  • Refurbished late model Yaesu FT101E - bought cheaply in October 2017 at a HIFI jumble sale (Swap meet if your in the USA..I speak American as well!)...owned by a CB/Freebander who had no technical skills at all. Amazed it survived it brush with a box of small nails that he had knocked into the open radio trying to fix an audio fault (so far I have fished 4 out). He didnt spot that the external speaker socket was dirty and had disconnected the internal speaker. Final tubes OK as well. One RX IF transistor died after a few hours..quickly located and replaced. Repainted case, front panel totally unmarked, looks nearly new

I love old school rigs, better than all the new stuff coming out, I’ve got hold of a FT902DM and another for spares.

The red VFO lamp on the front panel is
running off pin 14 from the power supply board.
rit light will come on if its pressed in.
make sure the vfo selector is really on int not tx ext (knob may be off).
I got a 101e here I restored completely and I also did C13 and C131 they are critical.
I'm a cber though so I guess I better go.
    ;)

With an old radio, if a transistor dies, I would immediately suspect a coupling capacitor as the killer. Transistors tend to be very long=lived, but CAPACITORS are a different matter.

been in this biz for over 55 years...and have seen a few transistor failures..they dont have infintite life !

@@telecastersteve True. In the early 70s, I worked as an audio service tech, and DID encounter bad transistors. But it was rare. Capacitors, especially electrolytics, tend to go bad, in time. What I meant was, I'd check the coupling cap, and maybe, replace it, as a matter of course. They ARE cheap.
