LOL i noticed we had the same color of gameboy.. same model no. etc and when you turned around your gameboy i noticed were also using the same batteries. This comment is off topic but it made me smile :P
The Nintendo security screws (Tri-wing 3.0) shouldn't really be a problem, since there's loads of screwdrivers on the market for them now - usually from £2.00 ($3.00) and upwards. As a computer engineer, I'd recommend getting your hands on the Jackly 32-in-1 since for around £7.00 ($12.00) you'll get a lot of use out of this set. It's also magnetic, which is always a bonus.
Hey Sid, let me know if you need help with the sound problem. I did some looking around on the web, and apparently the problem is usually the speaker itself. The DS Lite speakers seem to be the best for replacements, and you can get them on ebay for a dollar or two shipped.
I think it's really important to emphasize the DUST FREE environment when doing this. I did something similar with my GBA and got one or two pieces of dust in there, and they really show when you're playing afterwards and it's so annoying lol. What I did though was add a backlight to my GBA so it made the dust show even worse.
Cool, I did not know it was so easy to replace the cover screen in the Gameboy colour. I have the exact same model, will have to check out the condition of my screen and if it is scratched source a replacement. Thanks for the tutorial.
Is the new screen you got the exact same as the original Gameboy screen? Is it made out of the same material? I need to get a new screen for mine but I'm having trouble finding a screen.
On my gameboy color you have to turn the sound wheel down for some reason. Try that, I noticed you had it all the way up not down. Im not really sure why nintendo did that.
Yes you can, I just did my GBA the same way, I just used a small flathead screwdriver from a eye glass repair kit instead of a boxcutter. I got my replacement screen from Amazon. :)
Did you know you can use a DS Lite speaker to work with a GameBoy Color, although you do have to cut some plastic for the speaker to fit into the hole.
I've used a precision flathead to open those before and it works fine. Then again, I've snapped off a precision flathead on those too. :( Also, are you sure its the capacitor and not the speaker? You can buy replacement speakers on eBay for cheap.
You might need to solder a new speaker on to the board. A friend helped me do it on a gb with a busted speaker. You might also want to look into purchasing replacement housings, the guy I get them from on ebay includes a screw driver and new speaker to each housing.
Hey man quick question, i had my Game Boy Color since 1999 and unfortunately it has a huge black pressure mark from when i was moving. Kinda got crushed lolz. Does this video help with that?
Just to inform you on the sound, it's not the capacitors it's the speaker that's dying on you, it needs to be replaced with a new speaker then you'll get sound again.
The speaker is most likely fine, the problem is with the audio jack not normalizing. Dip a headphone connector in alcohol and plug it in repeatedly many times, that should fix it.
thanks i've found and watched this video, i always wanted to know the difference between replacement battery cover and original case/shell, NOW i know the are way different!! WHAT A SHAME
2 weeks later sceatchs every where :P and when u turned the vol up you where really turning it down lol thaat was funny try turning it the outher way next time u might of just all ways had the vol on low :D
It's easier and safer to take a small pair of metal scissors, lift the corner and slide a small screwdriver under and slide across breaking the adhesive loose. Using a blade like this is just asking to cut yourself.
LOL i noticed we had the same color of gameboy.. same model no. etc and when you turned around your gameboy i noticed were also using the same batteries. This comment is off topic but it made me smile :P
Same not common lol
I know this video is old, but you lowered the volume 😂. Still a helpfull video, thanks!
You are turning the volume down by the way great vid
I'm actually thinking about getting a replacement screen lens that says "Game boy horror" mainly because I love Luigi's Mansion
Thank you for this I'm gonna attempt this. One of my neighbors got jealous and scratched my screen when I was a kid.
No problem Tony, I hope this video helped in some way. = )
Thanks for the tutorial! I thought I had to open the console to change that piece. My two GBC are looking great now!
Thank you! That was much easier then I would have thought

It happened to me too, the volume raises when you scroll down the volume tab!
Yea, like NergamesTV96 below me said, I saw you were turning the wheel upwards. You need to turn it down in order to raise the volume.
Thanks for the info! I kinda figured it would be that easy, but I didn't want to risk irreparably damaging my childhood GBC.
It does make it look better Brian, trust me!
Idk if same for you... But my gameboy volume turns up by rolling the thing down not sure if you did that or not... Good video tho:)

I will keep a note of this of course sir, work has been killing me slowly! XD
Great video man! Nice and easy fix gona do this to my gameboy colour from when i was a kid so it gives it a brand new feel! Great tutorial 10/10!

You have to turn the dial down for sound
Did you know you can use a DS Lite speaker to work with a GameBoy Color, although you do have to cut some plastic for the speaker to fit into the hole.
Thanks OldSchoolNYCGamer, I used your video to help me replace my GBA screen :)
yes that is true but he probably had one of the first models of the original gameboy which did have the normal screws
I've used a precision flathead to open those before and it works fine. Then again, I've snapped off a precision flathead on those too. :(

Plz Reply i too live in ny but where do i find the flea markets always wanted to go one but i have no idea where they are plz help

It's also most likley needs a full capacitor kit for it to work fully with no other issues..
That is something I am not too sure about so I would research that more via google to troubleshoot that.

Can this also be done with the GBA SP model ???
If there is dirt actually on the LCD screen itself, is it okay to wipe it off with a damp cloth of Windex etc.. ?
+oldschoolnycgamer for the tri wing screws you can just use smallest minus type screwdriver (which usually comes with glasses) and it works just fine!
Where u shop that replacement screen?
great tutorial this will come in handy for a lot of people. looks great!
Well demonstrated, very slick thanks man
from what i know and seen, in australia the earlier models dot have tri wings
what is that game community that you mentioned? I need help fixing my gameboys.
hmm, im really not sure how it would be for the SP, since i dont own one, sorry.
Do you know any dust free areas that are in any household (Dumb Question XD)
When you said this 1:18 I was like: "ahw come on :/ guess I have to wait haha >o
You just have to solder a new speaker in.. it’s really easy.. and you need a tri wing screw Driver to get those back 6 screws off
I would do it with a soft dry cloth but please read up more online before attempting that.
thanks i may do this, i bought a used game boy color, and the screen is a bit scratched.
You can get the replacement screens for cheap on ebay or amazon if you look hard enough.
The speaker is most likely fine, the problem is with the audio jack not normalizing. Dip a headphone connector in alcohol and plug it in repeatedly many times, that should fix it.
Great video I had no clue this was possible!
Can you use something besides a Exacto knife?
A very small watch screwdriver preferably a Flathead might be a good substitute for this.
Anything is if it's easy and retro! = )
Hi ! Are these replacement lens still available ? Can you please tell me where you bought them ?
+Christopher Adolphe - You can easily find them either eBay or Amazon.
Yes indeed. I'll try to open the Game Boy and see if this stuff can be clean off. If not then I'll consider buy a replacement from ebay. Thank you (^^
The capacitor is blown, it needs a replacement. When I got this at the flea market I pointed this out to the guy and no battery cover hence $5.
The capacitor is blown so even if I turned it up it still needs to be replaced.
+oldschoolnycgamer do they do free shipping
It needs a cap and speaker replacement, after that it should work fine.
I know this is an old video, but I want to ask, does the screen scratch easily? I'm debating on whether I should buy it for not.
+amcheung10 and is it glass or plastic
Almost always plastic(unless it was refurbished)--and yes. I highly, highly recommend using lens protectors!
Point well taken, thank you.
I like your tattoos!
Recently, I got the original Gameboy from 1989. Can this technique of taking the screen off work on the original gameboy?
The 80's Boss - I am not too sure about that but I know there are tutorials on that as well.
+The 80's Boss It's worth a shot but most old Gameboys specifically the original ones they just fall out.
+cutemimi25 What do you mean 'they just fall out'?
TheBongoMan , The adhesive gets old and it won't stick to the screen.
Wow 12 years ago
crapscats here thank a lot of help good luck with gameing
Thanks man!!!
Wheres the videos
Thanks
Instead of the sound my GBC screen shows no image
I’m 12 and I replaced the whole shell on a game boy sp all by myself and my gb colors screen is all scrached
It really isn't that hard to find those screen replacements on the net, I got mine via eBay.
Does this go for GBA?
Every gameboy
No problem sir. = )
thanks i've found and watched this video, i always wanted to know the difference between replacement battery cover and original case/shell, NOW i know the are way different!! WHAT A SHAME

+Amy Koerner - Glad it worked out ok Amy, it's not as hard as most make it out to be.
It was actually pretty simple. I was kinda scared to do it at first haha. I put that old school limited edition pikachu screen on my gameboy! ^_^

It's easier and safer to take a small pair of metal scissors, lift the corner and slide a small screwdriver under and slide across breaking the adhesive loose. Using a blade like this is just asking to cut yourself.
