I stayed in a West Wing King back in 2005 when they were brand new. It was considered a premium room back then. Not much has changed except the LCD TV replaced the giant tube CRT we had back then. I do remember the mirror in the bathroom having a small TV embedded in it. That was super modern for 2005, but everything else looks the same. Those West Wing King rooms are small because they are the remnants of the old Marina Hotel that MGM purchased. Instead of tearing it down they added onto it to complete the property. Those rooms have gone 17 years without a major overhaul, and they still look decent. Perfect room to sleep and shower and get back into the action.
I stayed at the MGM Grand last month. I rented three standard strip view rooms for four nights (all were 2 queens and the price was a little over $3k total) All 3 rooms were dirty, had worn furnishings, frayed carpets, chipped furniture, and one even had blue gum on the ceiling. On our second night, the water was off to all three rooms from 11pm to about 4am. The clerk said it was due to a waterpipe break. She also said she would credit the resort fee for that night, for all three rooms, which of course she did not. On our last day, I asked if I could get just one of the rooms set up for a late checkout. They said they could do it, but they would charge $50 for it....I asked if they could comp it due to the amount I had spent on the rooms, as well as the Copperfield show tickets (over $1200 for 8 of us), and meals we had there (over $1500). - They said nope - no exceptions to the fee (which everyone knows is not the truth, especially if you have enough action in your gamble.) The end result is, I will never pay for another room at MGM Grand. (I only selected it because of the pool, due to our grandsons coming with their mom and dad) The only positive things I can say for the property, is that they do upgrade you to the Pearl card if you are active military or prior service. Just show your DD214 or your active/reserve ID card at the players reward desk. The other positive is their pool...It is a good family-friendly area with a lazy river. I did contact their customer service department twice, and of course I have received no reply from them about the issues we had. Since returning from that trip, I have already received offers of 4 nights comped, $175 in freeplay and $100 in resort credit. (The same offer was made for the Bellagio) - Both offers were based on my action from that visit last month. I would rather pay for a room at a property that has good customer service, rather than use a comp at a property that is not going to give an enjoyable visit. I would give a revisit to the Bellagio using the offer though, so I am not anti-MGM, just anti MGM Grand. A property that has over 6,500 rooms is bound to have problems daily, but by the same reasoning, they should have figured out a plan to handle and respond to these daily SNAFU's by now.
These rooms are from the orignal Marina Hotel that was on the property before the MGM Grand was built. They just worked the old hotel into the new construction.

I felt claustrophobic just watching you in there! There is a lot to like about MGM Grand, but the property is just too big for my taste. If attending a concert on site or taking the family to enjoy their pool complex, it’s a good choice. If I was booking a stay at this end of the Strip, I’d go with NoMad or Park MGM. Looking forward to your restaurant, bar and entertainment experiences video for MGM Grand!
That's an original Marina Hotel room. I've never stayed there, only in the Grand Tower, but you can definitely tell those older resorts definitely had small rooms

I thought this was a windowless room but then I noticed the one behind the bed which I thought was a light. Windowless hotel rooms are a hard pass for me, it's like sleeping in a janitor's closet.
I remember being in a double room in the west tower when it was the Marina Hotel & Casino back in 1988. It was the first and only time I had seen a bathroom as large as the bedroom. There was no closet for the toilet. It was just sitting there away from the shower and sink. There was a chest of drawers on the wall where that comfy chair is now and a tv sat on it facing the beds. The closet was open around from bathroom sink. Thanks for booking and showing the room. If MGM can modernize an old room to this nobody else should have an excuse with their rooms.
Think of it this way, the room promotes you to get out and explore the town as much as possible. Seriously though, you'd actually be better off staying at Excalibur! Another point goes to Aria's Sky Suites!! You know I love it 😎
While this room is very average in any way imaginable, Excalibur has some major flaws that cannot be understated. On the other side of the spectrum Aria Sky suites are amazing indeed but cost roughly 3 to 4 times the price of this room, so they are not really comparable. Of course, considering that MGM Grand has a lot of higher tier rooms available at any time, definitely try the 20 dollar trick to get a reasonably likely significant upgrade while paying the low price of the King West Suite price.

I stayed in the West Wing many years ago. It was one of my favorite rooms, so cozy. I loved it. Only downfall was it was a further walk to everything (except the strip).
I stayed in this room in may and never have I ever imagined exists a room that doesn’t have an enclosed bathroom. And having the bathroom literally right next to the front door. I could be coming out of the shower while housekeeping comes in. And the smells if someone goes number 2. All this and it’s on the Vegas strip.
As noted below, the West Wing of MGM Grand was the old Marina Hotel, which sat on the Strip just west of the former Tropicana Golf Course. The Marina and the golf course were purchased by Kerkorian's company which was in the process of tearing out the golf course when we first visited the Trop in 1991. They decided to incorporate the old Marina into the new MGM Grand, which is why those rooms are so much more cramped than even the basic MGM room in the rest of the property. Frankly, that room looked like a cruise ship cabin to me, only without the veranda.
I stayed their once on the fourth floor and there is an elevator half way down the hall. Takes a lot of the walking out of going to and from your room.
The room looks in my opinion kinda fine. And the bathroom is a bit unusual but in a cool way. The only thing that bothers me based on also preview videos I've seen about this room is how tiny that window is.
I think between the poor bed & the part you didn't even mention about it not having any windows for a strip or mountain view at all (just mirrors everywhere and poor lightning) these rooms look like a D or F for me. Should be some of the cheapest rooms in Vegas.
You must try Joel Robuchon/L'atelier while you are at MGM. I think it's better than Le Cirque - although it seems much better than I remembered from your latest.
Man, you found the worst room in Vegas! I spent 2 minutes in that West Wing once, and then right back to lobby to switch towers. Lack of windows and light was my main gripe. Was like a cave. The base rooms in the main tower are much larger. Plus wall to wall windows for great views, and the bed is in the middle.
Great review and thank you for reviewing the entry-level room. I priced a weekday in late July and before the resort fee this West Wing King room was $169. For this very same weekday, the MGM owned properties of New York New York was $42 , and Luxor was $38. And if you wanted a room on mid strip , Park MGM was $91. I know Coolist says that this is a good price if you want to be in the iconic MGM Grand, I don’t disagree. I just really question the value here, for a half to a quarter of the price of MGM Grand, you can get a room at a decent strip hotel, and I would argue that the entry-level rooms in New York New York, Luxor and Park MGM are better. I totally love this review and I am just trying to throw a little perspective on that you are paying a big premium to be in the MGM Grand, that’s all. For some people that might be well worth it!
There is nothing iconic about it,its an overpriced rip off as is the organisation that run it. The casino particulary at weekends is rife with drugs and prostitution, and the whole place is a noisy overhyped ghetto. My biggest issue with MGM grand is it was too grand. It is too large of a property. I will not stay there again mainly for that reason. It seems like just to get to the strip it was a 30-minute walk from your hotel room. The casino floor is way too big and confusing.
Has anyone already mentioned that the “mini mirror” area in the large bath mirror was probably a slot for a small TV screen at one time…..Bellagio has them but obviously it was not an option in MGM’s basic room plan….Thanks for the info!
love you to leave a comment about the air conditioning at your venues in las vegas, recently visited the sahara las vegas and air conditioning was horrid, blew right over the bed making it uncomfortable to sleep, felt more like a draught, pease let us know your views, thanks
Yeah, that room. No thanks. Modern or not, I would pass that one by. And window behind the headboard, yikes. No real light coming in. I think MGM hotel is okay. Not a big fan however. But that excuse fir a room. Coolist, as always a good video. You help many discover so much. Thank you
We used points from one of the MGM slots apps for a free night at the MGM Grand for our last night in Vegas back in March. Our other choice for about the same amount of points was the right to book the Bellagio for $129. Quick summary:. We should have paid the $129! The room was borderline creepy, but not half as creepy as the corridor to get to it. The room in the video was at least twice as bright as the one we were in. The single window above the headboard offered a view of an alley containing dumpsters and large rolling laundry hampers. We had stayed in nice places the rest of the week, so really it was fine for our needs - but next time, I'll spend the $129 for the Bellagio!
He never said that the reason it's smaller (he did say older) than the rest of the rooms is because it's a recycled hotel (Marina) incorporated into the MGM Grand building.

Nothing special, but it'll get the job done. I get that some people will dump on rooms like that but those are great for trips with your buddies. There are different Vegas trips. If I'm coming out there with my wife, I'm not staying in that room. We'll get something a little bigger and more luxurious. But if I'm coming out there for a couple days with the boys, we aren't spending time in the rooms anyway. We're out at bars and on the tables for 18 hours a day. The room is only there to crash in for a few hours before going out and doing it again. For that Vegas trip, these rooms are perfect.

I'm an Ambassador Level w Marriott. One I really like is the Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. It was just completely renovated/reopened from the hurricane 2 years ago. Rooms are brand new, new Ritz decor with a beach theme. They have a private beach, crystal clear water, very nice pools, and plenty of free activities like snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaks, etc. And the best thing about the USVI - no passport needed, just need ID. I've been to this hotel twice and hope to return.

James Lucas from San Diego. I had a connecting flight from Vegas to Miami so I went to the cosmo. How do you handle the smell of 🚬? Any how you said something that miami doesn't have good steakhouses and that it's more about the astetics, no no no. Papis steak house is the best restraint I ever walked into. Second being sugar. I went on yelp and gave a 5 star review . I had the fiz drinks like you and a steak with all the trimmings with the Jewish bread. With that being said we need you back in miami and you should dine at Papis, like masvdal and covington. If you go back to miami consider SLS south beach or The 1 hotel or the Loews. I think the 1 hotel blows the door off the miami beach edition. Quite possibly Cheers buddy and go Gypsy King. Furry is the Goat.

The MGM grand sneakily has some of the worst rooms on the Vegas strip. Imagine paying over $100 for this? Bally’s, entry level for Caesar’s properties blows this place away. Twice as big and nicer, wayyy cheaper. I know you don’t love the Park, but ParkMGM blows this place away.
Most of the time, the "standard" room is not much more expensive. At least they have Windows. Park MGM across the street is a much better option, might even be cheaper than the West Wing room.
Never again. Stayed there once about 5 years ago and it’s was a nightmare. The room is ok but the west wing is like a dungeon. Insane dark walkway that is miles away from everything else in the property. Undesirables everywhere. This property is a disaster now.

James - would LOVE a video from you, Titanium Marriott Superstar - on what your thoughts / opinions are on the BEST resorts to use 50,000 points, per night, for a fun vacation in North America. We have 5, 50K point certificates with the new Marriott Bonvoy credit card promo going on right now and would LOVE your expertise on where YOU would blow 250,000 points over 5 nights 😊
@@larrybenton777 Thank you! I have stayed at the Ritz in ST.Thomas before and it was a nice experience - sadly - the points required per night exceed my allocated 50,000 point per night certificates. I TRULY appreciate your feedback - that was kind of you to take the time to reply.
@@AngieRTaylor No problem! I noticed Marriott has another resort in St Croix. Its offering me 5 nights for inky 150,000 points. Never been but the pictures look nice.
At Mgm if you stay 4 nights they upgrade your room and move you closer to the elevator.
I hope you make it to Joel Robuchon’s!
😉
Quite possibly
Cheers buddy and go Gypsy King. Furry is the Goat.
Hey man dig your content, if you’re still in the throes of your trip make sure and grab an Uber over to herbs and Rye (its close) for a couple cocktails
It’s a low-key local spot that does mixology right and it’s on my list to visit every time I’m out there for the bar & night club convention.
I Couldn’t do the small window, not worth the cheap price to me
How much does the room cost
I’d move rooms!
Sooooo how much was the room??
i stayed in a west wing room back in 2019 it was not nice for me only great staff at mgm was the pool with the lazy river a friend of me stayed on same date like my at a king room and whe meet up somewhere in the middle whe had each a 20 minute walk for ariving at metup point these hotel casino is to big for me the ideal size for me woud be Mirage,Bellagio...
ive been here 7 years ago and thank GOD my financial situation has improved cause this room sucked lol
“Penitentiary style sink” 😂
Better than Harrah’s entry room?
Nope!
Go to lounge at MGM?
“Prison vibes” hahahaha
The people that run it should be in prison, but there are enough morons to supply them with an endless supply of cash
it feels like a prison room with that tiny window
Decent flop room with an above average location.
all the mirrors are for you to look at yourself and say " Why the F did I pick this room?" lol
That’s a no for me 😂 but like you said if you want to crash and be out it’s fine.
Come on James, finish at least one video with a ‘goodbye’ / ‘thanks’ / ‘the end’… 😁 (or did I miss they video about no outros)
Loving the content though…😎
Id only stay in this room if it was crazy cheap AND I was by myself, that prison bathroom is a hard pass
2nd
MGM or money grabbing mob as they should be known are for suckers and first time visitors to vegas.
MGM grand hotel itself is dated and over rated and anyone who knows anything about vegas would no longer put mgm resort propertys on the shortlist.
Those who dont mind extortionate resort fees parking charges and the tightest slots on the strip,be my guest
Sorry to say, but this room just looks dreadful. Please get yourself an upgrade. As I age I realize more and more that I don't have as much time to waste on pointless suffering.
I love it "prison vibes".
That is sooooo tiny.
Phone 📞 if you get inspired 😂
Awful
Yeah what horrible lighting
I went there 9/12/2001 whole town was empty with new wife, they gave me spa suite for free upgrade. I had her barking at the Headboard. She was hot, she ran off with some white guy in 2007. Fun times though...Now i get to spend money on myself, go to HongKong Tijuana. Buy anything i want without a female nagging.
Woof woof!
