An accelerometer mounted on your ankle, hip or wrist should work for that without requiring a sensor that you step on and all the problems from mounting it Edit: this answer gives you a personal timer. If you want a race track with build in timer I'd use a break beam sensor (a laser aimed at a receiver, detects when something Interrupts the beam.) Use NRF24L01 wireless modules to link both stations together or build the project directly on ESP8266 wifi modules. They be programmed with the Arduino IDE and don't need an additional arduino.
