I know coaches and teammates that say, "you HAVE to go dry for the season if you really want to be great." That is a load of BS, most pro athletes I know drink year round, they simply do so in moderation.
You might be able to do it in your 20s, but for masters athletes at the elite level, especially sprinters 40+, it not only is fattening but it lowers testosterone... especially beer. The older one gets, the less T your body produces. (Masters are subject to drug testing at nat'l and internat'l meets and can not legally supplement T). Those who want to be vying for nat'l and world masters medals must do everything they legally can to support muscle strength, athletic performance, and production of testosterone and hgh. Alcohol is counterproductive. Heavy beer drinking men over 50 are often afflicted with man boobs, become effeminized, and have low T.
I decided to stop drinking alcohol at all and I haven't drunk it for almost two years and I don't miss it not even a little bit. I think I am in a good shape , to be happy one doesn't need alcohol, one can be happy in many other ways(more healthy).
Nick, you forgot to mention THE most important aspect of consuming alcohol and that is it's negative affects on our endothelial cells (the lining of our arteries) From an athletic performance perspective, alcohol is definitely something to be avoided. We need those endothelial cells in tip top shape for peak performance.
@@dogemaster4228 No one said "drink some beer and you'll run a PR". It's clear he was able to run well and still enjoy a beer or two. It's a very "results may vary" thing
Any benefit you can get from alcohol you can get from something else with the same positive effect but the thing is that it doesn't come with any of the negative effects that achohol has. Runners rationalizing drinking is a great irony. I quit drinking 6 years ago and my running and health has only benefited and improved. Alcohol is a crutch and a poison...why the hell would I want that in my body when I'm trying to perform physically or train?
I clicked because I tend to trust other guys named Nick. So far this rule has not disappointed me. Thanks for an honest review of alcohol from a real athlete!
Isn’t body fat good for the very lean 5-7 % body fat runners like myself who have to eat a lot just to get energy cause there’s barley any fat to burn.
What do you think of the complex carbohydrate in a real ale or bitter? I hear of a lot of people only drinking white spirits to minimise calorie intake, but if the beer is full of complex carbs from the hops is that better than consuming a lower amount of calories but with no nutritional value? Cheers
There is more nutritional value to beer than to spirits, but you have to ask yourself if it is really the nutrients that you body needs. I.E. is it better to get carbs through beer or to get them through a nice bowl of pasta?
I get wasted alot on and off and i exercise alot, and i noticed the alchol completely screwed with my energy systems at the same time i was getting GERD or acid reflux, I was running so slow for like a month. So i guess alchol screws with your bodies ability to convert energy.
removing alcohol was one of the most difficult parts of taking my training + diet to the next level. Sober since 2018 and in the best shape of my life!
I cut out alcohol completely about 7 years ago. Even at that time I would drink maybe once a year which might be a sip of wine or a beer once in a blue moon. I did my share of binge drinking in college and into my early 20's but I just got tired of it because of the way I felt the next day or three. But now at the age of 43 looking back it seems like as I cut out the drinking I lost friends. My question is why is it that non-drinkers are ostracized? Why is it necessary for me to drink to be accepted? It kind of pisses me off that we live in this society where someone will say "hey let's go get a beer" and as soon as you say "I don't drink" you get the odd looks and silent treatment. I mean look I feel like shit automatically waking up at 4 am everyday to go on my 10 mile run. Why the hell would I want alcohol in my system just to feel even more groggy and bogged down? What the hell is wrong with people? Why can't people just understand me dammit!!!!!!
In many ways our society has been build around the creation and consumption of alcohol. Not saying that is a good thing, it is just a reality. I think drinkers sometimes feel judged by non drinkers. That is just their insecurity though and you shouldn't have to drink to feel included.
Exact same scenario here! I've never seen any benefits with any amount. I used to enjoy brewing good stuff too. Now I think it is wasteful. I do see the social aspect though. America was built on booze.🇺🇸
My friends and I have saying on race day "Tonight we're either celebrating or drowning our misery." Its good to have fun and unwind as long as you're being responsible about it I have always felt.
Lots of different opinions about alcohol. I have never had any positives from alcohol consumption. I stopped drinking alcohol a long, long time ago and no regrets.
I'm not sure why but almost all of the great athletes I've met my entire life have some sort of "bad habit" like drinking, smoking, doing cocaine or eating a lot of junk food😂 of course it turn bad when consumed in excess

I'm 57 and recently went to a funeral where there was an open bar. Had 4-5 craft beers and a few hours later ran 8 miles. NOT recommended at all, but everything is relative. If you are mentally disciplined, this type of thing will take care of itself. Keep things in perspective and you'll be fine.
Thanks for being honest and realistic. I know so many people who don't drink anything because of their sport even not being professional. In my case I'm a "freak" who even counted calories from alkohol while going out, just cut the carbs and fats at that day and replaced it by alk. Still lost weight, because of the deficit.
This is great, thank you for sharing! I just feel like many of todays athletes (even non pro) are way too hardcore when it it comes to not drinking alcohol. With hardcore i mean that they have never even touched a beer. Now some people can be sober and still hang out, but I feel like many atheltes who chose not to drink at all are missing out on so much social stuff because of that and it hurts them in the long run.
Thanks Nick , this video is one that every college athlete needs to hear. I think the biggest takeaway is that to be an elite athlete, you need to stay away from overindulging. This season I didn’t overindulge, but I definitely drank often, even if it wasn’t much. That caloric intake , looking back, caused me to carry an extra 5-7 pounds during my competition season. I definitely plan to drink less often and less alcohol as well during the seasons. Appreciate the video man, look forward to more🤘🏻
yes! Makes me happy to hear that my message came through. Overindulging will cause setbacks. Moderation can lead to happier and healthy running and life imo.
For me, running pro and having a family were mutually exclusive. A pro runner is on the road over half the year typically, so I didn't want to start a family until after I was retired.

The challenge with drinking is the moderation thing. Abstinence is way easier. Much less to think about. Alcohol can also trigger arrhythmias. As you get older, they become more common and high level endurance training will not prevent their development.
Greetings. Here's my take on human addiction. Humans have a overall mood that lets you know if you are doing the right thing (mammal behaviors). So, that mood is the sum of exercise, eating properly, being social, etc. Most people are not doing this at all, and are getting a mood warning from their own brain biology. Their mood drops, and instead of doing the right thing they use mood-boosting drugs to artificially elevate their own mood. Then they do this as a habit and are stuck for lifetime on a whole cocktail of useless drugs and bad behaviors. If you do the right thing in the first place (exercise, proper eating, being social...), you never need to fall into the trap of badly adjusting your own mood for a lifetime. Exercise, or be miserable... When you exercise you get a mood boost (this is called "runners high"). You're supposed to exercise as a daily habit (workouts), not a yearly habit. Sports were invented to make this interesting (not just sitting around and watching sports on the TV, and eating ultra-fatty foods and drugs). You're supposed to be looking for more exercise in your life, not avoiding it. Nobody that is exercising cares about their weight (and never "diets"). Good luck, my fellow apes. :)
LoL, I still drink… in fact I started drinking more beer just to keep up with calories my burn rate was 6k a day. 😊 *I was the oldest rower in the Tokyo Games (55) - Looking at Paris and LA28!!
Is binge drinking one night every 2 weeks too much? This past weekend I did 7 shots of vodka, and plan on doing the same thing for thanksgiving. I’m not an elite runner and I’m 22.

Kipchoge doesnt drink, never has. Michael Jordan drank beers after every game. LeBron drinks redwine regurarely, some say daily. Jakob Ingebrigtsen never drinks during season, as far as I know. Different athletes. Different habits.
Question: How does the coach/athlete business relationship work from a financial side? Athlete gets contract.... Do they give the coach a cut/percentage of the contract? Groups must have a different dynamic than a one on one situation. I am really interested in getting a better understanding of how that all works.
Great question! Most of the time the coach takes a cut of the contract (five to ten percent) but in the groups the coach is often under their own contract. For example my coaches at OTC Elite and at Brooks Beasts were all had their own deals with the shoe companies.
I enjoy being honest and transparent. I'm not sure if David drinks or not, but if he does I would be surprised to learn he didn't have any leading into the 2012 Games.
yeah it can be done. Esp when you are young! I could bounce back after a heavy night of drinking no prob when I was in my 20s. Impossible today in my mid 30s.
Possibly level of American hangover is not deep as East European? Training while having last one mentioned could be harmful for health not only decreasing performance. Always should be mentioned in kind of discussion.
I run 5km everyday and do 500 push ups and 500 free squat going quet well but i dont drink since two month so my question if i drink alternative weekend can i maintain my these speed and energy?
Went over to a friends on a Friday night and his parents were unexpectedly out of town so we decided to have a ton of people show up and bring drinks😂 had one smirnoff ice which is 4.5% alc (wasn’t drunk) but jumped a PR in long jump the next day on that Saturday morning
Nick i disagree about alcohol putting on fat, it all depends on your caloric intake so if you dont eat a lot of high saturated fats that day the chances are you wont gain any bodyfat at all
it's true that if you are in caloric deficit you will not put fat on even with drinking. But if you are not in caloric deficit those calorie rich drinks are going to turn into fat.
Canadian universities do 60m and 300m sprints... My seasonal bests drinking about 10 drinks per week: 7.58 & 38.48 SBs smoking cannabis every evening: 7.50 & 37.82 SBs neither smoking nor drinking: 7.50 & 37.92 Everyone is different, that's just how my body reacts to drugs!
My physician told me that alcohol also inhibits muscle repair. So, after a long run of 30km, it feels like I really want a glass or two of wine to reward myself. But, I do wonder how much it defeats the workout that I just completed.
I have sickening migraines and I find a beer on and off helps. I couldn't get appointment with doctor putting insomnia down to anxiety the pain and nausea was indescribable the migraine kept me up all night. Some anxiety the pain was so bad bnf I vouldnt actually exercise I'm now up nine pounds couldnt even sleep hit 6 stone 10 so my body fat did not increase however, I counted it. 6 stone 10 does suck a bit I'm very short.
I set a Long Jump PR after a vodka fueled party binge. Not Ideal. I drank about 5 gallons of water in the morning..I was so damn dehydrated. The things we do when young and stupid.
Ipa has a lot of calories but less are from alcohol because of the high carb content. It's not the best nutrition or anything but it's not sugar. As for dehydration that's due to the blood alcohol content so it would be possible to drink higher than 3.2 and more slowly than average yet hydrate. Busch beer is 4.2 or so and a 40 oz takes long enough to drink and has enough total water volume plus coldness that it could be hydrating. Plus some minerals carbs Budweiser which is more expensive is 5 percent has corn syrup plus artificial ingredients I definitely notice it dehydrates me when Busch would not.
10 pints of Guinness, followed by a 10k the following morning, no problem, 40 minutes. Not bad for a 52 year old. I’ve been drinking all my life, heh if it’s good enough for the tarahumara it’s good enough for me. Life’s for living, there’s always someone faster
Serious question here: let’s say your a skinny guy with a very lean build and a high metabolism. Let’s also say your metabolism keeps you from gaining weight even with increased food consumption. would increasing proteins and carbs but also increasing alcohol intake help with putting on muscle? (My reasoning here is alcohol slows down the metabolic process and that would allow for more of the nutrients to be consumed by the muscles after Exercise)
uff... i rarely drink, just when socialising. But a few times i ran drunk on plum brandy. Law calories, but it burns. High dehidration. And i felt it like some kind of doping. I couldn't get tired. Maybe it was an illusion, as hypothermia on alchochol. But the run was awsome. I realy enjoyed it. The only bad thing was a slight loosing of balance when turning my head left and right. But straight-line movement was so easy, so smooth, so fast, and so long... And i'd like to know something more... i am 42 years old coffee and tobaco addict. But also, i felt in love with running long time ago, and that love still lasts. i ran half-marathon at the age of 16, for 1 hour and 26 minuits. I rarely run now. A few times a year. But yesterday, i ran becouse i was forced to. Had to go to town to buy some medicines for my mother. It was weekend, and the bus didn't come. I ran 12 kilometres to nearest town, with a bag on my back, and in shoes that were killing my toes. After one kilometer i thought i will never menage. But i did. I ran 12 kilometres without stoping. For 1 hour and 5 minuites. It's a pretty bad time, but i was extremly satisfied becouse i didn't stop all the way... Do you know something about running with nicotine? Some famous soccer players were passionate smokers. Some boxers, basketball players, mma fighters... Cyclists from old Toure de France were photographed standing by bycicle with a cigarete in their teeth... The most of over 100 years old people are smokers... Is there maybe any elite runner who smokes cigaretes?... It's a silly question. I know. But... : )
U can drink but only beers because if you drink liquor it sweat out easy and it take out all the water out from your system but if you drink beers then it stay in your system. That's a fact☺️
I'm one of the few people that's able to just go dry. Any amount of alcohol throws off my sleep schedule and although I'm not really training for anything right now, I'm just better off without it.

Nick Symmonds that makes sense. Is the percentage the same for appearance fees or monies earned as bonuses, records, wins for example?
Hey Nick I heard other youtubers mention you have a Chanel and I instantly subbed ur a hero for us American runners
I appreciate you saying that and I appreciate the sub!!
I am certainly happy I don't drink!!
Thanks a lot I really used that info
Thanks for the honesty
I will be subbing to you
Do you think David Rudisha drank any alcohol leading upto the 2012 Olympic Games ? 😉
On a serious note, I truly like your honesty on all subjects. 👍👍👍
I enjoy being honest and transparent. I'm not sure if David drinks or not, but if he does I would be surprised to learn he didn't have any leading into the 2012 Games.
Nick Symmonds You’re a good sport and don’t take life too seriously. I do like your outlook on life. 👍👍👍
He does there's a picture of him and kiprop and some other Kenyans with some wine
Gotta pop a cold one with the boys before my race though.
I want to keep being an alcoholic and master calisthenics.
Sponsor Zach Levet please
I don't sponsor athletes! Run Gum occasionally does, but is not at this time.
I've seen some ridiculous athletic performances from people after a heavy nights drinking..
yeah it can be done. Esp when you are young! I could bounce back after a heavy night of drinking no prob when I was in my 20s. Impossible today in my mid 30s.
@@nicksymmonds Thanks for the reply Nick, I am a massive fan of yours from Melbourne, Aus. Keep up the great work mate!
I played golf like really well one day after a night of smoking out. Was really relaxed. Sunk a 20ft birdie put at one point.
Great conversation around boose
Possibly level of American hangover is not deep as East European? Training while having last one mentioned could be harmful for health not only decreasing performance. Always should be mentioned in kind of discussion.
Nick you always tell the truth
I run 5km everyday and do 500 push ups and 500 free squat going quet well but i dont drink since two month so my question if i drink alternative weekend can i maintain my these speed and energy?
Yes
wheres the truth about rungum and running?
Have you ever smoked weed and do you use CBD?
I have smoked weed, didn't enjoy it. Occasionally chew CBD gum :D
@@nicksymmonds is marijuana on the list of banned substances for track?
@@brownmamba6538 not nick, but i do believe so
he won gold medal while drinking?!
I love booze and can't wait for the whiskey mile vid!
Canadian universities do 60m and 300m sprints...
My seasonal bests drinking about 10 drinks per week: 7.58 & 38.48
SBs smoking cannabis every evening: 7.50 & 37.82
SBs neither smoking nor drinking: 7.50 & 37.92
Everyone is different, that's just how my body reacts to drugs!
Henry Rono 5 pints night before winning Olympic gold so moderation works.
incredible if that is true!!!
The things we do when young and stupid.
ha! I have a couple stories like that. I also have a couple where I really hurt myself trying to run hungover!!
I know. But... : )
I don't know any elite runners that smoke cigarettes but I know some world class high jumpers and pole vaulters that do!
@@nicksymmonds i guessed so. Running demands much mor oxygen then other sports. And track demand much mor oxygn then field
Why would you want something to push you to smoke XD
Is it even possible to wait till 21? In EU its legal when uoure 18 but anyways most kids start when theyre 13/14.
i run fast as shit while drunk
Love the honesty Nick. Takes a lot of sack as a pro to admit your faults.
total transparency. I didn't always make the best decisions, learn from my mistakes!!
U can drink but only beers because if you drink liquor it sweat out easy and it take out all the water out from your system but if you drink beers then it stay in your system. That's a fact☺️
don't know why every time I hear run-gum I think about rum-ham
That's because Dr.Mantis Toboggan said that Rum-ham is good for you. He's not wrong and he has a Magnom Dong
Alcohol just makes no sense in terms of athletic performance. It's all negatives when it comes to alcohol.
I'm one of the few people that's able to just go dry. Any amount of alcohol throws off my sleep schedule and although I'm not really training for anything right now, I'm just better off without it.
