We have 13 horses and last night was absolutely unreal. The wind has been the worst. We just thought we were ready. I don’t know if we could have ever been prepared. I actually slept in the rider’s lounge so I could check on them often. Praise God we made it through ok! We live in North Mississippi.
We good!! I put my rabbits, quail, and 15 , 2 month old Bielefelder roosters I’m raising for breeders, and my plants in my hoop house that had my winter salad growing in it. I have oil radiator heater in there. Everyone in cages but the Bielefelders. Everyone is fine, the low was only 30 in hoop house!! We did have causality’s…. The roosters ate all my salad!!! That’s alright though everyone made it so far. The hen house with my laying flock, 😂hen house was already winter ready! Our low here in west Texas so far was “4” felt like -18! Wind brutal, and we are use to high winds here, but the gusts were savage! No rain , ice, or snow here… no moisture , drought continues!
The wind blew super wild here in southern KY last night. With the snow flying too it was a white out for about a couple hours. Not much accumulation(3"), but it is bitterly cold here now. About 13K are without power in my area at the moment. I live close to the fire dept so my power usually stays on. Or if it does go out its only for a short time because of the FD emergency services. Hope everyone got their animals secured too! Stay warm and safe folks...I'm fixing 2 make a big pot of Chili and just hanging out with my fur babies inside today! I'm born and raised in Ohio, so this weather is just old hat to me. But I have enjoyed not dealing with it since I moved down south. So hopefully this won't become a reoccurring thing and all this cold weather will stay up north!

Well I’m here in Northern Indiana and let me tell you it is bad. 50 mph winds, below freezing temperatures with wind chill. It’s awful. My daughter’s birthday is the 24th and I was planning on driving 60 miles south of me to spend the day and Christmas with her. It may not happen 😢😢 Under travel advisories for the next two days. Jason love to watch y'all. Just wanted to let ya know if ya ever have cold weather like that again. Use the straw or hay then cover with plastic or even tarps. Cause when the hay or straw get wet they freeze so it makes the plants under them freeze. But you need to keep the platic off the plants. We live in ashland ky and have to deal with crazy weather all the time. God bless.

Today in Helena, MT will be our 1st day back above negative temps!! The coldest we got was -32 with a feel of -51! We have 5 Nigerian Dwarf Goats and their coats are so thick and amazing!! Talk about incredible animals!! They have a dry, out of the wind, shelter and they are doing just fine! Love how God made animals to be so resilient! Can't wait to hear how it went for you all, that is definitely cold for your neck of the woods!

You guys are awesome! Not sure if you know but straw is best to use for warmth and bedding because hay, holds moisture and mold, so it can actually make the animals colder. I know you're doing best you can with what you've got but thought I'd share the info. Love this famy and this channel

I brought my two outside cats into the back room where I store wood. Cardboard box fluffed with old towels inside of it. Heated water bowl. Small electric heater and heat lamp. Extra food cat box and some cat toys. They were shivering and now they are snug as a bug in a rug. I am thankful me and all my critters are safe and the wood stove is keeping the house toasty.

It might hit freezing for a couple days but nothing like what y’all will have, so y’all be safe… Peaches made me laugh at the way she was making a bed.. make sure all your vehicles have some kind of Antifreeze in the radiator and ya should be good…. Since Mary Carl keeps them in her bedroom in cages, I would say they will be fine. In one of their videos Jason showed they have a backup system if their electric goes out.

Putting hay on the garden is the best idea! You are going to preserve lots of food for your family!! It’s not like your going to leave the hay to decompose forever! You said you would try to pick it up asap .. it won’t do much damage and be more helpful than detrimental!!! Y’all keep up the good work!! Good luck!
Great job getting everyone/everything tucked in. I was thinking about the hay for covering the gardens. I know you are going to be building a barn with pastures/turnouts soon. Not sure if you have extra cleared land or not but if you have 5-10 spare acres or some land you could clear, planting a hay field might benefit you. You would get clean hay that you know what it was treated with, fresher feed hay for your babies and easy access. If your hay field was big enough to give you 5 round bales a cutting and you make 2 cuttings that is 10 bales you need not buy plus know what they contain chemical wise. In a good year you might get 3 cuttings. I also use hay around my potato plants so if weather behaves itself you still have clean hay for that and feeding.
All that plastic on the windows reminds me of my grandparents house when I was a kid in th 70's. Every November 1st when they put snow tires on their cars. My grandfather had his local handyman come over and put the heavy duty plastic "screens" on the house. And heaven forbid it gets warm before april 1st. Because that's when the snow tires had to be off. And so the plastic 'screens" would come off. Oh the memories. Great job Jason.

Straw is very hard to get in the South. Much more available in the Midwest.

I brought my two outside cats into the back room where I store wood. Cardboard box fluffed with old towels inside of it. Heated water bowl. Small electric heater and heat lamp. Extra food cat box and some cat toys. They were shivering and now they are snug as a bug in a rug. I am thankful me and all my critters are safe and the wood stove is keeping the house toasty.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Cog Squad!! I live in Phoenix Arizona and we won’t have temperatures like most of the country. It might hit freezing for a couple days but nothing like what y’all will have, so y’all be safe… Peaches made me laugh at the way she was making a bed.. make sure all your vehicles have some kind of Antifreeze in the radiator and ya should be good…. Putting hay on the garden is the best idea! You are going to preserve lots of food for your family!! It’s not like your going to leave the hay to decompose forever! You said you would try to pick it up asap .. it won’t do much damage and be more helpful than detrimental!!!

I was thinking about the hay for covering the gardens. I know you are going to be building a barn with pastures/turnouts soon. Not sure if you have extra cleared land or not but if you have 5-10 spare acres or some land you could clear, planting a hay field might benefit you. You would get clean hay that you know what it was treated with, fresher feed hay for your babies and easy access. If your hay field was big enough to give you 5 round bales a cutting and you make 2 cuttings that is 10 bales you need not buy plus know what they contain chemical wise. In a good year you might get 3 cuttings. I also use hay around my potato plants so if weather behaves itself you still have clean hay for that and feeding.
Does the price of the equipment required justify the the quantity of the feed?

All that plastic on the windows reminds me of my grandparents house when I was a kid in th 70's. Every November 1st when they put snow tires on their cars. My grandfather had his local handyman come over and put the heavy duty plastic "screens" on the house. And heaven forbid it gets warm before april 1st. Because that's when the snow tires had to be off. And so the plastic 'screens" would come off. Oh the memories. Great job Jason.
