fantastic-looking plane but you rarely hear anything about it, compared to the Heinkel He-111.

That jet wasn't the Alpha Jet right ? What plane was it ?
When you do a control check you include rudder and all rate switch effects and a you say the stick positions and check and say out loud the surface positions.
Jack Steward: addendum to the previous comment: after a spirited discussion, I let Lynn talk me into putting 16 ounces of lead in the nose, and that moved our CG forward another half inch for the second flight. Weather is starting to ease up, and I hope to test out my extensive fuselage reinforcements for a second flight soon. Mentally, I have decided that I will see how the first half of the flight goes before I decide whether to cycle the gear. The gear is air-driven and homemade very heavy by Dave Platt. Halfway through multiple revisions and replacements of cylinders and UP3 and lines, I did consider converting to electric but I am not very familiar with those systems and wouldn’t know the nuances or what to trust. The gear retraction mechanism and the braking mechanism are on separate air tanks. I have separate batteries for main motor power and receiver. Peak power and battery reserve are no longer heavy worries for me after the maiden flight. I have data logging ESC‘s and so the following observations are not just solely dependent on an old man’s memory: I used maximum power for only a few seconds during takeoff, and rarely used more than half wattage after that. That could change some, as the conservatism of test flights fades and I develop a natural urge to “buzz the tower” at maximum power in the future.
My batteries theoretically can drive the engines for five minutes at full power, yet my battery usage at the end of this five minute flight was only 27%.

Grass at Owatonna is very well groomed, and I find grass to be more forgiving for all the first-time unknowns

It was scratch built by Dave Platt for one of the Toledo shows and was not really intended to fly, as I understand things. It is an extremely unique model as it appears nearly nobody has modeled the design. Thank you for your comments.

Roflmao! First of all, these old guys worked all of their lives to get to fly their rc planes and get to spend their money any way they want. Second of all, flying rc beats the hell out of playing bingo in the old folks home. Thirdly, you young guys are all going to get old if you are lucky. What will you be doing when that happens ?

Not working landing gear ???
Did not want to add the worry of it coming back down for this flight . Already so many unknowns to deal with.
Why so little height? And all the time tight circuits with loads of bank? This was a test flight. Anything could have happened. The ECU fried or whatever. Single engine? And the gear down destroying any potential glide and controllability and sure to inflict greater damage with the gear being torn out and so on.
It was not really very low, besides, you need to see and hear it. The gear stayed down so that it damn well would be down when landing or in case of a quick landing. Single motor ops are always a possibility, but less so with electric. And you are correct, anything could have happened, which is why much preparation went into this flight!
@@dginia Why would you leave the gear down for a quick landing? If the power fails there wont be a landing with gear extended because you can't glide far enough to reach the runway anyway, especially from the height it was flown at. If you can't see it at a safe height then you probably shouldn't be flying it.
in real planes, you don't retract the gear on maiden either. What if you have a retract issue? Or the retract binds and kills the power or radio? I'm with the OP - leave em down on maiden
@@stewartgrant9832 you always leave the gear down on maiden on rc models. They arent exactly like full scale.

While a nice idea, it would have to be a bigger model for that to be feasible. For this one, the nacelle diameter is quite small. Also, the structure is not up to the vibration orf a recip engine as built.

a very rare and exotic Axis type that we don,t see modeled very often,even plastic static display models on the table at shows and contests ...! maybe it,s something to do with the difficult muted-blotch mottled night camo scheme that puts off many modelers...? {BTW,your paint job is Vunderbar!} does this one have retracts or is the gear fixed? or did you prefer to stay "gear down" only for the first test flights just to be on the safe side...? more details to be added later,i hope,including the Owl,s trademark Lichtenstein "toasting fork" radar antennas and an NJG1 unit crest. i think this is the first time i,ve seen a larger scale flying model of the type....? also,is it possible to later add more authentic 3-bladed propellers....?
