  • Classic Game Room reviews KUNG FU for Nintendo Entertainment System from 1985 based on the 1984 arcade machine, Kung Fu Master from Irem. This 2D side scrolling beat em up predates many games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage by several years and clearly influenced many games in the genre, as it was influenced by martial arts films from the previous two decades like Bruce Lee's "The Game of Death". Players take up the fight of Thomas who is kicking ass to save his girlfriend, Sylvia from the evil Mr. X (Speed Racer's brother perhaps?). This CGR review of Kung Fu on NES has gameplay during the Kung Fu video review showing Nintendo Kung Fu game play played on Nintend Entertainment System.

This game will always have a special place in my heart. Getting a NES for Christmas in 91, I got this game with SMB/DH, Mach Rider and Excitebike. This was the most enjoyable given my old man was a karate sensei and we would play this together. I still remember my dad and I being really competitive with it, even coming home from a day at the lake to dad playing it and bragging about getting to the 4th level.
Within 10 minutes, I had sat down and proceeded to clock a game for the first time as a 6year old to see the defeat in my dad's eyes and hear him say "smart ass" and my grandfather telling him to keep practicing.
As my dad now deals with dementia and my granfather gone, I remember this day so clearly 30 years on and igniting my competitive nature, love for the nes and bonding with the 2 greatest role models i have.

This is a fun game! People can say they don't like it now, but even when you only started playing games in the 90s, like me, you grow to really appreciate both the simplicity of visuals and the challenging gameplay. A time when games were more about challenge and curiosity than merely beating it. There is a degree of satisfaction with beating older games that does not exist so much for newer games. However, I will say this game is okay to me now. You can just play it casually, and still beat it.

Game was so dumb when released, and when my friends and i had nothing to do on a Sunday morning sleepover, we couldnt stop playing it till the evening! So addicting!! I think we were determined to beat it! Hello 1991 childhood...

I actually played the Kung Fu arcade machine back in the days. It was on holiday in Italy in a hotel lobby.
Besides money the machine also took special coins they sold for the telephones, which made made playing the game a lot cheaper. :-)

@nintendoboy17 And with good reason. This game was released in Japan as "Spartan X," which was an alternate title for the film you're talking about. If you take a look at the arcade game, you'll see that Thomas looks a lot more Jackie Chan-esque than he does in the NES version.

I remember playing this on the arcades when I was a kid. Of course it had better graphics and music, but it also IIRC, was more difficult. I never managed to finish it, perhaps I reached third level, not sure any more. I do remember some extra enemies, there was pottery dropped from the ceiling which either exploded or had snakes inside, iirc. Tough game.
    Good review.

Actually, this game is not a button basher at all. There is a lot more strategy and quick reflexes required for this early beat 'em up than in later games in the genre like Double Dragon and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. THOSE were button bashers, this one has aged much better, with its super responsive controls and clearly defined graphics.

I remember this game and in retrospect I think we all give it more credit then it deserves. I do think it gets points for style cause any game with "voice-like" sound effects in that era wad impressive and he makes a pretty convincing "hi-ya!" sound. Lol. But even then the gameplay was repetitive and boring.

@Airking11 Well you gotta remember that back then, technology was very different. VERY different, and that technology back then, even though looks really limited today, was highly advance than it was 10 years before it. The reason why you can't envision it is because today's technology is so far advance but you gotta remember that there were not cell phones, no internet, and video game systems only played video games. Today's society is overwhelmed with technology while it was simpler back then

@fredlburrows Well, of course I cannot judge the game with a perspective full of nostalgia for this game since I was not alive at the time it was released. All I can do is judge the game on its fun factor and how it holds up today. I enjoy tons of NES games that I think are still fun and hold up well. Kung Fu is not one of these games. Yes, at the time it may have been groundbreaking, but today the gameplay comes as way too basic and frankily its quite boring.
