.8mm flux core and the steel snipped off the back of a dishwasher. We're still picking shit up that we find dumped next to tracks, right? May as well use what you can and tip run the rest. Cheapest way to do it not necessarily best, prettiest or easiest as you can only run a 'long tack' not a decent bead as it'll burn the panel. Smooth it down a bit with grinder to check for holes and whack it with bituminous seam sealer. Sometimes before you send you gotta mend.

My first 4 wheel drive, a jeep wrangler, I was able to run 33s with no lift, so I ran 33s until I got a lift. When choosing a lift I kept in mind that my end goal was to run 37s, so I ran a lift that could support 37s. This gave me some very good suspension travel with 33s. I then saved up the money I would need to purchase 37s, gears, and lockers over time so when the 33s met the end of their life, I already had the money set aside to make the big jump to 37s. I'm now doing some high clearance aluminum fenders to squeak out that much more room for articulation, as well as some minor suspension work to give my axles some better geometry and a smoother ride. Overall I've been very pleased with my "build up game plan".

When I was 16 I had been working and saving for my money for a couple of years knowing I wanted a 4wd, in particular a coil cab td42 patrol ute or wagon. I wanted a fairly stock vehicle so I could pick and choose what mods I wanted to do the vehicle. I was starting to lose hope thinking I wouldn’t be able to afford one with the money I had been working hard to save, until a market place listing popped up on Facebook about a ute not far out of my budget. The listing didn’t have much information about the vehicle however I rang the number provided asked some questions about the vehicle and arranged to look at the ute as soon as possible. Went and had a look and it was everything I was looking for. Stock coil cab factory 4.2 gq ute was in very good order owned by an old fella who had done mainly highway kilometres and was a country vehicle which had done no beach work. Made an offer and got the vehicle a bit cheaper and brought it home. Now a few years later I have been modifying the vehicle to my liking and loving every bit of it. Thanks for the video. Really enjoy seeing builds similar to mine. 👍🏾

Hey guys, I've had a rough patch in getting into 4wd my first ute was an mn triton to which was a lemon and had to sell, then I traded it in for a n70 hilux which was one of the best vehicles I've ever own to it got written off 5 month owning it. (Wasn't my fault) then I came across a ex telstra gu series 4 patrol. 140000 no service history but was for only $19000. From then after having another car accident with my patrol I got if fixed and for the first time I've actually slowly started adding mods to it.
But in saying that you guys inspire me to keep pushing and fixing my vehicle and slowly build it right. 😃😃

We've since spent a fair bit to get her mechanically A1, and added a RTT, water, bbq, shower and a few power and traction goodies too. We hit the Cape this year in around 8 weeks time after 3 years in planning and I'm genuinely fizzing about it.

Another tip is to drive it on a dirt road or wet parking lot to see if all four wheels track straight and true... if not, it may have been in a wreck and have a bent frame, or some other problem making it crab down the road. I bought a 1992 V6 Hilux and did a budget build on it over a period of 4 years. It has 425,000kms, and is a weapon out in the bush because it’s a single cab short bed version. The biggest thing I had to deal with was rust. Found a perfect frame for 600$, and had the cab fixed for about 2500$. Well worth the price.
My tip for buying a used 4x4, if you don’t know very much about mechanical, it’s always worth paying a mechanic to go over it for an hour. Also, a trick that I do, is I get the owner to move the steering wheel back and forth while I check the front steering components. It’s amazing what has shown up when I’ve looked at vehicles

Tip: Look for badging that is in the right area but not exactly the right spot. Also, take a look at the panel mounting bolts and look for signs they have been removed or if things have shifted. These can be signs that the vehicle has been in an accident. This isn't necessarily a reason to walk away, but it might provide some negotiating room with the price.

Spot on Jocko. I managed to pick my MY97 80 series for $7500 CAD a couple of years ago using the techniques you talk about. Be willing to drive for the right car. Do a mechanical inspection. Research the specific things to look for with the model you're interested in. Also know where you should be willing to compromise. Yes lockers are nice to have straight away, but with the 80 series in particular, non locked vehicles are often in dramatically better condition making aftermarket lockers a better choice than holding out for factory lockers. In my case knowing about badge engineering played a big role. Often times Land Cruisers sold under the Lexus brand ring in quite a bit cheaper in North America for the equivalent model. An LX450 is still very much a Land Cruiser 80 series.

By far the best thing i have ever bought and it is also my dream rig as well as my first car. I could never sell my ute. Its been through alot with me and has never let me down

I tend to unplug a couple of plugs in the engine bay and check the condition of the contacts to have an idea of the state of the wiring harness. If there's a lot of green in walking away. Issues in the wiring harness are a headache to solve without running a huge bill.

Just picked up my second 4wd project. 1997 Toyota 4runner limited 128k miles, with a factory rear locker for $1500. Had a 05 4runner with all kinds of goodies (bumper, snorkel, long travel, ext) but made the stupid mistake of selling it last year. Can't wait to start on this one and start wheeling again.

i scored my uncle and aunties 95 suzuki vitara a couple of years ago for free. was in terrible condition. leaked oil and coolant (still does but not as much anymore), side mirror smashed, rust, tires pretty much balled but hey, i wanted to learn manual and i also wanted a project to learn on. 2 years later, Penny's still mostly stock other then some A/Ts, a bullbar, a snorkel and some other mods. Hasn't been lifted yet but Penny still goes places the bigger rigs go, scrapes alot lol but she's a hell a lot of fun.

bought a GXL 80 series cruiser with lift, 33's, awning, bulbar, snorkel and emu wings on it already for 15k. Has 390xxxkm on it but the 1hz is healthy as and runs like new with not one bent panel. Super happy with it considering most 80's in the same condition are up around 20-25k due to covid tax !!

Check engine blow by, by undoing the oil cap and let the engine idle. Watch to see how much the cap dances.

I recently just picked up a 3L diesel 2001 Prado for $4000 (off a family member), it had a few minor issues with it that needed putting right but it had just been serviced and new tyres all round and 2 new batteries and 2inch suspension and 2 inch body lift . only issues is that is had a cold starting problem that I have fixed and 430k on the clock and a cracked down pipe which I'm getting a friend to weld next weekend, I'd say it was a pretty good buy myself, already taken her for a weekend away and she managed almost everything I threw at her. only mod I can see myself doing is 33inch muddies

A few years ago I bought a 1990 Toyota 4Runner off a good friend of mine, the only mods it had done to it was a 2" lift and 33's on it. The places I took that 4Runner would amaze even the most hardcore wheeler. Regretfully I sold it a few years ago. Anyway last year I decided that I wanted to get back into 4WDing again and found a one owner LandCruiser FZJ80R 93 model from out west, I don't think it had ever been near sand or off road in it's life except for on the farm.
Anyway I decided to build it up into a very capable 4WD for my wife and I to do some adventuring in, starting with local trips like Stradie and up into some state forests to do a shake down as such in the view of going up to the Cape.
So you'd think buying a really good condition one owner LandCruiser 80 series wouldn't need too much done to it to get it up to scratch to be a capable tourer, well this is what I've done so far and I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I've fitted a auto Lokka in the rear and elocker in the front, both diffs lapped in, Terrain Tammer part-time 4x4 kit, free wheel hubs, full front knuckle rebuild with the heavy duty Terrain Tammer bearings front and rear. New NPC clutch and fully reconditioned tail shafts, two inch body lift, 2 inch raised King springs with heavy duty Terrain Tammer shocks all round, new heavy duty Panhard rods and rear heavy duty upper and lower control arms, radius arms have had the caster correction bushes fitted for the 2" lift, rear Airbags, new RDA discs all round, longer dog bone for better handbrake adjustment, twin thermo fans with a Aeroflow fan controller, aftermarket oil cooler, rear draws roof rack with tent, UHF radio, 200ah Lithium ion battery, DC/DC charger, 300 watt solar panel and a 50 amp solar regulator. Plus recovery gear and all the camping gear needed.
What I'm getting at is the one owner $2200 LandCruiser 80 series now owes me well over $10k but I now have faith that I can take this vehicle around Australia and some with the piece of mind that everything is going to be reliable.
Sorry for the long drawn out post but I just wanted to get across that to get a 4WD tourer to the point that you can jump in and go just about anywhere takes a great deal of time and money.

I just got my 2nd 4wd got a 2008 ZD30CRD wagon in my favourite colour with 150,000kms for just 21k off a diesel mechanic who used it as a family car. It’s no TD42 but it’s low kms and well looked after and stock as a rock so it’s a blank canvas for me to work on. Sold a single cab cruiser for it, realised I didn’t need the Ute anymore and a wagon is more for me, love having coils all around and a comfy ride. I also learned the first time around suspension isn’t everything I spent too much time and money trying to set my old Ute up and never got it how I wanted it anyway, I’m going to keep it simple with a 2-3inch lift and focus more on camping and practical mods. 👍🏻

Utility companies can be a good place to look, or ex-military stock. Nearly always come with a full service history and maintained well, although they can be used hard by people who don't give a toss about them. I got a lovely Landrover 130 double cab pick-up from an electricity company, complete with PTO winch and secure box on the back which I modded into my vehicle for expeditions into North Africa.

Yeah I brought a 2002 Mitsubishi challenger ls the one with the cushy leather interior. It needed some work the brakes didn't work the engine had a bit of lifter noise. But when I checked the oil level it was seriously low and very very black. He was asking $4800 for it. I got it for $2000.
Me and a mate got it home replaced the brake discs and pads and bled the system, changed all oils and fluids and added a trans cooler to it.
I spent a further 5k on mods including, 2inch lift, 33s, rear draws, 12v system, fridge, awning, roof rack , rtt and spotties and turned it into a little auto V6 petrol beast. That was my first 4x4

At the beginning of this year I picked a Jeep TJ Rubicon for $7K USD, she needed some TLC but overall in good shape. After about 3 months of work and $2K worth of parts, she is running like a top.
