  • Goddess Varahi is a form of Goddess Parvati and was supposedly created from the boar avatar of Lord Vishnu. Hence, she is one of his 3 Shakti energies. The other 2 are Vaishnavi and Narasimhi. Varahi symbolizes the energy of Yama, the God of Death. She is also one of the Sapta Matrikas (excluding Durga) and the Ashta Matrikas (including Durga/Chandika).
Some of the Hindu deities were tribal gods and goddesses once upon a time. They were later embraced by Hinduism and became major deities in the Hindu pantheon. One of these is Goddess Varahi. Among tribes that have a fierce nature, the worship of female counterparts used to be fairly common. They also offered blood sacrifices to them. It has been speculated that Vishnu’s Varaha and Narasimha avatars have a tribal connection.
Varahi, along with the other Sapta Matrikas, helped Goddess Durga during her battle against the demons, Shumbha and Nishumbha. So she has the attributes of a warrior. She is boar-faced with a dark hue, evoking storm clouds. On her head is a Karanda-Makuta (casket-like crown), and she wears coral jewelry. She sits on a Peetam under a Kalpaka tree and wields the Hala and Sakti. Her left leg rests on a small stool. On her legs are anklets. The Vishnudharmottara says that she has a big belly. The same source adds that she has 6 hands. Four of them carry things like the Danda, Khadga, Khetaka, and Pasa. Her remaining hands display the Abhaya and Varada mudras. The emblem on her banner is the elephant, which is also her mount.
As one of the Sapta Matrikas, she represents the controlled energy of courage and fearlessness when such virtues spin out of control, allowing greed, lust, and envy to prevail. She reminds us to take up issues boldly and avoid the traps of arrogance and greed. Those who worship her and meditate on her will realize that these traits are not part of our basic nature.
According to the Devi Mahatmya, Goddess Durga created the Sapta Matrikas to destroy the demon Raktabija. As per the Markandeya Purana, Varahi is quick to grant boons to her ardent devotees. The Matsya Purana has a different take and says that Lord Shiva created the Sapta Matrikas to kill the demon Andhakasura.
The Varahi Moola Mantra can be chanted 3 or 21 or 108 times every day. People offer pomegranate fruits and lemon rice as naivedya. Do this for 48 days if you want to get the blessings of Varahi.
