    PLEASE HELP US UPDATE THIS VIDEO: We recognise that this video is now, in 2017, outdated. Please help us to create an update by supporting us on Patreon: / therulesorg
    In the meantime, please find the updated information on our website here: blog.therules.org/update-globa.... Thank you!
    SUPPORT US TO UPDATE THIS VIDEO: Our Global Inequality video has been viewed over 1 million times since it was first uploaded to RUclips in 2013. It has been used in classrooms, lecture halls, referenced in speeches, watched at home and has informed government and NGO policy.
    It's also incredibly out of date. We would like to raise US $2,000 to cover the cost of working with an animator from Ghana to create an updated version of the video. With continued support from the community we will go onto make more and more regular video content and online and offline mainstream culture hacking interventions to support the transition to a fairer, more beautiful post-capitalism world.
    If you've watched and appreciated the animation, we'd really appreciate your help in creating one that more accurately reflects an accurate picture of rampant inequality the world today. Support us on Patreon: / therulesorg . Thank you!

Since then, as the authors of this op-ed note, the gap has grown wider with eight people holding half the world’s wealth.)

    This couldn't have hit home any closer to me. I'm from a poor country and this explains very concisely why developing countries struggle so hard to make it, when there's a defeatist system already in place that won't give us a fair chance to thrive, but all the public sees is, "look how horrible those people are they're killing one another, they deserve to live in misery." Meanwhile the general public in developed contries take their luck to be born in the righ place for granted and considered it to be an entitlement.

If it wasn't for people like them, we in the America would realize how good we had it and be much more generous with our money.

      Poverty is not an invention of capitalism. how do you describe someone that's wealthy (not only earning a lot), i'd say someone that's wealthy is some that drives an expensive car, buys the newest phone every year, goes on holiday every year and sends their kids to good schools and to university later. Now take all these factors and try to figure out how they came to be in our world. If you aren't completely biased then you see that all that is considered wealth is a product of capitalism, for example: new technology is a product of scientific advancement, scientific advancement is a product of studying, studying is a product o f motivation and where does the motivation come from? that's right - money. You won't get paid more as scientist in a communist society. Without the rich there wouldn't be what you call rich, we would all be eating dirt, face it, resources are finite and that's a fundamental factor of evolution and the concept of progress in general.

    I would query the sentence that begins,"by the end of colonialism in the 60's". The iniquitous global economic system that colonialism created remained and was kept in place by horrific acts of violence: like the slaughter of up to 1 million plus political opponents in Indonesia in the 60's under CIA tutelage, the Indochina war (more commonly known as the Vietnam war) that devastated Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (with further mass death), the civil war in Guatemala that claimed 200,000 lives (most of them poor Mayan Indians) again with Western backing, the recent fratricidal conflict in the Congo that has killed up to 6 million where Western Corporations back militias that make ISIS look tame, plus many more crimes, along with a system of patrimony maintained by intelligence services like the CIA and MI5, corporations, and most mainstream parties in the West that supports some of the worst criminals, dictators and thugs in history.
    This video does a lot to show, in stark terms, the huge disparities that exist in the world economy, alongside the concomitant favouring of rich over poor nations. However, the biggest factor,that it fails to discuss, is the violent and coercive methods that are used to maintain this disparity. Methods that owe more to Hitler or Stalin than our mainstream propaganda machine will admit too.

      +Adam Smith Well colonial capitalist relations are over in the sense that the main dominant actor of this colonial relationship is not the Nation State anymore. As you say, it used to be a dominant relationship from the metropole (the strong colonizing nation state) to the colony (brazil, india, you name it).
      Nowadays the main dominant actor is the multinational enterprise. And it does not only colonize other countries, but it also colonizes the very country where it comes from. This is what really worries our friends Le Pen and Buchanan: that they can get "colonized" by multinationals that emerge from the outside but also from the inside.
      Marxism has some room for rethinking its ideology now! (I am deeply influenced by marxism, by the way)

    • @FirasHermez
      @FirasHermez 10 лет назад +4

      Without a serious effort by the people of the world...nothing!
      Some ideas however are being tossed around to eliminate inequality and provide everyone with access to the basic necessities , I personally like the ideas of implementing Global Basic Income (GBI) or Shifting to a Resource Based Economy (RBE).
      I favour the latter but I think GBI would be easier to implement and could even work as a stepping stone which would eventually lead to implementing RBE.

      Firas Hermez Can we toss the bankers around too ? PLEASE!.
      We don't need to though, we just need to follow these 2 steps and add a 3rd idea.
      1
      From today no more debt repayments. The banks created the loan (i.e. the entire money supply) out of thin air so let's write it off.
      MASSIVE BENIFETS TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY WOULD OCcOUR
      even without and increase in the money supply ( ther's no shortage of money, right now, not even close)
      2
      Strip the billionares/trilionares of their assets, they got there not by selling Apple pcs or writing Beatles songs but by rigging the monitory falsehood paridime for their benefit.
      3
      Even though I'm not saying the world is overpopulated, imagine 2-3 less billion of us (like things fere say 40 years ago) now all of todays wealth and technoligy is used and distributed the world over.
      But this won't happen, our masters want us under their servitude and while all money remains as an interest bearing loan every single human born is proffitable.

    Why richness and wealth is only communicated in a language of money is beyond me. All this may be true, but most people I know do not care! about money such.
    They care about caring, nurturing, protecting, laughing, mingling, singing, dancing, educating, loving, growing and thinking. These riches are well distributed amongst the poorest eighty percent.
    I would love to see a chart based on this nucleus, this definition of wealth. You would be surprised what this chart would look like. Here is an educated guess. The richest one percent would not appear on this() chart.

    We have very limited choice presented to us by corporations for a lot of products. E.g. 4 companies control 90% of global grain distribution. Those same companies sell pesticide and GM seeds. They essentially have monopoly control on the market. Consumers just choose between different flavours within limits they proscribe. Most global markets are controlled in this sort of way. If it worked how you describe, it might not be too bad. But the real world doesn't, and that's what needs to change.

    Why are countries like USA so against socialism? Is this kind of distribution of wealth fair in their oppinion? What's wrong with equality and same chances? I live in a social country and we have no homeless people because the state takes care of them. Whats wrong with obligatory health care? you think you are limited in your liberty/freedom? How can you call it freedom when people don't have enough money to efford food, a shelter or education for themselves and their childten? There is alomst no possibility to get out of this prison of poverty and do any kind of social advancement. In my oppinion we should take care of each other then searching for any way to profit which would ruin the other party in an financial way. We should start thinking as a global community, not as competitors.

    this cult of Envy is fruitless - innovate, create, hustle, make it happen - there are many, many examples of people who have created personal/family wealth by being smarter, taking risks, and through pure determination and hard work
    Just like the person who made this video - which is well done, though clearly with an agenda - channel this ingenuity into a wealth creation vehicle if that's what makes you happy (because money does not always equate to happiness)

    This just pisses me off so much. It reminds me how year after year the same basketball NBA teams win the championship. It's either the Lakers, Spurs, or Heat. It's not fair!! We should do something to change the rules so that they don't get to win so much. Maybe if we can start the games so that the best teams are behind 50 points to start out with. Also Apple computer shouldn't be able to sell so many Macbooks. We should sanction Apple so other less competitive products get as many sales. That will show them. Let's change the rules!!!

Apple never asked for a rule change - they didn't whine and cry like little babies or tattle-tale to mommy or the teacher like kids saying "ITS NOT FAIR! *WAAAAH CRYCRYCRY*". Instead, they worked hard, and innovated, creating a product that people would desire over the major players (Dell, HP, IBM), and the rest is History.

      Brandon Kirk My bad, I glanced through it quickly and missed the part about starting 50 points behind. However, I'm not convinced. In fact, those rules of starting 50 points behind, are the reality of this world for billions of people - if you like the world like it is, doesn't that make you a supporter for what you were sarcastic about? I don't think it has anything to do with political ideology rather than a person's culture and maturity. There is definitely a problem here, morally, and empathetically, it shouldn't be this way, there has to be change. The solution isn't to redistribute money like Robin Hood or change the rules however. It really boils down to culture; the Germans, the Swiss, even though their country is more capitalist than anywhere else, the gap between the rich and the poor is much lower than even socialist countries. Their culture teaches self-reliance while others teach you to pray to "God" or march down the street and complain, basically relying on others.

    No... It's not shocking at all... Wealth is a stock and Income is a flow. When you are richer, you spend less than you make each year. So your stock grow. When you are poorer you spend all your income (flow) so you dont make wealth (stock).

    • @johnsergei
      @johnsergei 10 лет назад

      I'm poor, yet save most of my income, it won't get me anywhere, the bank does not even have my savings , they've invested it to make more money for them.
      You talk crap, a few years of saving will only buy me a decent used car or a cheap overseas holiday.
      I'm homeless but can afford to stay in a high end hotel tonight ( rather than my van).
      However even a dirt cheap hotel room will not be sustainable for long at all.
      And afrewards it'l take many , many months for me to have any sort of real savings again.
      You've no bloody idea, do you ? Yes my income puts me in the top 12% or income worldwide , yet is nowhere near enough to live a decent life in a developed country (don't think I could live like a king in the developing world ether)

    • @Iamaplatypus42
      @Iamaplatypus42 10 лет назад

      I talk crap? I don't know where our money comes from? What are you talking about, I stated facts (if you don't count the fact that I said it is not surprising). I explained wealth and income, how is this talking crap?
      I never told you that when you are poor you just have to save to actually become rich... I said that your flow of money prevent you from saving a lot.I'm sorry that you are poor, but all you said about your current situation doesn't disprove anything I said. You just changed the subject... I never said a poor can become rich just by saving money.
      And you confused my use of the word stock. I was talking about a stock vs a flow of something... Like A flow of water in a bathtub is the quantity per minute that goes in and the stock is the quantity present in the bathtub.
      I'll explain why the use of wealth instead of income is misleading in an other way...
      Let say every one has an income of 100 000$. Not every one will have the same wealth. Some are young so they haven't accumulated anything, some are using all money and aren't saving any, some will have saved it through the years... So no one would have the same wealth. Some would be "poor" and some would be rich even if they have the same income.
      And nthnmonkeyirishwifey... What is immoral in the way they accumulate wealth. I know stealing is bad but most rich people don't steal (except those seeking favor from government). Can you give me one exemple?

    • @Iamaplatypus42
      @Iamaplatypus42 10 лет назад +1

      Quantitative easing is a way to grow the inequality, indeed. And there is a lot of crony capitalism in most country. We would need less engagement from the government, if any, to restore the balance.
      Since the day they started the whole "war on poverty", all they created is more poor people, and increased the gap of inequality, The Gini coefficient (the most common way to measure wealth inequality) as been going up since the beginning of the government intervention.

    So... you're basically advocating that we should all change to communist societies? That didn't really work out well in China, Cuba, the USSR, North Korea, etc.

      Neither of those are/were communist or even socialist states as they had a capitalistic and state structure (i.e. not communistic) and the means of production were either driven by government or military (i.e. not socialism which means the worker ownership of the means of production).

      People who are AGAINST wealth inequality and FOR wealth redistribution are NOT AGAINST the notion that people who worked harder should also get payed more!
      They are against the fact that payment is DISPROPORTIONATE to the amount of work, which means that people who work 5x harder than others, do NOT get 5x more money (which would be fair), but instead 100x more money.
      Communism wants all people to be paid the same amount of money even though some work harder than others. That's clearly NOT what people, who argue against Wealth inequality, stand for

      Not a Communist, but in Communism you earn based on the product of your labour. Thus its ONLY hardworkingness that determines the wages.

    So many fools in these comments. I'm a top 1%er, and it's hilarious to me how so many people don't understand simple economics. There's something called "efficiency" and another thing called "equality." You can't have both in a society. Better to be closer to efficiency with high economic mobility. From the famous book The Millionaire Next Door, there is a statistic produced that states that 95% of the bottom 20% moves out of that position within 15 years. That brings up my next point, which is that income levels are constantly changing for all people. There are people who are in and out of the top 1% every year. Also, rich people don't sit on their money. That is something that poor people do. Inflation makes your money lose 2-3% of its value every year. Because of this, savers are losers, contrary to popular belief. We rich people invest our money and let it grow for us to the point where we get self-sufficient. Equality can never be achieved in our country, even if we become a communist nation, because humans are driven by selfish incentives. You can't get rid of those without turning us into something not human. In our country, we have the opportunity to rise above our situation, but that is not to say that we will not end up at the same spot. When I was young, my father told that in life, there are only winners and losers. Some people are born innately adept, while others are born with few talents. Some people are born poor, while others are born rich. Some people will have more obstacles in their path, but they too can succeed. It takes hard work and financial literacy to succeed in life. You can't succeed without either. A lot of people are hard working, but few people know how to make their money work for them. Another point I have to make against collectivism is that the government sucks at everything it does. The reason is because bureaucrats don't make profits from government run organizations, and that the money they lose is out of the public treasury. On the other hand, investors are driven by the incentive to make profits and expand their business. The money they lose is their own, and the profit they make is their own. Bureaucrats just want pay checks, while free marketers want growth. This is why the Invisible Hand will always better than the government. The government is what has created this massive debt by not being able to simply balance a budget. The military, welfare, social security, and healthcare eat up 85% of our budget. Why not cut from those and invest in education and infrastructure? Please stop hating the rich, and realize that we are people like you too. We have all come through obstacles in life. I've lived in the hood, and I even saw man shot dead when I was 6 years old. There are probably even more horrible stories amongst the rich. If capitalism is driven by greed according to "progressives," then socialism is driven by jealousy. Personal insults will not benefit anybody, but I am glad to debate people.

      Harman Khinda True. I don't know why many people keep hating the rich. You do your job well and it later on rewarded you. The poor however just keep receiving money with no proper knowledge how to spend it wisely.

"....This is why the Invisible Hand will always better than the government. ..." - not in this case (refer to video) - vimeo.com/39617101 ".....The government is what has created this massive debt by not being able to simply balance a budget...." refer to previous video link......." many more examples of R &D tech that was to expensive to be funded by businesses, took years of govt funding and research, bazillions of tax payers dollars - businesses eventually harnessed all this research investment and built businesses ! I agree with some of Fredrich Hayeks philosophies; i wouuld like to suggest your views seem a little black and white. Things are more on the grey side, a balancing act. I personally believe that this balancing act can be achieved with a little more sitting in a room alone and thinking (that goes for all of us rich, middle and poor (depending on level of poorness) some of these thoughts could be useful ruclips.net/video/H8FyaVFzMeo/видео.html .... I hate to quote a pop song at this juncture, i really do, this one is relevant - insightful lyrics - ruclips.net/video/PivWY9wn5ps/видео.html................. FINAL THOUGHT - im no expert, really, still learning's, pls take all these comments with a bag of salt. ............. oh, and the Adam Smith related comment ".......This is why the Invisible Hand will always better than the government. ..........." this quote from Adams infamous book, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, - "...People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary. Adam Smith, vol 1, bk i, ch x, pt ii - this quote tallys up with some of the interesting insights in this short article I stumbled across - www.skeptic.ca/Invisible_Hand.htm

      That is the same old bullshit talk from rich people. Blablabla I earned it, blabla bla I am smart, blablabla I am a superior being, blablabla poors are dumb and lazy. Yes it´s true, some of you might be there through hard work and persistance. But most of you got there simply by inheriting, and a lot of you throug corrupting governements, cheating or stealing. And the whole argument falls apart with the FACT that Earth resources are scarce and finite. Therefore when someone has a huge slice of them, automatically means that a lot will get deprived of them. This is straight mathematics and good luck with arguing that the Earth isn´t a 6 371 km radial sphere. If we wish to end poverty no one should hold a huge amount of wealth no matter how smart and hard working he may be.

    I dare anyone here to go find a poor person, and just give them half of whatever is in your bank account. Prove you want equality, and that you want to change the rules. There's an inequality in the world because some places have smarter, better populations. Its the same reason you, or I, might prefer to buy the expensive sandwich at Subway or Quiznos, vs buying the cheaper bread and materials at a local grocery store... and making the meal ourselves. Try to imagine a world where we land on the moon, create the internet, make so many fancy gadgets and computers, without a 1% or without a few super-rich countries.

    • @xammorf
      @xammorf 8 лет назад +9

      Ok, but where do you draw the line? The system clearly keeps increasing global inequality. Try to imagine a world where the 0.01% has 99.99% of the wealth? You can't deny there is a tipping point which would reduce or eliminate global growth and stability, if not already reached or surpassed.

    • @Baalor204
      @Baalor204 8 лет назад

      xammorf Tipping point for what? I don't think the richy-rich people would want to stifle all growth and stability. If you graduate high school, get and hold a job, and don't have kids outside of marriage... you typically enjoy a "middle class" level of life. What's the problem?

    • @xammorf
      @xammorf 8 лет назад +6

      What middle class? 56% of the world earns between 2 and 10$/day. Or do you mean the 13% that earn between 10 and 20$/day? Only 14% of the world earns more then 20$/day. In fact, if you live in the US or EU, changes are you're probably with the 7% richest who earn more then 50$/day. I know I am.
      The problem is the current system isn't sustainable. If the system keeps increasing the wealth of the richest there will be a point where the system will collapse. Wealth redistribution is essential for global growth and stability.

    • @Baalor204
      @Baalor204 8 лет назад

      xammorf Why mention world income? I thought we were talking about the US, or hell even the "western" countries.
      Please, explain without resorting to conjecture or theory, why the current system in the US is unsustainable?

    I never got a job from a poor person. This video is about CREATED WEALTH. If you create wealth you deserve one hundred person of that wealth. There is endless amount of resources and opportunity. Wealth is earned, not handed to you.

      @juicyappleish 10 лет назад +4

      This video wrongly assumes that there is a fixed amount of wealth in the world.
      This is wrong. Wealth can be created. The economy is NOT a zero-sum game.

    • @AvangionQ
      @AvangionQ 10 лет назад

      I would say you deserve two thirds of that wealth, the rest should be split equitably to the country you're in via taxes, and from there perhaps spread even further to rest of the world, as needed. Current tax rates being a bit over 30%, sounds about right. That said, for the wealthiest 1%, the people and corporations making ludicrous amounts of money, their tax rate should be 50%, as they're accumulating money they could never spend even if they tried, and even a 50% tax rate wouldn't really hamper them in the slightest. This sort of wealth distribution is a much better idea than the inevitable alternative ...

      there are NOT endless amounts of resources... And taxes used to be 90% for the wealthiest, they were still filthy rich. but that was before the great wars where businesses sold goods to both sides... for money?

      joe doe This just pisses me off so much.
