We love our fruit trees. It stated out as a hobby but we now have around 450 trees.
lol. You would sizzle away here. No judgment though. I can’t handle a slight chill!
Please remove the leaf with curl and discard as it is loaded with spores. Don't touch any other leaf after picking because you will spread the spores so just wash your hands. The garden looks fantastic!!!!!!

Red raspberry make great homemade wine.. You’re very chatty and pleasant to relax and just listen to..its refreshing to know there are still women that are happy with being a home body as opposed to the empowered corporate feminist type that our pop culture tries to socially engineer through all media sources.
I've grown popcorn the past three years. This year only one plant has popped up. 😕 I stuck some more seed in the ground but our growing season is so short that even if it does grow, I'm not likely to get mature corn in time. Oh, and it was seed from last year.

You should try cream of Saskatchewan watermelon. I grew them in Oregon and now in a greenhouse in Sweden. They are soo good :)

Asparagus question: how far apart do the crowns need to be planted? And if I build a raised bed (with an open bottom) how wide does it need to be? I was hoping that a 2x12 space would be sufficient.
Grape Question: what varieties are you growing? Are they for fresh eating or wine making? Do they have seeds?
I planted our asparagus a about 18 inches apart. The grapes our a table grape (fresh eating) seedless green grape called Interlaken and then a white wine grape Niagara

I live in SPARTANBURG SC and Monday it was 87 * and 90%humidity . Stifling . It’s the humidity that gets you even more than the temps . When dog days hit it will be mid 90’s and 90% humidity. Now that’s summer in the south , just awful and I was born here . 🥵
Do you have a timeline for planting in the PNW?
You have to go off your first and last frost dates for each plant.
Are pickling cucumbers different than eating/slicing cucumbers? I thought you just had to pick them when they were small.

What are you talking about, 85 degrees high humidity is bad, thats great weather in the South, not sure where you are at in the South but that would be nice if it was like that around where I'm at.
You are so not the only one who likes meandering around looking at all the baby produce. It's my stress reliever! I love just walking around my property looking at all the plants. ☺️

Your garden is beautiful! Be mindful that planting popcorn with your sweet corn will change the flavor of your sweet corn and most likely be far inferior. That could ruin an heirloom seed if you don’t have some reserved for the next season. I would recommend pulling up all the popcorn and planting it far far away from any sweet corn varieties. Those hot days are rough on me too, but they’re totally expected here in the hot humid south.

I love seeing my fruit and veggies make. Also, touching the plants and feeling all the different textures. Then the scents when you brush the leaves. The garden is so relaxing.

I used to plant a lot of garlic under my trees when I had leaf curl. As long as I had garlic under them, I did not seem to get the curl. Don't have the trees any longer (I moved), so don't know if that would still work or not
I like to go through the garden and tell my plants how beautiful they are, so no you're not the only one that talks to your plants. How beautiful!

Thank you for explaining how you use the Egyptian walking onion in cooking. I saw those recently on Canadian permaculture legacy, with the tiny bulbs I wasn't sure it was worth it, but after you explained how you use the stalk as a green onion it makes perfect sense! Bit by bit I'm aiming for more fruit and perennials myself. 😄 ❤️ Keep on growing!

I started my melons early and transplanted. Not recommended as they don’t like their roots disturbed but 7 out of 8 are growing wonderfully and strong and weeks ahead of what they would be.
Things are looking good!! Best of luck this year ..here in Central Indiana just had temperature change where I could get my Peppers& Tomatoes out finally. Xoxoxo

I love your garden. I don’t have one currently but I am interested in homesteading. For now I am learning as much as I can while waiting for my greenhouse to be built. We do have some fruit trees. Hey where can i buy your book on preserving food fruit n veggies? If you keep the crabs on ice do make them docile u can clean them once ur back home just before cooking them i like to wash the mustard out plus i feel im not wasting any seasoning. Im in florida we dont have a sex or size limit on blue crabs sucks yall gotta throw all those crabs back but sure it dont suck worse than the fines they carry. Our goat charlotte ate so many of our fruit trees we finally sent her off to a family members ranch, a couple of those were already producing fruit but she killed them.

our Bibles tell us it will be a day of mildew...like powdery mildew...we must prepare for the times when food can not grow due to moister in the air...this has been a terrible year to grow in Portland...non consistant weather killed many seedlings
Wonderful video with a plethora of info! Thank you so much! I am proud and excited to say that I have broke ground for my first time ever and planted 5 tomato plants. I also have 6 tomato plants in pots, a broccoli, several starts of snow peas, a few okra plants, red peppers (not bell), and a plastic (ug) bin where I'm trying to grow organic (as can be) yams! I have also started seeds for arugula, Black Velvet nasturtium, hummingbird vine, moon flower vine, malabar spinach, snow-in-summer, and some moringa, due to it's multi-nutritive value. I had really lofty aspirations and made myself plant ONLY SO MUCH so I can get a feel for this gardening thing. I look forward to having a continuing food source for years to come and realize: the garden education never ends, so the time to start is NOW! :D Thanks, again, for sharing the ways you and your family maintain an amazing level of self-sufficiency! Watching your videos has been lifesaving for me.

Lol in February here in Oklahoma we had -10 snowstorm and then 80 degrees the following week! We've had a cool spring this year of 70s! Today starts our 90s and here in july and Aug will be 100-115.

Fantastic orchard and vegetable garden. I like growing fruit trees also, but where I live near Manchester in NW England probably gets higher rainfall even than where you are, so to prevent peach leaf curl and give an extra boost of heat to ripen the fruit, it is standard practice to grow peaches inside a greenhouse or polytunnel in most of England. I have an 'allotment' garden not far from my home which gives me more space to grow fruit and vegetables, I do grow a few apple trees at home in my back garden, but it is too shady for veg. I have 3 greenhouses and a polytunnel (hoop house) at my allotment - like you we get shorter cooler summers in England, so you need to start tomatoes, peppers, etc off in the house under growlamps or on a windowsill early to get a crop in August/September - melons are very marginal here outdoors as well - generally considered a greenhouse crop in England. I started my celery winter sowing style. I never grew celery or winter sowing before.
I almost threw them away because nothing sprouted .... then one day I saw green. I’m a second year gardener , literally a novice and I had success with winter sowing 🌸

What is the name of the shell beans (october) you plant? Do you know of you can cook the white seed of a blue lake green bean if they are too big to eat as a green bean
Is that bird netting around the trees? that works for deer? i'm getting a lot of trees from arbor day in the fall ... we're clueless how to protect them. last time we planted about 20 trees the deer got all of them in 1 night leaving only 1 to survive!

You can try peeing in a can and leaving by the tree for deer keeps them away from

I put a copper stake in the ground and that kept the fruit from spoting.

I pulled my overwintered broccoli but left two orange cauliflower plants and they are heading up now. I will try them again next fall. My climate near Shelton is similar to yours. Crazy fluctuations in temperatures. Windy today on our lake and cool. Still have a lot remaining to plant.
Just found your channel, where is your homestead located, sometimes methods discussed in videos on you tube never work for us because we live in Southwest Washington, with a lot rain! We use raise beds at this time because of the clay soil.

Would fruit trees in a pasture be smart utilizing space or a really bad idea? Haha
Depends on what livestock you're running through. You need to be able to rotate the livestock off during harvest (or they'll eat most of it in our experience). And cattle will nibble on young fruit trees (so will goats) and sometimes just completely destroy them. It works great with poultry and can with other livestock if you rotate them through strategically. Established orchards are easier to run cows through with mature trees.
Deer are assholes, they ate the tops off a lot of my green beans last night.
A number of years ago, we had a really hot year and I grew melons. The honeydew were fantastic, cantalopes so-so and the baby watermelons were cute, beatiful red and tasted like....nothing! Oh well, at least the honeydew were really great. That was in Concrete.
K- found you recently and LOVE much of your content. I have to tell you though, both my husband and I are giggling. We are Siskiyou County residents (and yes, I love Siskiyou Seeds) but its pronounced Sis Q (two syllables). I have debated saying something (especially publicly) but I would want to know - believe me Ive been corrected on a lot of the names here n our county. 🤪
I believe we are roughly in the same climate zone but I am high desert so I am loving taking your methods and modifying my gardens. Oh- and 80*? Haha... I feel your pain. It is pouring here and we are supposed to be mid 30's tonight and 100* by next Friday.

Do asparagus grow above or below ground?

It's like a fern - dies back in the winter then comes back in spring. The young stalks are the asparagus we eat, then they open up to light frilly ferny stuff.
How do you keep the deer out of your veg garden?
I'm growing my celery among my roses. Not on purpose, because I'm working with a 10X10 square foot area. We don't have a lot of room for a garden... anyway my celery are thriving with the roses. And the roses are thriving as well. It's a happy accident. Also layered wood mulch on top of my soil.

Oooh, I'm in Portland. Excited to hear more about your melon seeds - which variety did you chose? Looking forward to updates. (And I wonder if the deer would eat the green apples - toss them outside your garden and maybe they'd go THERE instead! I'm with you on the quick weather changes - and supposed to be 100+ here this weekend. UGH!!! My celery and my cilantro are bolting and starting to flower - swallowtail butterflies love all those types of flowers (carrots, dill, celery, cilantro), so hate to terminate them even though I have small/limited garden space.

30 degree swings was never normal in 48 hours. Most of the continent is experiencing extreme weather. Otherwise more plants bolt unintentionally. Climate crisis is giving a lot of growers difficulties with late snaps, no rain. Humans destroy more than they create

Yup, freeze to death and you couldn't dare question science. Plus, hair spray was eating the ozone layer and laser beams from the sun were going to get through and cook us. Haven't heard about the ozone for a while
New to your channel here. So much info I love it! We are looking to buy property in the next couple years and I want to grow food and raise small livestock 😁 I can't wait but I'm all for getting as much info as I can beforehand.

I have a question about your tomatoes. I watched your tomato growing video where you talked about growing them in the high tunnel. Do you move the high tunnel or do you plant your tomatoes in the same soil every year? I'm a bit confused by that.

I did the same thing with broccoli and got a medium head early this spring. Also took two peppers in last fall. one was a Jalapeño that still had peppers on it the we picked tlll February then cut back. Also brought in a bell pepper that hadn't produced and cut it back to grow roots for this spring. I put both in pots a month or so ago and have ton's of blossoms on the jalapeño and some peppers that will be ready soon (have had the Jalapeño outside n it's 12" pot a couple weeks and just put the bell out that has a small bell on it about 3"). I plan to take these two back in this fall.

We have a lot of deer on our property in southeast WI and have experienced similar issues with them eating our fruit trees. We've put the barriers around the individual trees just as you have but the deer are very persistent and rear up on their hind legs and still reach over the netting to eat the new growth. We'll be installing an electric fence next and hopefully that will keep them out.
We have the same issue with deer in Maine. What works well for us is putting a little tin foil on the top of the hot fence in a couple of locations with peanut butter on it. The deer lick it and only do it once.
Lead poisoning is our favorite method of protecting our fruit trees. Venison… ummm

Beautiful garden! You have a lot of variety there. It's neat that you have never grown celery before. I have been growing enough to blanch & freeze for a year. This year I have even more so may be able to share with others
