How long ago did you have it done? I had an L4/L5/S1 spinal fusion done 15 years ago and now have adjacent segment disease and pain in my lower back again as well as unrelated neck issues. Now I am preparing myself to have two surgeries in one day, but NO MORE fusions. They are doing a facetectomy and foraminotomy on my C5/C6 and a laminectomy on L3. I hate to say this, but I would never advise a fusion to anyone. It only weakens the discs above and below the fusion area and causes more problems down the road. There are other options. Disc replacement is one. I hope you have better luck with yours and never have issues down the road.

Proceed w/extreme caution to say "No!". My 2018 C5-6, C6-7 arthroplasties has too many bad outcomes: cervical "lordosis" (inward straight neck; limited stiff ROM); ongoing pain, and more.

Traveled to Barcelona Spine Center Dr Clavel neurosurgeon for Spinal Kinetics M6 lumbar and two low profile ESP cervical Disc implants. 80% of pain stopped immediately. Paid cash no regrets. I got my life back. Europe is ten years ahead of US. Sounds odd, but the artificial disc was invented in Germany in the mid 70’s and has been the epicenter of spinal implant excellence. FDA is slow and $14 million to get approval. So the best implants are CE medical approved in Europe first. For example the Spinal Kinetics M6 has been the go to standard in Europe for 14 years. It just received approval for one level in the neck in 2019 in US. The US has been focused on old techniques using fusion, how sad.
My surgeon had performed 7700 implants with only two early on revisions. My M6 and ESP discs have a center nucleus that acts like a shock absorber when you walk there is an impact. Most US discs are hard materials and can transfer up to 100% of the energy through the spine. The problem is ASD Adjacent Segment Degeneration happens over time and wears out the next disc level. Same with fusion. My brothers former lady friend had to go back for more surgeries every few years for the next level up and was always in pain. I regret my 16 year old fusion and applaud technology and expertise that got my life back.

Wow. I didn't realize Europe was so far ahead of the States. I live in Canada and did think it was strange that FDA approval was so slow in the States for disc replacements - they only talk about "only 2 levels have been approved by the FDA" etc. I'll look at Europe instead, if I ever need one.

So far so good, im 2 months post op, i had a bit more pain that expected but it was mostly muscle pain. After a few days i was off pain meds and by two weeks i stopped nsaids daily and took them every other day. My only advice is if you have acid reflux to have Omeprazole ready at home, the intubation and moving my esophagus aside really irritated it and the reflux made the throat soreness recovery last longer than it should have

I have had a herniated disc in my neck for 21 years, since I was 13 and now I am 34, and the circumstances do not allow for treatment (no money). I have tried a lot to straighten the neck vertebrae with exercises at home, but the neck is less long than the vertebrae. Are there exercises to lengthen the neck in the house?
